PS4 vs XBOne - from an OzBargainer's perspective

Hey peeps,
I don't want to start up the same old debate/religious war.

I'm interested to know which console is better from a bargain hunting perspective. Not just which console is cheaper to buy upfront, but which is cheaper in the long run, buying games in store and online.
E.g. which one has more sales, has consistently lower prices or drops their prices lower for specials? Which online membership is better value for money? Which can you always find bargain bin items for?

A bit of context: I already have a gaming PC and a 3DS, however I really want to play Lego Dimensions, which isn't coming out on either of those, so I need to choose a console. I'm totally uninvested in either camp. I don't have a 360 or PS3 (although I do have a DS3 I use on my PC)

Thanks!

      Noooooooooooooo…
That's exactly the opposite of what I was hoping for!!!

I wanted a nice, civil debate on which console is cheaper to use and buy games for in the long term.
From what I've been reading I feel it might be XBOne, because it's not as popular therefore more bargain bin games that no one has bought up.
However, I don't know what their online store prices are like. I keep seeing the PS store posted on OzB, and I never seem to see the XB store posted, so I'm wondering if they never have good sales or if no one ever bothers to post them.

      • They have a lot of sales but rarely are DM prices cheaper than your HN, Target, Big W sale prices, follow Major Nelson and you will see weekly sale pricing and seasonal bigger sales that are more noteworthy.

My 2c is all of this is relative, both consoles have good and bad points, but neither are deal breakers (i.e. IMO the XBO controller is far superior to PS4 but the PS4 controller is still completely usable).

Both are at similar price points give or take 10% shouldn't be a deciding factor. I personally have an XBO and only played it about 4 times, due to time restrictions, I do feel as though it has the bigger exclusive titles however all my friends have PS4s and it's for that reason I'm waiting for the first "slim" version of the PS4 and I will purchase one.

        TL;RD

If your friends play games get the console they have, if not XBO has better games that are more likely to be cheap in bundles on clearance etc.

        • +1

Honestly even the PSN and XBox Live sales are generally the same on both cnonsoles. One week a game will go on sale for Xbox the next it'll be on PSN or visa versa.

        • @SirFlibbled:
THANK YOU!! This is exactly the kind of info I'm looking to hear!

        • +1

@NiteMice: That being said, you can set up a US billing profile on the Xbox or a US PSN account on the playstation to also access their deals. The US deals (on both stores) are generally about the same % off but AU games just cost more, so buying from the US store, even with our crappy dollar, is often cheaper.

But every so often, Sony pull out flash sales on their US store where indie games become dirt cheap (as in a couple of dollars). But I wouldn't buy a console just because of that.

      • Agreed. In terms of the OP's question, Xbone wins due to backwards compatibility for super cheap gaming.

MY CONSOLE CAN BEAT UP YOUR CONSOLE.

    • +2

Let the war of the potatoes begin !

    • There's a better system out there that beats both consoles hands down… and it aint PC or the Wii U… ;P

  • In terms of what you're looking for, I don't think either comment offers much difference there. On my PS3 the playstation store is much better than the microsoft store because of all the old games, but I'm not sure how that has translated over to PS4. I have an Xbox one, it's ok but the games library (of stuff I want to play anyway) is so thin that I just play my 360 mostly.

    • So do you think it would be a viable solution to just buy an old PS3 for now? Maybe revisit this debate in a few years, or so. :/
I could play Lego Dimensions on that, and I'd have access to all of the old stuff.

