Not Another NBN Topic

Hi all

Long story short, i'm with Telstra ultimate, paying $80/month with good speed and 500gig allowance. Now they're switching my cable off in a week and i have to choose an NBN plan.
Every plans out there seems to be slower and cost more than what im paying now, how the F**K does that work? What's wrong with this government?

Then i found Aussie Broadband (thanks Ozbargain crew), i rang up just to find that they're not available in my area, i mean WTF????

I'm left with a long list of rubbish providers (below), can someone help and provide some feedback if you're using one of the providers list here?

Thank you

isn't 100mbps fast enough for you?

TPG 12/1 NBN Customer here and yes id recommend TPG 6 months now with then no slow downs except when there maintenance which gets listed on there website

      • +8

I downloaded over 20 gb of torrents yesterday.

        • +5

@tymatk: ive downloaded terrabytes in the last 6 months ive been on tpg with no warning at all.

I download games movies and tv shows.

        • @holden93:
Sounds good, i'll look into TPG now :).

        • @tymatk: Yep they have been great im always downloading the latest tv shows and movies currently waiting for the next episode of the flash :) just downloaded limitless latest ep.

          @tymatk:

Please realise that ISP's don't send letters… the copyright holders do.

Even if you ran your own ISP, you can't stop copyright holders sending letters to you…

        • +4

@tymatk: Don't blame the field if ya don't know how to play the game. You gotta wear the armor of VPN before playing with torrents.

        • @tymatk:

Unless you downloaded illegal contents or intellectual property protected contents. One of my friends got a letter from TPG mentioned that.

        • +1

          @samfisher5986: It's simple don't use public trackers

        • @Quotationz:

Private trackers are not particularly safe. You are just safer then public.

        • @anonymous01: Any good suggestions?

        • @Quotationz: Sorry, but how to do that?

        • @Gaggy: There are plenty of good ones which are cheap, even free for 1 year if you search this site. I myself don't use VPN. I prefer file sharing sites for a cost of $10 per month or so. Uploaded and Rapidgator are some of the good ones if you are interested.

        • +2

@Gaggy: Use private torrent websites. Alot are invite only or you have to pay to join. Iptorrents.com is one of the better ones

        • @anonymous01: Thanks.

  • +9

Every plans out there seems to be slower and cost more than what im paying now, how the F**K does that work?

And how did it happen that Exetel offers 500GB for $79 per month at 100/40 and you don't know about it? Maybe you should have done a better research yourself instead of posting a pretty long list of ISPs here?

    • +3

      Effort = reward.. :-)

    • This is why you're Bright Aussie and i'm not.

I heard Exetel customer service is crap.

      • -2
        1. I had no idea that you were a foreigner. If you have a hang-up with that then that is your problem.

        2. You will find justifiable and non so complaints about every ISP and every business. Sometimes you need to read forums with a little bit of discretion.
For every unhappy customer that ISP has it may have a 1000 happy ones that you will not hear from.
We have been with Exetel for a very long time and have nothing to complain about.
Being a bit comp savvy helps with the budget providers. Good luck with your search.

        • +6

        Exetel customer service is crap

i was with them then switched to TPG.

        Heaps better service.

        • I've been with exetel for over 3 years and they seem very helpful to me. They've even helped me configure routers that aren't in their hardware supported list. Support line always open and you can use email support as well if you want everything in writing.

If you're finding you're getting bad support you should probably start conversations with asking their name and badge ID and being polite and respectful. If you feel like they can't/won't help you, hang up and get someone else who can. Although I've never had to hang up on exetel.

        • @voolish: Hang up and wait another 30-60 mins to be assisted? Their waiting times are atrocious..

        • @voolish:

You must have missed or not been part of the period where they made changes to peak and off peak times, price increases
while people were still in contract.

And other more issues which you can search on whirlpool.

          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1396900

Leaving Exetel was one of the best things I ever did.

        • @voolish:

I remember when extel kicked people off plans for maxing out their quotas or downloading more than 120gb on their unlimited plans. Also if you used tech support too much they gave you the boot.

Unless you're a light user who wont use tech support much exetel is not a good isp to be with as they are unpredictable. They only eant to keep the most profitable customers.

        • @cristobaljames: I've only ever had to wait 10-15 minutes, you're right though that is long.

        • @tyler.durden: My plan changed to $109 and I stayed with them because I didn't want to sign up for another contract before I move which is soon. I'm not arguing their broadband price is good because it isn't I just said their support has helped me. I would sign up for their NBN though.

They footed half the bill to get my internal wiring fixed by a telstra tech before which was good.

I just want to add my ex who is still on contract hasn't had her plan change, she is still on $70 a month for 500GB.

        • @voolish:

Haha, and you consider that a good thing?

I am with Telstra now, and the support is much better
you don't need to wait that long.

With exetel, I remember they got this recording

          ==

also you plan is cost too much.

          You should try telstra cable.

    • +2

Belong, which is wholly run by Telstra, only costs $85/month for 500GB at 100/40 or $95/month for 1TB.

