    What's the cost after the 6 month trial is over?

    • $12

    • It depends on what you want version you want. https://www.avast.com/en-au/store

    • If your smart about what sites you visit or where you are downloading your software from..

      You can use Microsoft security essentials.

      It's good enough and won't slow down your system.

      ===

      After installing any third party security software
      I notice my system feels/runs a bit more slower.

          It's faster and better in every way to windows 8.1 and 7.
          Ive had absolutely nothing bad to say about windows 10

          avast on the other hand cause many many BSOD's on both withdows 7 and 8 and 8.1 and now this problem with windows 10.

          go ahead try and tell me avast isn't the problem again…

          @holden93:

          It's faster and better in every way to windows 8.1 and 7.

          How does it compare to Windows 9 though?

          You high again?

          You're avoiding the question.

          @jv: But you just answered mine.

        • +1

          @holden93: Windows 10 is the first version since XP that I have enjoyed using. In fact it's the best Windows OS to date by a country mile in my opinion. A couple of extra tweaks and I could not fault it.

        • @attfiecz2:

          So it's better than Windows ME ?

        • @jv: Ah Windows chronic fatigue. Good times.

  • So we have to uninstall avast if we have it already?

    • I didn't and it worked, however you do have to restart of your computer after the install.

    For those using ordinary avast, make sure to update the software to the latest version to fix a critical security hole.

    "The golden standard in PC security" - lol

    • +4

      I know… I read that bit and was already laughing before I got to the end of the sentence :).

      I thought paying for bloated internet security died with Norton?
      I guess not… too many suckers out there willing to hand over their cash for 'protection'.

      Didn't the Mafia offer protection too? :)

      It is actually one of the best antivirus programs available:

      http://chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php

      • I see Trend is even better which I was thinking to switch to (refer my comment below)

      • +1

        "Gold Standard" does not mean "One of the best". It means the best, the go-to solution, the winner of the gold medal. The chart you referenced shows Avira, Bitdefender, Panda and Trend with perfect scores. Kaspersky and Fortinet also beats it. 7th place is not a gold medal, a gold standard or a gold anything - it's 4 places behind Bronze. It doesn't place. It's the "Also ran" standard.

        • +1

          That is just one factor though. It's 7th in detection but has the lowest impact on system performance out of all of them. Some people might think that is a worthwhile trade-off - best system performance with 99.3% detection - and thus consider Avast the best antivirus solution.

        • @dazweeja:

          Av_comparatives award best overall anti-virus awards and Avast doesn't come close to winning it. "golden standard" has an unambiguous meaning - it means that it is widely accepted to be the go to solution that is preferred above others, not that "Some people might think that is a worthwhile trade-off". I suggest you just accept that the claim was misleading and move on.

        • @syousef:

          I don't agree with your definition but Avast is actually "the go to solution that is preferred above others". When people choose an antivirus, they generally choose Avast:

          https://www.opswat.com/resources/reports/antivirus-october-2…

        • +1

          @dazweeja:

          A gold standard is a BEST solution not a most used solution. The gold standard may be surgery, but only a handful of people might be able to afford that, so most might pop a pill that comes in distant second for effectiveness instead. That doesn't mean the pill is a gold standard.

          What the stats you pointed to show is that people don't have a clue when it comes to AV and they're choosing products based on what worked when they bought a machine 3 years ago.

          Did you notice that Microsoft Security Essentials was 2nd on that list and that 28% went into "other" which is more than Avast. So even according to what you've shown only 1 in 5 people choose it, almost as many people still use MSE, and there are more people using "other" unnamed antivirus. Bitdefender isn't on the list, and Kaspersky only has 2.3%.

          Are you telling me you would advise people to download MSE if they don't like Avast?

          Give up. Really.

        • @syousef:

          That was a lot of words to prove that your definition wasn't a very good one. Probably why I said I didn't agree with it.

          Now it seems you want to talk about which is the "best" (which was the term I was using) but of course the "best" is a subjective measure (which is what I said). Maybe I think an antivirus with 99% detection and almost no impact on system resources is the best. Maybe you think an antivirus with 100% detection and a significant impact on system resources is the best. Neither of us is wrong because we both weigh competing criteria differently depending on our preferences and requirements. You're the one tying yourself in knots trying to claim something is objective when it's obviously subjective and ambiguous. Next you can tell me what is the best OS, or the best car, or the best anything really…

        • -1

          @dazweeja:

          Ok you need short words. Got it.

          1. Definition mine it is not. OP definition. Straw man argument silly.
          2. Gold standard not most popular. That your argument above. Measurably best on key criteria it is. "Balanced" is not usual criteria. Most effective is. Term comes from medicine. Not from my backside.
          3. Purpose of virus scanner protect system. Lightest protection is no scanner at all. Lead to darkness that does. Yes.
          4. See first paragraph last post. If too many words take a rest you will. Then come back. Yes.

          Yoda disturbance in stomach feels. Time for dinner it is. Yes. Complaints about many words interested in I am not. Give up or not. Up to you.

    • Any antivirus is far too unreliable to be the gold standard of PC security.

      Avast is a decent AV if you're the kind of user who needs one, but it's not even the gold standard of consumer antivirus programs so the marketing here is a bit over the top.

    My current AV software is about to expire so am looking for a new one.

    Has anyone used Avast before? Is it any good?

    Otherwise I will renew my current one

    • +2

      Avast is one of the best of the free ones (user friendly so easy for non tech people). Good antivirus and keeps an eye on browser plug ins and some other software that can 'carry' viruses into your computer. Worth it for this 6 month trial. If you can be bothered you can generally string endless 6 month trials of the best suites together to get free paid apps.

      Trend may have performed well in that one chart, but over time it has not been great. I would recommend Kaspersky over it. Regularly performs at or near the top of tests and has good ancillary things like Safe Money for secure financial transactions.

      Bitdefender is also very good and you can often get a 6 month trial if you look around on here.

      (being a comp tech I have perhaps more experience of different antivirus than most).

  • Just put this on my parents Windows 10 pc and it says Trail Mode 138 days remaining, this right?

  • 180 days trial mode activated. Thought it was the full version.

    • Trial doesn't mean you get crippled functionality. Just an expiry date that forces you to go back to vanilla Avast when timer is up.

      • Yeah but the ads still show up.

      • what's the difference with vanilla?