      • +2

I think VFM it goes PS3, 360, then the two current consoles. I guess it's all up to preference, even though you've said you don't have one :/
I think on a recent dick smith sale you could pick up a PS3 for under $200.
New releases will be getting thinner over the years as Sony and Microsoft phase out the old consoles though, but the current catalogue is much greater (although there are a lot of 'HD remasters' coming out).
The game will look nicer on PS4/Xbone though.
Sorry I can't be more help, the difference between the new ones isn't that great, but the old ones have started showing their age :/

      • I don't think either console is gonna get much cheaper (that the $400 mark its been on sale for). I bought a ps3 about 5 months ago, 2 months later I got a ps4 as well. Kinda regret getting the ps3… All the "best" games are being released on ps4 anyhow, Heavy Rain, beyond two souls, unchartered…

  • I own a ps4 and the amount of times I see games on sale for the xbone and wished it was for the ps4 version is too damn high. :'(
From a bargain hunting perspective I would have to go for the xbone, the console is cheaper too. Although each console has their own exclusive games that you might want to consider. Personally the games that are only on the ps4 suit me better, which was why I went with that.

  • +1

I have the xbox and ps4 and gaming pcs. This is what I found.

Xbox one is better at playing xbox exclusives.

ps4 is better at playing ps4 exclusives.

pc is better at playing games that are available on all systems except for the amount of time you need to tinker with the pc to get shit to work.

If its a console exclusive i'd prefer to get it on ps4 for obvious reasons but i havent come across such a situation yet.

For me right now, Xbox one has provided much more hours of entertainment than ps4 (forza 5/6, horizon 2)

My kid though loves the xbox360 and ps4.

I'm the exact opposite. I'm on ps3 and xbox one mostly.

I'm not in this to save money. But I found I spent a lot more with XBox live because they just got more for sale generally.

    • +1

You don't need to tinker with PC to make games work…

You just need a good PC and good GPU

      • -2

        Bullshit.
So what magic PC does all the work for you? and just lets you play your games Months/years down the track without having to tinker with them? and never have problems?

        • -2

Not sure what PC games you talking about
but most of the games I have played do not need to be tinkered with.

Unless you got a shitty pc,
then might need to adjust the settings.

        • not really, you need to install the o/s, install video drivers, play with detail levels, install periperhals if needed

i'm ok with this, i'm a network engineer but its nowhere near plug and play like a console

one of my PCs is a dual vga card system, you need to play with that to get the best frame rate etc.

if you have a shitty pc then you have less choice

        • -1

          @tyler.durden:

The only problem with my old shitty PC was its low resolution and low frame rate in Crysis.

Now SLI regularly crashes and my monitor refresh rate resets.

Most games are only configured for mainstream hardware so I have to tweak anything not flash based to get it to work full screen.

Updates break games (I spent 40 minutes trying to start GTA V this week).

And all the cool, unique gaming features my gaming hardware came with don't work if you use another piece of gaming hardware. Motherboard features only work if you use an iGPU, on-board sound and an old, wired mouse. Sound card features only work with headphones and has no support for win 10. Mouse's gaming auto detect profiles does not work…

My mates with mainstream hardware don't get these problems.

        • @This Guy:

          well there's your problem..

time to replace your shitty old PC..
and don't do SLI, which tends to have issues

          Replacement
it has benefits not just gaming
since I doubt ppl game all the time on their PC.

          I know I don't game that much
but I bought a good PC for other purposes

        • @tonyjzx:

          What are you talking about?

If you are using your PC for other purposes besides gaming
then all those steps would have been done already..

          I don't game that much
but I still make sure my system is up to date

Console is not just plug play either..
You need to wait for the games to install which might take even longer on a console than on a PC.

PC gaming is not big a hassle to get going as you make it out to be
especially if u regularly use your PC for non gaming purposes
then you make sure your system is already update to date
then all you need to do is just install the games.
And most games have auto detect settings for best settings for your system.

        • @tyler.durden:

          Huh?

I replaced it a few years back. I was complaining about my modern gaming machine.

How do I feed 2560x1440 at 100Hz without SLI?

I've been PC gaming 20 years. I have an xbox for forza. Everything else is on PC.

Most people on steam have a 1080p or lower monitor. My old shitty PC (E6400 with a 5870) was fine for 1600 x 1024 gaming (except for crysis). You don't need much of a computer for that.

All of my gaming problems are to do with my modern gaming hardware.

