PS4 vs XBOne - from an OzBargainer's perspective

Hey peeps,
I don't want to start up the same old debate/religious war.

I'm interested to know which console is better from a bargain hunting perspective. Not just which console is cheaper to buy upfront, but which is cheaper in the long run, buying games in store and online.
E.g. which one has more sales, has consistently lower prices or drops their prices lower for specials? Which online membership is better value for money? Which can you always find bargain bin items for?

A bit of context: I already have a gaming PC and a 3DS, however I really want to play Lego Dimensions, which isn't coming out on either of those, so I need to choose a console. I'm totally uninvested in either camp. I don't have a 360 or PS3 (although I do have a DS3 I use on my PC)

Thanks!

  • I own all three consoles, the only one I regret getting is XB1, my most used is PS4, and Wii U is runner up.

XB1 is a disaster, the only exclusive games worth getting are Halo-(get's worse with each new title..) and Forza-(can just get Pcars instead..) XB1 is a $400 paper weight for me at the moment, I sure hope some good exclusives come out for it!

PS4 runs many games at higher resolution than XB1 (big deal for me as I have a 65" TV) plus PS4 has many genre diverse exclusives lined up.

I will however give XB1 kudos for the controller which is my favorite of the bunch.

Bottom Line- It's not worth owning both PS4 and XB1 imo, you gotta pick between PS4 for higher res and diverse exclusives, or XB1 for a better controller.

Bottom Line for Wii U- Only buy if you know for sure you enjoy games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. If you don't like them, don't buy, and also go get your head checked because there is something wrong with you if you don't like them lol.

    • Just get project cars on pc, i mean that is the best medium for it.

    get sega mega drive!!!!!!

PS4 and XBONE lovers can neg me to infinity.

    • Sega Mega drive has more games than both of them put together, ad infinitum.

      • And cheaper

        • shame about the distribution channel…

  • No one raised the point of what console their friends play. No games I'm aware off that is cross platform compatible at the moment.

    But really your choice op

I think the only people who should comment on these kind of threads to give a truly unbiased opinion are those who own both.

I don't get why some people need to bash the other even though it doesn't affect them in any way.

I own both, but I'm not going to tell you which one I prefer. Do your own research into each console and form your own opinion.

Even some very basic research will make you lean towards one or the other based on your individual preference.

Haters always going to hate so don't trust the internet.

    • I have tried to do lots of research into each, and my opinion sways back and forth as I go.

        Flip a coin.

You can always sell it if you want to switch down the track later on

    1. Choose by what games you want to play. Uncharted series or halo, forza?

    2. Both console have much less performance than gamingPC.

    3. Xbox one has much better vibration in controller for shooting and car racing games. impulse trigger only in Xbox one, not in PC.

    4. PS4 has 2x faster speed than Xbox one in feeling. Xbox one is too slow in update and game install.

    5. Ps+ is cheaper than Xbox live gold, and more players.

I like Xbox one controller with impluse trigger. But game install and update speed is terrible. Takes few hours for the first play.

You dont need to wait in PS4, insert disc you can play it in few seconds, and install and update can run in background.

you have to try Both to see which one is suit for you.

  • Xbox one is cheaper in the long run (by a small margin), however in my personal opinion ps4 is the better console. If you want to save more, you can always buy pre owned games from ebay and resell them in gumtree for few dollars less…. :)

    Just look at the games.

Anyone who looks at the games on both consoles can only choose Xbox. It's an objective fact, it's better. Even the head of Sony was in the news the other day saying they have no games. There's no comparison at all. Where can you play Forza, Halo, Tomb Raider et al ?

    • -1

From Wikipedia, PS4 has 52 exclusives announced, and XB1 has 19 exclusives announced. PS4 wins by a landslide.

      • +1

That's because like at E3 Sony announces games coming out in 3-5 years.

Xbox only showed games coming out immediately.

  • Xbone seems so be better for digital sales as many PSN sales seem to be region locked.

Like everyone else said, If you are buying for exclusives (you have a gaming PC), you need to buy that console.

Both companies give free games with their subscriptions, but the style of games vary between Sony and Microsoft, so that's another point to consider.

    • +1

PSN isn't region locked, you just need a US account. Once you download the game, you can play it via your AU account no problems.

Xbox on the other hand allows you to have multiple regions in your billing profile. I have a US and AU one. I can switch stores and buy from either.

      • So I assume you can use your Australian credit card with a US PSN account?

        • +1

Nope. I buy codes from Amazon for both my US PSN and US Xbox profile. Get the codes instantly and use that.

Amazon requires a US postal address before they'll let you buy a code. But just sign up to Shipito for a free US address and you're good to go.

        Awesome

        PSN SALES NOT REGION LOCKED

        I was wrong.

Just writing that for visibility as we can't edit our posts :)

  • Both are not bargain consoles.PS3 is the one with cheapest games. Next gen consoles are expensive still, only if you want the latest and greatest then you pay for it. Not considered as a bargain console.

Talking PS4 it has less multimedia capabilities than PS3 believe or not. I think that's a downgrade if you want it for media playback.

Also PSN is indeed expensive, Xbox subscription is more value in it. You buy whichever console that has the games you want. Especially exclusives.

    • PS4 also has less games than the PS3. PS4 also has worse games than the PS3. Why are we even talking about these consoles like they're a sane decision.

