best price so far but still an overpriced rolling ball toy…

    • you are new with apple don't you ? hahahaha

Now you're comparing Apples with Oranges…

    • +1

      would've been ~$212 during the eBay sale….

  • +4

What. They announce RRP at 250 and they sell at below RRP?

    • -4

perhaps this is not the droid we are looking for. either way i wouldn't be giving any money to apple

    • As I keep banging on: the RRP has nothing to do with value other than being a device to manipulate your sense of value which happens automatically and unconsciously.

Since that's all it is it doesn't make much sense to "waste" it by actually selling at that price.

I think maybe his point is Apple is notorious for trying to force retailers that sell Apple products to fix pricing based on Apple's RRP (especially for current gen stuff) .. sell below that and you could be looking at losing the ability to sell official Apple stuff altogether.

        • +5

          this…isnt….made…by….apple…..

        • -4

          @SBOB:

None of apple product made by apple,

Apple just subcontracted to some sweatshop in china

        • @medium_tight:

fine, put made in quotes… "made". Thanks for adding your useful contribution.

        • -5

          @SBOB:

          you are welcome sir

I know, my statement could hurt some sheep's heart baaaaaa…..

        • +1

@SBOB: I didn't say BB8 was made by Apple. I was in fact trying to point out the hypocrisy of Apple selling it lower then RRP when others are told by Apple not to sell their goods in the same manor.

        • Apple stuff is on sale all the time.

From memory Apple products often carry a low margin for retailers, so I'm guessing the lack of price fluctuations is more likely due to retailers not having much room to move, not because they are forced to sell at a specific price.

        • @Elijha:

apple do no such thing… they just have such slim margins to the retailer which essentially forces the retailers to limit their discounting.
But there are countless 10% off apple deals at JB and DSE to prove your comment wrong anyway

        • @medium_tight: they always do that with every one of their item and are the best to do in the market!

        • As far as I know, it's not actually legal to enforce a retail sale price in Australia. (Of course not saying it doesn't happen in some form)

Wow, Apple now have IOS and-droid…..cough

I have the Sphero 2.0 which I ended up playing with for about 2 hours in total and have not played with it since. I'm actually waiting for my nephew to hit 3yo before I break it out again for him to play with as it scared the heck out of him when I first showed it to him (and he had a tendency to pick it up and drop it onto the HARD WOODEN FLOOR).

The BB8 is the same size is the Sphero 2.0 and the little head thing is quite ingeniously done. This will probably be one of the more popular XMass toys this year but I would only get one if you have young kids (probably 4-12) that can have more fun with it.

One potential downside is that to have the BB8 head on, you cannot have what the manufacturer called a Nubby (ie. a rubber sleeve for the Sphero to give better grip and dirt/general protection). One thing I hated was that if I used my Sphero 2.0 outside or on hard surfaces, the surface would scratch up or just lack grip and spin on the spot for a bit before shifting. Of source you can just pop off the BB8 head but it kind of defeats the purpose of getting this Star Wars inspired toy.

It would be fine on carpet though so this will probably be a good solution if you like looking after your toys.

    My 2c.

We purchased a bunch of Dash and Dot robots for our primary school. Certainly a good rival for this droid.
    https://www.makewonder.com/dash

There are various apps for it ranging from a full GUI that would suit young children to a blockly style visual programming app.

The kids in year 3 have been crating algorithms to draw 2D shapes in inquiry lessons about angles.

Would suit kids from prep (4yrs to… Infinite)! Definitely recommend all schools to get on board with some kind of robotics/coding from primary school. Definitely check it for your kids Xmas pressie

    • Great Info and link, Thanks for sharing it.

    • These look great, hadn't heard of them before.
I see they are available on Amazon also, same price but shipping is 1/4 of the price, and can combine with AMEX 15% off deal
      Dash
      Dot

  • A colleague brought his to our 'bring a pet to work-day'. It looks cool and was fun to play with for about an hour or so . It has no collision sensors and the holographic message only work on the app :( Also drove my Shih Tzu ape-shit.

    • Too many animal mixed metaphors…

  • I was also surprised when I saw these "cheaper" at my local Apple Store. I'm sure any of the other retailers like JB would be quick to match or beat that tho.

  • I got one for a friend for $200 when Target had their 20% off toys sale ;)

    • there's a 25% off target ebay atm.. but seems like the BB8 is not listed on their ebay store :(

      • I actually got jb hifi to price match it ;)