        • +1

Ehh that guy. He's a crusader for PCs. I get it. He just wants everyone to think the same way he does. I like PC gaming. I like PCs for their high end nature. I dont mind spending money on dual card systems and I dont mind the complexity.

But here's my answer to that… tell me what happened with Batman Arkham City on PS4 vs PC? I'm sure he's got some defence of that too I guess.

  • +1

Depends what games you're into and if your friends play one or the other. I got a PS4 for Final Fantasy (JRPG's in general) and overall I preferred PS4's exclusives and wouldn't use any of the media functions of the xbone. That said I do prefer the xbone controller to PS4 (not that I dislike the PS4 controller), the RARE collection I would have bought with an xbone and the backwards compatibility would mean that you could get some cheaper 360 games. I doubt it would make too much of a difference, but the PS4 is technically better specced and runs most games at 1080p vs 900p of xbone.

2016 will be year of the ps4 i reckon

      • Rime
      • Street Fighter 5
      • No Man's Sky

X1 this year Halo 5, Tomb Raider.
Next year Recore,Quantum Break,Sea of thiefs, Gear of War 4
Im sure there's many more coming i want on both PS4 and x1

  • +1

I've heard some games run better on xbone, Witcher 3 for example. But Tomb Raider runs better on PS4. I don't think you should pick a console based on tech specs… Xbone let's you install games to external HDD…stream games to PC.. Um… Xbone seems to have cheaper controllers, seem em for $50 I believes… PS4 controller seem to float around the $70 mark… Erg…. The main point though is that PS4 seems to have way more exclusives. Xbone only has Tomb Raider 2 and even that will go to PS4 eventually…

But best exclusives are on WiiU…

    Get a PS4 (because that's what I did)

    • Didn't the Xbone version need a framerate cap (20 fps) in the bog area? Afaik PS4 is the better version.

I heard it was the other way round. Xbox has higher overall frame rates but ps4has a 30fps cap for overall smoother game play. But then the ps4 drops down to a 20 fps cap sometimes when it can't hit 30. But ps4 has 1080p vs 900p on Xbox. Overall, I don't think there is much in it. Xbox seems more "useful". Wish I could stream ps4 games to the little htpc in my bedroom for example.

I think you'll be laughing no matter which you get. Get the one with the exclusives you want. Or just chose between Forza and GT (if Sony ever gets round to releasing it…) Or just get Project Cars which I hear hear is the new king of racers.

        • Project Cars is amazing. I've built a racing simulator to use with it since going back to it. It's not a game for using a controller with.

Other way round. Hardware is awesome either way UNLESS you compare it to a platform where they have a whole bunch of exclusive games that are tailored to the platform. Cough* WiiU* all exclusives suck except for WiiU

  • -1

Hard to say, I've been on the console scene for as long as I can remember (PS1 > 4 and same with the Xbox). I'd say the sales are pretty much equal…but it;s more about the features of gameplay, game titles or even the selling point of 'backwards compatability' which has, or will soon be, available on Xbox One for playback of certain X360 titles. After all the time spent on various consoles, my opinion is still a mixed bag

    XB1 has better controllers/handling
XB1 backward compatability list of games for X360 likely to grow
XB1 gaming servers are typically more stable (backed by M$)
PS4 has MUCh better quality game titles (exclusive ones, too)
PS4 navigation/menu's are a lot easier to peruse through than XB1
PS4 games (even multi-platform shared run at higher resolution and/or frame rates (eg: 60fps v 30fps AC Unity with PS4 being better… Ryse ran at 900p natively, not 1080p on XB1)
BOTH have strange designs, but PS4 is a lot sleaker/thinner than XB1
    and so on.

I'll be getting my hands on a brand new PS4 soon straight from a retail store, if you're after one, just shoot me a PM, otherwise best of luck with the XB1…I'd usually say play the PS3 or X360 for a few months and some popular game titles and see what you enjoy more, but you can't do that since you have neither!