  • +2

Picked up an XB1 for $299 recently. As far as bargains go that's my argument done lol

    • Picked up an XB1 for $299 recently.

You know that we all now officially hate you, right? :P

  • The difference is personal preference and exclusives. From a $$$/power perspective they're pretty much the same. My preference is PS4. Each to their own.

  • One question for Xbox Live vs PS+:

I know PS+ you have different country subscription and you have to purchase the correct PS+ sub from the vendor, i.e you cannot get a US PS+ sub from the vendor and apply it to AU PS+ account. Is this the same for Xbox Live?

    • Nope. Xbox Live you only need one account and can have different billing profiles. So if you're a gold member you can access prices in any region if you have a billing profile for that region.

Wow ps4 ahead by a mile.

  • I wish neither was a choice; I already have a BluRay player; I'd rather play some videogames, please.

  • I'll try not to be bias towards PS4, that's cause I own one. In terms of the consoles themselves, they both are pretty decent! Xbox One has a lot more exclusives compared to Playstation 4. More AAA games are actually made for the Xbox and this is due to the exclusivity of those games! Playstation on the other hand is a very powerful machine. No, I'm not saying the Xbox isn't a powerful machine. i don't really see the difference. As long as they run the game how they are supposed to run its all fine by me. I would pick the console depending on how many of your friends own which one. If all your friends are on PC then stick with it. I don't see why you should disk out the extra $500 for one game. TBH just play your games on your PC I'm sure you'll be fine without Lego Dimensions :).

  • Wow a lot of spirited fanboys.T here's good points for both consoles either way.

So when I was in your position it came down to the consoles my friends had.
The new gen of console gaming is more and more about online play. I ended up getting the XB1 because more of friends had XB1s than PS4s. So when I login in to play something in the evening/weekend there's always 5-10+ friends online compared to only 1 or 2 for PS4.
Obviously there's a whole world of psycho 12 years old ready to play with you but I prefer gaming with mates.
If more of my mates had PS4s, Id have one of those instead.

  • As a pc gamer, if i was going to get a console, it would be the PS4.

The only reason being the exclusive games. Pretty much everything that comes on xbox is also on pc. But games like the last of us, until dawn and beyond two souls all look pretty sick but ill never get to play them.

  • I have both ps4 and xbox one.
    Ps4: better system stability
    faster startup
    internal transformer
    smaller console

xbox one: better controller(comfortable)(I think using batteries is a advantage)
    cheaper membership
cheaper games coz no one likes xbox one LOL

People keep arguing ps4 is 1080p and xbox one is 960p I can tell you there is no obvious difference.
For Witcher 3, 1080p is freakin lag in ps4. I would rather play this in 960p to get better fps.

  • If you like FIFA ultimate team then Xbox is a better platform. More exclusives.

  • From what i've seen, xbox prices are generally cheaper.

    Disclosure: i don't have either.

  • I find that the Wii U sounds more exciting than both PS4 or XBONE. Though I don't own any of the consoles, I will be getting a Wii-U at least as well as a PS4 or XBONE.

    • +1

I am a defender of the Wii-U, because at least it has some decent exclusive videogames that I can't get on every single platform as opposed to its DVD playing counterparts. However, I would say you may like to hold off on that! This year's E3, Nintendo revealed no new Wii-U games (unless you count Animal Crossing; Amiibo Festival (which you don't)) and it seems like they have no plans to continue developing for the Wii-U in the long run. As Reggie said, next year they're going to reveal the NX, and we don't know what it is, but rumours are that it will replace the Wii-U. However, there is already a huge catalog (comparitively huge to Xbone and PS4, but the previous generation would be rolling in its grave) and Star Fox, Zelda, and Xenoblade are very likely going to be amazing.

My suggestion? Don't buy any of the consoles. Get a PC of mid quality for under $1000 and you can play all the decent games coming out for considerably cheaper, you don't have to pay for online, and you have backwards compatibility from the past 40 years. The only thing you'll miss out in is the mega-graphics games, which, more often than not, have very low quality and rely on their marketing campaign for sales. Ooh hey you also have Skype and Netflix on PC, the two functionalities that the Xbone thinks are more important than videogames.

  • You can pick up a new Xbox 360 for about $280. Who needs the latest model ?

    • +1

i dont think anyone with any brain cells would pay $280 for an xbox 360.

  • I own both. I got a PS4 first because most people I know are PS fanboys. I only picked up the One recently (just in time for Halo) and they are both great consoles in their own right. The One gets a lot of shit for being less ppwerful than the PS4 but for me it really doesn't matter. I go where the (free) games are.

  • +1

Very few people actually answered the OPs question…I'll start with saying from my experience Xbox Live is generally cheaper than PS Plus. Both provide free games each month with the service. Also the availability of EA Access on Xbox provides great value (another subscription service that offers free games, trials for new games etc haven't seen anyone mention this). Initial costs for both consoles are similar. Most games are very similarly priced.

Then Xbox offering backwards compatiblility if interested in last gen games may also be considered good value.

    • On the other hand, if you're interested in last gen games, Sony seems to be trying their best to remake their entire PS3 catalog and claim 'remastered' for the PS4, despite multiple titles being evident that they didn't do a thing to the graphics.
