Not Another NBN Topic

Hi all

Long story short, i'm with Telstra ultimate, paying $80/month with good speed and 500gig allowance. Now they're switching my cable off in a week and i have to choose an NBN plan.
Every plans out there seems to be slower and cost more than what im paying now, how the F**K does that work? What's wrong with this government?

Then i found Aussie Broadband (thanks Ozbargain crew), i rang up just to find that they're not available in my area, i mean WTF????

I'm left with a long list of rubbish providers (below), can someone help and provide some feedback if you're using one of the providers list here?

Thank you

    First world problem.
Go out a get a life.

  • DODO NBN, had them for a year with no problem. Sadly moved and had to downgrade to an ADSL2+

  • +1

    Wow - perspective here.

Boohoo you pay $80 for 500Gb and up to 100Mbps. Now you need to pay more or get less quota So sad.

Then you rant on about crappy providers and I see Amnet and iiNet in there (in your words really WTF?)

Try living in Oakford, where I pay $60 + $40 landline (which I don't even want but hey, ADSL), get only 6Mbps maximum because I'm on a RIM/Pair Gain (so can't get naked DSL either), and 150Mbps on/150Mbps off peak (which is only 6 hours a night).

At least my Netflix/XBox Live downloads are in freezone, but other than:

Tone it down mate, you really have nothing to complain about.

As for ISP - Amnet or if you want free Netflix iiNet.

Exactly, the guy is lucky as hell to be even able to get NBN. Much of the country would kill it for it

    • -2

Thanks for the advises, i'll consider moving to Oakford when i plan my retirement.

  • +1

Why not just be happy that you have an option to have the NBN :(

  • Aussie broadband +1

I'm with them on the old WiMAX network and they don't miss a beat.. great thing about them you can call them and get an aussie on the phone who can understand.

    • I hear you and alot of you here recommended them but they're not allow to sell NBN in my area.

  • -2

wow so many rude people here jealous of us who has NBN lol ahaha.

  • +2

People with NBN are bastards….. I've never wanted to be a bastard so much

  • NBN? I'd kill for 8Mbps.

    • same here adsl would be luxury what i got at the moment 3g mobile data

  • +2

Wow dude be grateful that you can get the NBN…. There are many people out there (including me) that dreams to get the NBN as many people are stuck with adsl…

    • -2

      No
you guys dont' get it, NBN is not that great as what the government trying to make it sounds to be.

      • +2

wtf my internet speed is 6mbps atm… with nbn u can get up to 100mbps… tell me whats so not that great?

      • +1

NBN is great for those who have it. Especially when you have Fiber to the Premise.

It is exceedingly better than those stuck with ADSL and sync less than 10mbps. And reliability - the net doesn't stop working for no apparent reason.. Unlike ADSL where it desyncs whenever it rains, when the phone rings, when your dog sneezes, etc

I have 25meg down and 5 Meg up and I'm seriously loving it. Yes, it costs more than ADSL does but that's because NBN is still on its growth phase. Fast internet is a privilege not a right.

Is Telstra telling you the truth? Do you really need to switch right now? When was the NBN installed in your area?

I got the same spiel from them as you did. "You need to sign up to the NBN or you'll be disconnected in a month!" Except I knew that wasn't true.

When the NBN comes to your area you have 18 months to switch over. Type in your address at http://www.mynbn.info/ and check if they're telling you the truth (look at the disconnection date).

I also have the same problem you do with NBN prices. Telstra wants me to switch to the NBN. I'll get to keep what I currently get, for only an extra $33 a month.

  • -2

Why do people kept saying that we're lucking to have NBN ……….

Don't blame us, blame your awesome government.

    • Because almost no one in the whole of Australia has anything better than ADSL2. There are many people city in capital cities with 2-3Mbit connections that are incredibly flaky and unreliable. For them 100MBit NBN would be a monumental upgrade, for almost no difference in cost.

  • hey mate, i've been with Activ8me for 2 years now, $70 for 100/40Mbps with 100GB.
just renewed my contract for same price and speed but with $250GB.

they have an offer atm, http://www.activ8me.net.au/special-offer but that's on a slow speed, just have to pay the extra $ for faster speed.
the actual service itself is fine but telephone customer service can be frustrating but you would only call them maybe once a year…if at all.

  • ALSO BEAWARE that
most smaller ISPs will go down the drain because none of them can comply with the monstrous amount of profit destroying work entailed in meeting the governments requirements for STORING METADATA.
So, cross all the less than billion dollar ISP companies off your list.

    • Sounds like you made that up. They only just implemented metadata.

Not sure what the Telstra Ultimate plan is, but I was on the Telstra cable Medium plan with speed boost (1,000gb 100Mbps), and they switched me over to NBN a coule months ago. I was a little peeved at first, because as someone else mentioned above, I thought there was no requirement to changeover for at last a year. But they spoke to my wife unfortunately who just agreed, and I never had time to get back in touch.
Anyway, when we were hooked up there was no change to our existing plan (data or speed) and we pay the same monthly bill as under cable. Noticed no degradation in speed or service either. I'm surprised your existing plan doesnt' just 'port' over.

If you do happen to stick with Telstra, be aware that they tried to charge us about $180 for the install and $200 for their useless modem/router. I cried foul to them and they reversed most of the charges.