  • +2

If you don't care about console exclusives, then I don't think it matters which one you pick, especially if your PC will be your main gaming platform.

Having said that, I suggest taking the following into consideration:

    • If you're planning on playing online with friends, go with the console that the majority of them are on.
    • PS+ is great if you're planning to ever own a PS Vita sometime down the road because of the free games each month.
    • Xbox Live Gold subscriptions can often be found cheaper from 3rd party vendors.
    • Xbox controller is more comfortable IMO.

I have both consoles in our household but the PS4 gets more use.

If you do end up getting a PS4, be sure to grab "The Last of Us".

Edit: Also.. Fallout 4 comes out next month, so be sure to grab that on whatever console you end up getting!

  • +2

    According to some peoples logic
    Game play don't mean shit
    Games don't mean shit
    Story don't mean shit
    Content Don't mean shit
    Features don't mean shit
    Online don't mean shit

Only thing that matters is 1080p

    • +2

Otherwise people would have got a Wii U if all that mattered.

Oh, it also does 1080p and 60fps lol :)

      • Wii U is pretty weak in Online and story. Also lacking in 3rd party for people without decent PC.

        • I agree, not so much for story though, in terms of exclusives, there's a few, but most of the systems suffer for story.

Online is good if you play Splatoon, probably the shortest waiting time I have had to wait for an 8 multiplayer game.

Nintendo need to work on an online account where your games are not just linked to your console, so you can download them again when you purchase a new one.

In terms of online, Wii U doesn't have achievements (they're usually in-game) and it's not as fleshed out as the rest.

Biggest issue with it is its friends system and chat, really disappointing in this day and age. The only systems to really get this right is Steam (PC) and Xbox.

But I'll argue, why do you need systems to have the same online experience? Wii U presents a different system with unique options.

I agree with 3rd party, it's not the system to get for that, its purpose is exclusive games. Buying a Wii U for third party games is like saying mobile gaming is better than PC or console gaming.

        • @justmiike: Normally, I would be in the Wii-U camp. However, Nintendo has abandoned me this year with their quite frankly, disappointing E3.

          • They Don't care about the Wii-U anymore. No new Wii-U games were released.
          • They don't care about singleplayer experiences anymore. All the new games revealed were pre-existing Japanese games or multiplayer co-op games.
          • They overvalued Amiibos. The recent Animal Crossing game has affirmed this, in that they don't care about the game, so long as they move amiibos.
          • Satoru Iwata, who revolutionized not only Nintendo but the videogame industry itself, has since passed away

The Wii-U already has some fantastic games, Wonderful 101 is the best next-gen game by any stretch of the definition. But they've lost all interest and apart from Zelda and Star Fox, there will likely be no new Wii-U games from Nintendo. Which makes me worried, because they might try to get away with the NX being directly tied to Amiibos.

The real loser is the avid videogamer like myself, someone who is unbias that would rather play a good game than a game that looks pretty; something that 2000 Nintendo had in spades! Now that Nintendo isn't putting up a fight, the two mega-companies have no competition, even with each other. So they'll just keep releasing this mediocre garbage that the current generation is famous for until the industry crashes again, ET style. This industry never learns, nor do the consumers.

But hey, the mega-media-fanfare that these awful, good-looking-bad-playing games are blowing out from E3 almost assure fantastic sales with no repurcussions. There are people that think Sonic Boom is good, for christ sake, and I even met a guy who liked the Order 1886!… Well, I haven't. But, you know, if I had, then you'd really know we're in a bad way.

    • Isn't 1080p beyond the, excuse the poor choice of word, comprehension of human eyes?

It's like having 2657652634 kbps mp3s when the human ear can barely notice the difference between 128 and 192.

      • +3

No, unless you're blind as well as deaf and mute lol, the 1080p talk is relevant as we're talking about the superior hardware of the PS4 though. PS4 also has an abundance of great games. It's not easily outselling the Xbone for no reason.

