3.5kW Reverse Cycle Split Air Conditioner

So many different brands and so many negative and positive reviews, I can't see the forest through the trees anymore :\

I'm needing 3,5kw cooling capacity, but won't use the heating much as the house is sufficiently insulated.

Most installers use Mitsubishi or Daikin. Both have got a lot of positive and negative reviews.

I live on the north coast of NSW, so it doesn't usually get over 35 degrees.
As I'm in a strata complex, the inside and outside noise levels need to be low. And of course, I would prefer the unit to not use too much power.
My budget is maximum $1000,-

Can anyone recommend me a big brand for around that price, that's of good quality?

I don't care for cheap brands like Aldi, as they're too hard to get parts for.

Any suggestions or tips what to look for, are much appreciated :)

Panasonic or Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (not Std Mitsubishi).

Daikin is good, but you'll be paying a huge premium that I don't think is justified.

    • Wouldn't the heavy industry ones be dearer and less efficient? Also, where do you purchase those? I assume regular shops like Harvey Norman, Good Guys, etc won't stock industrial ones.

      • Regular shops do- https://appliancecentral.com.au/shop/index.php?route=product…

        Slightly dearer but better.

Why would they be less efficient?

        • Hmmmm plus $99,- delivery. Though 8km down the road is $54,- Doh.
Think I'm going to have to sell up and move to Sydney. If only to avoid delivery costs on large items ;)

        • @Shout It Out:

It just to be free shipping to anywhere in Australia, it was the last time I bought from there (3 times).

Now it's free shipping to Metro Sydney only.

          $42 to Melb.

        • @JB1:

Yeah and $99 to regional areas even though we have a major highway going past us and we're dead in the middle between Sydney and Brisbane. Not to mention an international marina and airport. So I doubt they'll have to go too much out of their way to get the unit up here lol.
It's not like we live in the outback.

And I also don't understand the difference in shipping with the town that's just a few km away.
Might have to get it sent to a mate's place up thwre or something.

MHI is just a brand, distinct from Mitsubishi Electric who also make A/C.

    3.5kW and installation for $1000, I suspect you're dreaming!

    • +1

I don't think he mentioned including installation anywhere, he'd be dreaming if he did.

      • Seems strange to set a budget for the system but not the installation.

    • +1

      You can get pretty close.

I got a 2.5kW Fujitsu from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/207953. HN gave me a $200 Eftpos card instead of $150. So the split system itself was $474. Paid $500 for install. So total paid was $974 installed.

      • So a smaller system and a stuffup just squeeze you under budget. Seems even less likely to me.

        • Scubaholes, is your last reply meant to be for me?
As I said, I know the installation is around the 800 mark and I would like a unit for under 1000. So all up it would be 1800. Surely that should give me something decent. Especially as I'm not planning to live here forever.

  • No, the installation is going to be around $900,-
I'm talking about the unit itself.

    • Have you got multiple quotes? Im in SA, But my quote was $650 for full install & electrical.
which was $100 more than normal price due to extra materials as its gotta go threw 2nd bedroom because unit has to be at rear of property, Strata BS

  • The bloke who quoted on installation, told me he could get me a Daikin FTXS35LVMA for $1050,-
I can't find any reviews online though. So not sure if it's a good unit and price.

Samsung. I had one and the motors was whisper quiet and I LOVED the wifi connectivity so that I could control it from anywhere in the world. I just wish my new Fujitsu wasn't so dumb! You'll get one around the price you want…but then there's installation…and that is usually anywhere between $400-800 alone!

  • +1

Mind you…I also spent over $3000 on ceiling fans (nice ones).
The Samsung 2.5kW unit cost me just over $700 2 years ago.

  • Yeah, WiFi isn't something I'm going to really be needing. Nice to have it, but no drama if not.
    Call me old fashioned lol.
I did see the Samsung ones but again, reviews are 55% more negative than positive.

Installation is going to be fairly easy. Back to back, but need an electrician to put in a surge board and connection from the garage to the livingroom wall.

  • And yes, we have ceiling fans in all rooms as well. This should help move the air through the house a bit.

  • Just an update. I'm still not sure what aircon to get. My neighbours are getting a Fujitsu ASTG12KMCA after they read great reviews. I can't find anything positive about them. Flares that blow up, noisy inside and outside, gas leaks, etc.
So I will scratch that one off my list. Have not been able to find any reviews on that Daikin model either yet.

It's driving me nuts, not being able to find the right unit for a good price. Are there any other units people can suggest?

Fujitsu is quiet, good for apartment etc, for cheap price, look at bunnings, the old day they have 1 horse power $299 which including air-condition special copper pipe, did't see them for a long time.

  • Check the mitsubishi that bunnings sell,

I just done a price beat on the 5kw system… got $160 off.

Just googled the model number and there was a store that had the same with free shipping.. for $80 cheaper..
and for me it then fell into the price guide of the next model down for the cheaper brands like samsung, Lg..

Winner Winner ! Chicken Dinner! on bunnings

I asked a mate who works for bunnings how much staff discount could get and was only $30, THere staff discount goes on the % of profit bunnings makes, So not much on this unit…

    • What's the model number, do you remember?

      • SRK50ZMA-S Bunnings price $1270
appliance central $1239 with free shipping
        -10% = $1115.1
My bad $123 off, Was almost $160 off of bunnings original price..

A little over your budget, But Its a quality brand.. And 5 year warranty..

this is a 5kw system though. I was quoted a 3.5- 4 But I always get the next size up to what aircon guys quote. I like it cold fast. And not to struggle in 40+ days.. And I rekon they use less power if not running full boar whole time

        There is the 3.3 -4kw
        Model SRK35ZMA-S -
        $989 bunnings
$920 @ appliance central with free shipping

        $920 -10%
        = $828

Just make sure you goto website and fill in your postcode on cart to show it as free postage then screenshot it and print it…

        Hope this helps!

        • Oh and dont worry about the box at bunnings saying SRC instead of SRK. the SRK box is the aircon unit the SRC is the compressor unit All is under same Model as there website which is SRK

  • Where exactly are you located shoutitout.?

I run a small electrical and Airconditioning business based in QLD and work up and down the coast from time to time. Locally i am currently running a few supplied and installed pre-summer specials (all Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) 2.5kw for $1400. 3.3kw for $1590. 5kw for $1990. 7.1kw for $2380.

All sizes are available and any brands, but i prefer, recommend and trust MHI.

I will be in Sunshine Coast this week if anyone would like to take these prices up.

    Cheers Matt

  • Spotted The Good Guys online 20% discount??? That would shave some serious cash off an air-con!!!

    $949 - 20% (~$190) = $759 + postage (~$50)

$125 card from goodguys as well ;) (says includes ebay purchases)

      http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/cons/groups/public/documents/b…

      • +1

Too funny!!! Great find! That makes it one seriously cheap air-con for a big name brand!

        • Emailed my landlord (through the real estate) last night with all the details… hopefully it means I'll finally get aircon installed in my room, haha!

  • I'm near Grafton NSW.
I have kind of narrowed it down to 2 brands/models.

    Mitsubishi Heavy DXK12ZMA-S

    Panasonic CS/CU-E12PKR

Prices are much of a muchness. All around the 1000 mark. Installation will be 880
I just don't know which one to choose. I'm kinda stuck.

  • I've made a decision. Finally. Getting the Mitsubishi from the Good Guys eBay for 20% off. Comes to 955 including delivery.
Not sure if the cash back applies to eBay purchases, otherwise I'd get another 125 back.
