    m.2 vs SATA - opinions?

    • +1

Samsung drives? Same performance, I have the M.2 version, it's great if you have an M.2 slot on your motherboard.

    • +1

Own both … SATA is so much easier to procure HDDs (I have many lying around). m.2 is fast but having to buy a whole new stick bumps up the price of your NUC.

    • m.2 has higher throughput but most drives aren't fast enough to take advantage. If your motherboard has a m.2 slot Id probably get one cause they're flashy and new, but otherwise SATA is fine.

    • +5

Bear in mind not all M.2 drives are created equal. If this is just the Sata version via M.2 connector it's pretty much the same speed. the PCIe m.2 versions however are a lot faster
      Edit: this - http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/02/understanding-m-2-the…

    • M.2 is just a type of connector. You should check if your drive is an M.2 SATA or M.2 PCI-e 2x, 4x.

M.2 PCI-e is blistering fast, but very expensive. My current Samsung M.2 Pci-e 256 GB chip has read speeds well above 1 GB/s

    • The Samsung M2 drives have significantly higher results on benchamarks than their already excellent Sata drives, especially read speed from memory. I don't know if this speeds up real world activities like OS startup, photoshop startup time, or loading a game with lots of high resolution textures such as a heavily modded Skyim.

  • Cheap! Thanks TA

  • +1

If only I could use that $50 cashback voucher with this deal. Too bad this expires before those come in.

    • It's only $12.59 difference.

  • Damn. Yesterday I Impulse bought the Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB for $216 from Futu Online although that had a delivery ETA of October 6th. This is a much better deal.

    Thanks anyway TA

    • just better by $4.

      • Shopping Express delivery time is before the end of this week. October 2nd. Pretty good considering the public holiday on Monday.

    • +1

      $4?

  • +10

Worth noting these are 4th gen not the current 5th gen.

    • Hi yacman,

Hmm…did you see a 5th Gen sold at this price?

      Cheers
      SE

    • I'm confused. Are you referring to the samsung drives or the NUC's?

      • +8

        Hi kahn,

He is referring to the Intel NUC.
5th Gen NUC cost much more than the current 4th gen offer. So i am simply asking if there were similar prices on the 5th gen nuc.

        cheers
        SE

        • +10

Thanks, although now I'm confused why your reply has been downvoted seven times so far. I checked the item descriptions for the NUC's and they do mention that the CPU is fourth generation. If anything, yacman's comment should be the one that is downvoted.

      • +1

Processor Type: Intel Core i3 4th Gen.

        it;s about the NUC's

        • +3

Sorry I wrote my comment fast and assumed most would understand the reference.

This is for the NUC's they are previous gen, thought it was worth noting in-case people didn't realize as it's easy to miss (essentially just a specification and a yellow USB port on the front are the easiest way to tell without remembering model numbers).

Rep I wasn't implying that this wasn't cheap or that 5th gens could be purchased for this price although it's worth noting when the 5th gens first come out eBay had their 20% off sale and the i5's were going for around $480.

Those prices are long gone with the AU dollar now though ;(

        • +1

          @yacman:

All good mate, anyway according to your comment the current price of the 4th gen ~ $390 is much cheaper.
Current price on staticice is $459

          Cheers

  • What are people's thoughts on the 850 EVO quality, and this price? Want a bigger SSD but haven't looked into them at all.

    • +3

Lots of people ask the same question over and over in the Sandisk SSD deals. The point is that Samsung is the top of the crop when it comes to quality. Just get it, it's the best value price in terms of cost per GB.

      • +2

Samsung is the top of the crop when it comes to quality

I still remember the way Samsung Australia dealt with the 840 series problems: dismissing reports, discrediting people with issues, and denying there was even a problem even when it had been acknowledged internationally.

They would have gained more respect from me if they'd acted more responsibly and respectfully towards their customers, even though I understand they would have been in damage control due to the enormity of the problem.