      • You can tell the difference with 720p in comparison to 1080p generally. It depends on bit rate though and the size of your TV. If there's no compression and on a 55" TV, you can easily spot it. Sometimes though, high bit rate 720p movies for example, vs a 1080p low bit rate, the 720p version looks better.

A better argument would be 1080p and 4K. You will need a 75"+ 4K TV to see the difference I would imagine.

In terms of music, you can easily tell the difference between 128 and 192. It's after 192 that it starts to get difficult. Honestly, 128 is pretty bad.

    • Nobody said it does not mean shit..

What makes you think PS4 don't have those things listed above?

Also at the end of the day,

PS4 is more powerful than xbox1

-means I can enjoy the game as it was intended to view at by the developers
rather than some shitty 900p or 720p downgrade
e.g Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin creed unity

-and it allows for more quality games to be made on it e.g. uncharted 4.

  • +4

I have all current gen consoles and just about every major console ever made in the last 30 years.

    I love all 3 consoles!
You got to choose which games you like the most and go with that,Also what do your friends play? What controller you prefer.

My favorite console so far is the Xbox One. Because of games.
It has released some great games/exclusives and some other great coming this year. IMO
X1 is also doing the most to improves it features, with regular updates. Hope Sony will add folders soon. Hard to keep track of all my games.
Sony's year will be 2016 im guessing

    I'm hanging for Uncharted 4!
I have been buying multi platform games on both systems.
Sometimes i get same game for both systems. I can't tell the difference between them. But i get them to play with all my friends. Games like MKX,Destiny,GTA5

Also recommend WiiU if you love Mario,Donkey Kong and all the classics.
looking forward to the new Star Fox!

Also looking forward to Halo 5! My favorite game series of all time.

Good luck with whatever console you get. either way, it's a Win win win!

    • Which exclusive games on XBONE that made it king? Removing remastered games and games gone to PC, the list is only Forza Motorsport 5, 6, Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive that are worth getting. Halo 5 no doubt will be there. But that's it for the time being.

Compare that to PS4, which has 4 times as much exclusives and Wii U which has 8 times more exclusives than XBONE.

Not trying to be negative about XBONE as I like all systems, but the selection of games isn't as respectable compared to the other systems.

      • Id love for you to tell me all these AAA exclusives or games you like (4 times as much exclusives, as you put it?) This year and coming Christmas that you got or that you're getting?
        Now hit me?
Sony's year is coming next year no doubt, this year and last?
I had to force my self at launch to buy Knack, because all they had was Killzone or Knack for exclusive physical releases? Hated Killzone with a passion.(I did Buy Killzone Shadowfall at launch) Knack was OK, took me 6months to finish it. But i did! Second Son was awesome! the Order 1886 was a reason i bought PS4. But it was such a let down :( Resogun was my favorite launch game. Loved it!

Love all your points this is exactly how I feel about it too. In my opinion the xbox will be cheaper as live is only $40 a year if you're planning to play online. But the most important thing is what games you like and what consoles do your gaming group play on. In the end I got an xbox and a wii u because Halo is my favourite game of all time, and I use the wii for 8 player smash bros. Op choose the console with the exclusives you like!

  • simple for me as I'm a big fan of Uncharted franchise! The only choice for me is ….you guess it…

    • +1

XBOne, so you can get Tomb Raider ASAP? :P

      • there's tomb raider on PS4 no? but compared to Uncharted…you know who's the winner

        • Uncharted is no doubt the Winner!
But don't count out Tomb Raider?
Last game was amazing! and new one looks fantastic.
I will be getting both at launch.

I like the best of all worlds! I love gaming, i leave the hate to fanboys while i play all the great games too.
Happy gaming on whatever gaming console or PC you prefer :)

  • Ps4 because I'm more interested in its exclusives than xbone at the moment. Will get xbone eventually but probably not this year :)

    • So what PS4 games you getting this holiday season? For exclusives i mean?