    • +3

The best way to get the information you want on the internet is to post some incorrect information / lack of information, and wait for someone to correct you / give you what you want, which you just did for OP ;)

  • +4

I'm left with a long list of rubbish providers (below)

I see iinet in that list, second best ISP in the country…

    • +4

Also belong which is Telstra. Also Telstra itself is on that list.

    • Thanks will call up

    • +4

      *used to be.

Now that TPG owns it, I really don't think it is or will continue to be any good. Just like internode went downhill so fast

  • +2

And what does Telstra want to charge you for an NBN connection?
I thought your plan would just transition across to them!

    • They want the same money for less Gigabyte and slower than what i'm on atm which is Ultimate, hence why i'm not happy.

      • You've called them to cancel and been told that, or just jumped on the website to see their advertised offers?

        • I rang.

Try to be the best and loyalest customer (i have been with them for over 10 years) …. but got put through to Philippine and this person have no understanding about loyal customer, long term customer. All she wants was to put me through a new plan.

        • @tymatk:
Ask to be put through to retention.

        • +3

@scubacoles: Yep.. If you tell them you want to cancel, they should put you straight through to a local call centre (funnily enough) and that person will have more authority to offer you a better deal, etc.

It happened when I cancelled my Telstra account, they offered this and that.. however they were never going to be able to keep me as iiNet (TransACT) is the only one with VDSL2 in ACT, which is like 20x faster than what ADSL could offer me.

        • +1

          @tymatk:
go in store and see what they offer.

  • I'm with MyNetFone and they're fine. Never have any dropouts or anything - but this is for ADSL2+

    • +5

Praise be Kevin Rudd. Otherwise I'd likely be lucky to get more than 5mb here on Adsl2, where as im sitting at a comfortable 96mb up 36 mb down, for the same price I was paying for adsl2 at my old address.

    • +4

It it wasn't for Rudd and Conroy, the NBN would never have started and we'd still be under the mercy of Telstra who has zero incentive to give users outside cherry picked areas better speeds.

    • -5

To the 9 idiots that negged this comment - it is a verifiable fact that Rudd introduced NBN and legislated the cut off of other options. Look it up morons.

      • +1

Yeah, because so much of those "other options" occurred during the last 10 years.

Unless you happen to be lucky enough to live in one of the few areas that got cherry picked for Cable, the best you could ever get is shitt ads2l, which depends so much on your line quality and distance from exchange

  • +1

When I was getting NBN I rang Telstra to cancel the landline. Finished up getting a discounted bundle from them, including a 25/5 NBN service. Bundle included Foxtel and landline calls. Usually the speed clocks 24 Mbps over my home wifi, plus all my Foxtel "Anytime" downloads aren't metered against my allowance. (200GB). I'm happy with it.

    • How much do you pay per month mind if i ask?

      • +1

I have the full Foxtel Platinum plan and it's $200 per month. I was previously paying Foxtel $134 for the service, so landline, unlimited non mobile calls and 200 GB @ 25/5 is costing me $66 more, plus I get unmetered Foxtel downloads as a bonus. As I said - I'm happy with it.

  • I have TPG 100/40 with unlimited downloads, $90/month. The service is fine, although effective speeds seem to be more like 70/30. Their customer service is not very good but I have only used it once and that was to switch from ADSL.

    • I'm honestly looking to pay around $50 where possible hence i mentioned the Aussie Broadband plan and speed suit me perfectly …… until i rang up and found that they can't cover my area.

      • Eh?
In the OP you said you were paying $80 and was happy with it!?

        • Yes was happy with it at the amount of Gigabyte that assigned to my account and the speed, not with what they are offering atm.

        • @tymatk:
The OP sounds like you were complaining about the NBN, but now it seems now you're happy that you can get the same speed/quota for less?

        • @scubacoles:

          No

Basically i have to pay more now for slower speed and less gigabyte.

        • @tymatk:

With Telstra maybe, but not with their competitors..
So how is this an NBN issue and not a Telstra issue?

        • @scubacoles:

Life was smooth sailing without NBN. I can still download on Torrent under Telstra but i heard many other providers have block torrent.

        • @tymatk:

          many? - maybe a few.

        • +2

Ultimately in the long run, you are far, far more likely to be blocked/DMCA'd with telstra than most smaller isps.

Also you happen to be one of the small percentage of australians who were able to get Cable before hand, at worst you get better upload speeds with NBN for very much the same price.

I literally dont know what you are complaining about. Should just be glad you can get NBN/Cable in the first place

        • +1

@tymatk: If you are so concerned with downloads, specifically torrents you should research vpns, peer blocking and private trackers - Pretty sure you are living pretty dangerously by not understanding these torrenting basics, because I am pretty sure all ISP's will care at some point or another.

Unless of course I am mistaken and the "torrents" you are referring to are just legitimate nightly builds of Linux distros - then that's totally above board.

PS - Can vouch for Everynet on that list, nothing but respect for a company who's CEO answers your tech inquiries.