      • Infamous, bloodborne, tearaway, the last of us remasterred, ffx and x-2 HD, uncharted, dynasty warriors, etc.
I don't play pc mind you, plus everyone I know have a ps4, so we can play online

  • +1

Xb1 will now support xb360 games.

    • Not all of them

  • Just curious, is dimensions coming out on the Wii U? If so, that might be worth it seeing as all the MH goodness is on Nintendo products atm…

I'm personally planning on getting a PS4 when KH comes out, I believe they both cost just as much to run in the long term (XBOX live and PSN both cost) so it's best to choose the console based on the games you want to play.

Either way I'm a PC gamer, never will have any backwards compatibility issue that isn't solvable that way XD

    • +1

      Yes, it is…
Hmmm… And the Wii U would match nicely with my 3DS.

      • I guess that solves your dilemma =P

      • While the Wii U is great, there's not much cross platform compatibility between the 2, outside of Smash and buy on one platform, get it free on the other (which is mainly limited to indies and Mario vs Donkey Kong).

  • +1

Man you have opened world war 3 up in the ozbargain forums.

  • +2

Had a quick read over the thread.

This is the reason Xbox vs Sony threads always get pulled down.

OP, it's going to be your choice and your choice only.

I got the xbox for it's games, and I've used xbox since the original. Halo is my baby.

Do you play halo or god of war? It's the games/people you play with that decide. Not a bias thread like this.

    • My aim with this thread was to get a feel from people who actually own the consoles which console has games on sale more often/at better prices. I explicitly didn't want this to turn into a insult-slinging competition.

I don't play either. Like I said, I'm pretty fresh to the console scene. I'm into PC gaming, and Nintendo, but I haven't had any previous PS/MS consoles.

Get both PS4 and X1 if you can and wiiU.
Then you can have all their heavenly glory,That each console will give you :)

  • +1

To note I've actually been with Sony since PS1 and I normally prefer them but I have both consoles now, PS4 will be my main, mainly cause it's slightly more powerful but the main things to look at are:

    PS4:

    • Hardware capabilities allow more 1080P 60FPS games.
    • PS+ required for online play (unless stated otherwise by games)
    • Monthly free games with PS+ BUT they're only temporary i.e. once your subscription ends you can no longer access the games
    • Small library
    • No backwards compatibility (for the most part), only way to access older games (unless remade/remastered/re-released etc…) is via PSNow which requires a subscription on top of PS+
    • UI/OS is mediocre.
    • Controller is a lot nicer than DS3, lower battery life BUT controller does not have X-Input & Sony's promised PC drivers are non-existent resulting in 3rd party + a lot of fiddling

    Xbox One:

    • Hardware capabilities do allow for 1080P 60FPS games but there are limitations that result in some games being 1080P@30 and even some as low as 900P.
    • Xbox Live Subscription required for online play (unless stated otherwise)
    • Monthly free games with XBL Gold AND they're yours even after the subscription ends. The titles are usually better than PS+ 1s too.
    • Small library
    • Backwards compatibility feature is coming, you'll even be able to play 360 games straight from their disc
(THIS is the biggest value point of the Xbox One and really screws Sony on their crummy PSNow crap, the X1 library will be span 2 generations but nearly 3 generations, I say nearly 3 as there's "rumours" that because it will run the 360 engine, it may even support Xbox Original games)
no subscription required to use backwards compatibility either, unless you're invited to the current previews they're running. EDIT: Note I did forget to point out, they're adding the backwards compatible games to the a supported list so not every single 360 game will be supported, at this stage there's no info on whether they'll open the engine to emulate any 360 game as well.
    • UI/OS looks a lot nicer than PS4s.
    • Controller is a lot nicer than 360s and even feels better than DS3/4, battery life is good on AA but same as PS4 on battery pack, BUT controller does support X-Input and plugs straight into PC via a micro USB to USB cable, once you've installed drivers yourself, you're set to play no more fiddling around.

In the end, Xbox One is the better value system, I have 360 games that I have and still want to replay but don't want to have to purchase remastered editions every time. There's also 360 games I've missed out on, not to mention some PS2 games I really liked were on 360 and some I even missed out on, and to be able to access these without having to fork out more money is a win for me.

what you say about xbla isnt true

on the 360, you keep the games, on the ONE, you dont if your subscrip expires

      on the ps3/ps4 you dont

i found xbla subscript is cheaper

not that it matters to me, i dont think the free games are worth it but there have been some ok giveaways on 360

      • Oh my mistake, thanks, I'll try to correct it if it lets me but for some reason I don't have a button to edit my own comment. Also neither, I hate subscriptions for reasons I won't go into now, but I figured the OP would want to know about it in case they planned on using the subscription features as well.

      • You do keep the xbox one games if your Subscription runs out mate!
        That's a fact!
I do think PSN give aways are better free games most of the time. But they go away if you stop paying.

    • It made me laugh that you said small library for both.

I'm sorry, aren't these videogame consoles? Shouldn't the game library be the selling point?

      • Yes but you are comparing a console that is TWO (2) years old with the past generation which is TEN (10) years old.

One cannot reasonably expect the new consoles to match the catalog of the past generation RIGHT NOW.

Even so that's just his opinion. For you to make a comment like that shows some faulty reasoning on your behalf.

        • If anyone has the opinion that the new generation consoles have a large library…. Well, I'd point them to the PS2's exclusive game catalog after its second year. Then I would laugh profusely. Hell, even the PS3, which had the "It has no games" joke going for such a long time, had a better release library than these consoles do after 2 years. I would kill for some giant enemy crab right about now.

        • This is problem with that premise, no one cares about the way the world was two years after the PS2 or PS3. It may have been awesome, its ancient history. The only thing people care about is whether its worth spending your money now and if you dont well then great, goodbye. There are 25 million plus combined who do but of course I'm guessing your response is that people wasted their money. Oh well back to Forza 6…

      • The library isn't the only selling point of a console, quantity does not equate to quality for video games, but I had to point out that both of them are pretty much on par with each other bar Microsoft's upcoming 360 backwards compatibility feature so that the OP would be able to compare them better, it's like comparing any product you're deciding with, you're not going to skip 1 of the big points regardless of how irrelevant they are (pros & cons, simple as that). I mentioned they were small because they are just that, small libraries and I don't want the OP to assume there's a massive library of games to pick from for any reason.

  • I have to agree with a few people in here, my PS4 pretty much collects dust these days, with microsoft getting the rights to the new tomb raider, I can only hope it's a timed exclusive and will see the game sometime next year come to PS4 as it's the one game I've been waiting for.

    • I think for me and for many people, the ps4 exclusives have been unappealling…. until dawn, bloodborne, order 1886 etc.

also the future titles dont interest me either, uncharted, zero dawn

if you like that stuff the ps4 is for you

    • +1

The new Tomb Raider is a timed exclusive, but it isn't coming to PS4 until late 2016.

You'll be waiting a whole year. It will come to PC much sooner though. Which really should be the platform of choice from OzBargainers perspective. The deals on PC crazy.

      • I really would have thought of all possible games to have exclusively for the playstation, it would have been tomb raider. It's pretty much a cult classic that gave the ps1 such great success (among other titles). I can only assume securing the uncharted series has taken it's toll money-wise.

  • I say work out what exclusives you are most interested in for either console at see whats cheapest to buy when this Lego game comes out in terms of christmas bundles etc

Given that you are likely predominately invested in PC gaming - I don't see you spending enough time on the console to discern (if any) hard dollar value differences between the two consoles.

Theres fancy tricks you can do between Xbox One and Windows 10 from what I've heard (but know nothing about) perhaps they will appeal to you as well.

If its a biased vote you are after - then I'll vote for Xbox one based on the fact that I've played Xbox 360 until last weekend after building a new pc

  • I own both and find no real difference between them.

Ultimately it comes down to how many friends you have playing on a particular console and which exclusives you prefer.