35 Days uptime on ADSL 2 with them (I power cycled then - thanks awesome gearbest ac adapter!)

  • +4

No NBN here just thought i would come and drool over your speeds :'(

  • +5

    Amnet is not rubbish.

Customer service from amnet was equal top in Australia for 2 or 3 years in a row about 2 years ago.

Amnet is part of Amcom which is now part of Vocus.

    • Never heard of them before, thanks and will definitely look into this.

    • How are Amnet for torrenting and copyright infringement notices though?

      • everyone is the same. Please do some research.

  • +2

I have Activ8me 100/40 and TPG 100/40 NBN to my unit.
No problems with torrent whatsoever, there's just sometimes constant dropout like once a month that I originally thought was because of Active8me (therefore I signed up with TPG so I could complain), turns out it's the NBNCo problem.
Effective speed of Active8me is around 95/38 all day everyday. TPG's a bit /()&$@!? 70/30 if lucky, but it's unlimited. No unlimited plan with Activ8me and I always went over the quota. Maybe there's a reason why they have a quota (so they can give you constant and higher speed).

  • +3

    TPG 100/40.

Uploaded over 8TB last month, Downloaded about 2TB.

    • Everyone keeps talking about "100/40" or "xx/yy". What does that mean?
By the way, 8TB upload, I can only imgine that 8TB could only be 4k videos uploading to youtube, otherwise hard to believe anything other than HD videos.

      • 100/40 is the speed, in this case its 100 mb down 40 mb up. You could possibly upload 8tb if you left a decent number of torrent seeding 24/7 lol

        • Ah thanks. Got it now download/upload speed.

        • IIRC Ultimate Cable is 115/2.4. So although Telstra cable claims to be faster, it is really slower, total speed is 117.4 rather than NBNs 140. More importantly Cable is a best 15% faster at downloads than NBN 100/40, while the NBN is almost 2000% faster for uploads. In terms of users experience both NBN and Cable should be great at downloads, but as soon as you need to send an attachment, upload photos or do HQ video chat, Cable performance would hit the wall.

        • Yeah, the cable we get in this country is absolutely woeful for uploads, its often not much better than ADSL.

      • Uploading everything I download to the cloud for safe keeping.

        • that does not add up. how come 2 TB download equals 8TB upload to cloud, or you meant 8TB was just a one time thing.

        • @Oz Bargain 3:

I already had 24TB of data before I got NBN.

Once everything is uploaded there will be less to upload.

        • @samfisher5986:

Are you uploading to OneDrive by any chance?

        • Was just about to thank you for your angel-like seeding generosity.

        • @CheapRichGuy:

          No, Crashplan.

I doubt Onedrive would work that well? not sure.

      • It was a really long nyan cat video 😜

  • +3

From all the reviews on Whirlpool, Skymesh is hands down the best NBN provider and reasonably priced. You don't need to look at any other provider who offers cheap service but don't have the backhaul to even deliver the speed advertised. Skymesh is the answer - end topic.

    • Unless they don't cover your POI. Or if you are really concerned about stability of international speeds during peak times, a lot of people have been having issue with international routing, I was getting under 10mb down to usa recently for a few days, but its back up to ~60mb so hopefully it continues to improve.

I'd also argue that Skymesh plans arn't that great for low data usage, or if you really dislike on/off peak. Though they will match any competitor plan if you don't like what they offer, so i guess thats not really an issue.

I have to say their customer service is really top notch tho. I'd certainly pick skymesh over TPG

  • +5

Also, why the hell is NBN Fibre being installed in an area already covered by CABLE… really this is an outrage, Fibre should be deployed to communities who aren't getting reliable internet… ugh.

    • +2

Many can only get adsl1 and some cannot get a connection at all. Get access to all for adsl2 at least then worry about getting fancy..

    • You'd need to ask Senator Conjob about that.

      • Probably because the cable footprint in that region was very limited, so it made more sense to cover the entire zone rather than trying to avoid the small cheery picked area which cable covered

        • I sincerely hope so.

        • Tony Windsor got early NBN rollout to his electorate when he gave his independent vote to Labor. Pork barrelling the NBN.

        • Probably because 1 or 2 "connected" families of the right politicians lived in that area. They didn't want to miss out - and didn't.

    • Fibre is always laid down in the most densely populated areas because by doing so you connect more people at once and can get the ball rolling faster in terms of figures and revenue.

      • +1

Plenty of densely populated brownfields (Houses/MDUs) with less than adequate ADSL/ADSL2+, and issues such as no room for more equipment (meaning no room for competitors to Telstra), no more pairs, and so on without access to HFC.

    • Suburbs within 20km of capital cities should've been prioritised for NBN. These areas generally have the highest density of people so more people would've got NBN sooner.

      • +1

The NBN was all about improving the average quality of Internet, so non city areas make sense to do first.

City people get Cable and even Fibre in some cases.

  • +8

Don't know which NBN plan to choose? First world problems….

  • +2

If you want some good opinions, mind your language first.