Also the Xbox allows you to plug in an external HDD which I've found invaluable as I had constantly deleting games for more space. I wish the PS4 kept the ability of HDD swapping under the PS3. It was ace.

  • Wii U is probably a better choice for a PC gamer, since it offers the most exclusive titles.

    • I'm starting to think you're right… AND it's cheaper!
Now I just have to convince my brother that's what we should get.

      • big problem with the Wii… its in it last year of life with the NX coming

the xbox and ps4 are whatever they are but they're at the early stage of their lives

but if the WiiU games interest you, go for it

      • Wait for NX to come out, Wii U will drop price.

        • You're potentially waiting until 2017. If you're thinking of buying the Wii U, buy it now.

  • Since I have a PC the PS4 is a good fit as an additional platform as a number of the XBone exclusives come to PC as well, that way I get to play more games.

  • What do your mates play? If they all have XBONE get that if they have Ps4 get that.

This whole thread is just click bait, I know people that have owned both and swapped back and forth, playing the best titles on each console.

  • So, going by the voting system that the OP implemented I'd say the people have decided. 66.6% say PS4 as of right now.

    • +1

More like 66.6% have a PS4 as of right now

  • PS4. It's disturbing to see the Xbone struggle with 1080p/60fps.

I'll buy an X1 in a few years, but for now at this price I wouldn't bother.

  • +1

Gaming is a expensive hobby, get over it ;)

I don't think there will be a very significant difference between the 2 consoles, especially if you might still buy most of the games from retailers, and retailers don't care which platform the game is on. If you just want save more, I might say Xbox One (I don't have PS4 myself, but I do have many friends with PS4 so I think I know it enough. If I'm too biased or wrong about the facts on PS4 side, please let me know). I'll just point out some thing everybody seems to overlook here (subtle most likely, but if you want to go true ozbargainer…)

    1. EA Access. For 40 AUD a year you can play all the older EA games, PVZ Garden warfare, dragon age inquisition, battlefield 4, fifa, NFL, and they will just keep adding more games to their vault. Also when a new game comes out, you will have 6-10 hours of trail time to play the FULL game too. Really a bargain especially if you jump in right now and don't already have the games. They also do code giveaway from time to time

    2. Unlike PSN, Xbox Live is not region locked. This means you can go switch to Russia region and buy digital games from there and get something like 1/3 off right off the bat, seriously! Of course you need the payment options, could be tricky since you need a local billing address, cards should work with purchases, but whether your card company is ok you use a different billing address is another story. Alternative is to buy credits for other regions, they have credits for sale from time to time too. Note credits in your live account are locked to that region and not transferable. (Speaking of credits, I saw PSN cards all over Coles, being physical means potential sales from retailers, so if that ever happens take advantages of it PS users)

    3. This might be the place where the difference is subtle: Games with Gold. You will probably need the Live gold anyway (you can always get gold for 30 USD on cdkey.com or stuff. PS+ is a bit more expensive). With the 360 backwards compatibility you get up to 4 games with GWG (sometimes 360 & one titles overlap). Now that's on par with PS+, but because 360 has a much larger library you will get more triple A titles (just check GWG on 360 in the past few months). (Side note for PS4 users, you can always register a JP region account, their PS+ free games are always better, but of course a lot of the games will be more Japan-centered)

    4. Since you're getting a console, this might save you a smart tv all together. I know PS4 can technically do it too, but I heard xbox one can do the whole home entertainment better with One guide and TV Tuner. I could be wrong though since I really don't know what the PS4 side has to offer. (Haven't used a tv for years tbh). Kinect is honestly a great addition to that home entertainment aspect with voice control and stuff, but come on, who's gonna buy that ? I put it there in case some might consider though.

That's what comes to mind atm. A bit off topic, to OP, if you want to choose a console, you really just want to consider what games the platform has to offer. If you don't like the games but buy it anyway because it's cheaper, you might as well not buy it because it will be a dust collector and you will just end up losing money to buy the console to begin with.