Since my 840 (not EVO) was affected, but not to the same extent as the 840 EVO, I just sold it on, giving the buyer full disclosure and DiskFresh to run every 3 months. I still own 2 other Samsung SSDs, but it'd take me a lot for me to buy another one.

        • You know, I'm having issues with the 840 EVo as well… installed the IRST and now my PC doesn't shut down fully (everything is off but the tower is still on). There are people that said it's fine to install IRST with it and some say it's not… i guess in my case, it isn't =(

    • +1

I have 2 128GB 840 EVOs (last generation) in RAID 0. Great speed, easily get 750-900MBps sequential reads and 600~MBps writes. Great speed SSDs, and the Samsung software makes them really good. Decent price as well for these.

(side note: the array is backed up onto my internal 3TB every week just incase one fails.)

      • +1 for the side note :)

Too many times I've heard of people complaining when their RAID 0 SSD's fail (not saying yours will) on the assumption they should last 20+ years :)

Having said that none of the Samsung SSD's I've had have shown any problems yet.

      • You should get 4x and raid them :)

    • "Not only is the endurance higher, but the 850 EVO's performance is also better compared to its predecessor." - http://www.anandtech.com/show/8747/samsung-ssd-850-evo-revie…

  • Got the 500GB SSD. Thanks TA!
    $211.99 to be exact. 1c is 1c :)

    • +2

I just bought the 1TB SSD for $415.01. You could give me your one cent so things balance out.

      • +1

Why don't you give them your 1c so it balances out better?

        • +8

I can give you one cent worth of math lessons.

        • +5

@kahn: Read it backwards. I math ungood.

      • I grabbed 1 tb also ….. nice to see the big SSD units being discounted at last

  • What does the Nuc have over the PC Byte offer…..a 550w at 85% efficient 82w compared to 65w NUC and NUC smaller form factor?

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171950958916 = $551

Nuc I5 here will be $600 with 250GB EVO SSD and 8GB ram….no 1TB HDD

    • Size. The NUC units are tiny.

    • +1

      As an example.

  • +1

What about a 25GB EVO offer closer to $100????????

  • Insane price. I bought the evo 840 1TB at A$425 when the exchange rate was around US$0.89, and it hasn't gone down until now. Jump this!

  • +2

How about warranty - in the product overview 1 year warranty mentioned but in specifications, it is listed for 5 years ?
Standard warranty by Samsung is 5 years !!

    • Same question!! Thats confusing me abit. While FutuOnline list SAMSUNG SSD 850EVO comes with 5 years Warranty.

    • +2

Thanks for proof reading, the warranty will be 5 years warranty & listing will be revised :).

      • Still waiting for my M.2 SSD to ship… its been 48 hours now…. whats going on ?

        • +1

No worries buddy, can you please PM me the order id?

          cheers
          SE

        • +2

Had a quick check, it has been packed and labelled so shipment should be today.

Order placed 28th Sep 2015, did you get overly anxious? :P

        • @ShoppingExpress:

Apologies… i thought today was payday (30/09) lol… my bad… yeah i sort of am. I have one of these… just need one more to get my laptop done (raid 0).

        • @frysie:

        • @ShoppingExpress:

fingers crossed it gets here on friday… auspost has been crap lately… 5-7 days to get parcels from sydney :(

        • +1

          @frysie:

Thanks for the feedback, hopefully it's just a temporary thing.

there's not much choice for courier company are there?

        • +1

          @ShoppingExpress:

Not really, auspost owns startrack and now they are crap. fastway wouldn't touch ever… leaving couriers please which also sucks as well as TNT….

        • @malouphix:

will have a look, thank you :)

        • @ShoppingExpress: You're welcome. Please let me know if you end us using it. :)

      • +1

Thats alright! Thanks for reconfirm this. Just ordered 500gb one. Hopefully it can be delivered to Adelaide this weekend.

      • +2

Just because of 5 years warranty, bought 1TB ;)
        Cheers

        • +1

you know that the 5 years is standard with samsung SSD's ? PRO versions is 10.

        • +1

          thanks for your Support!

Bought a Netgear R7000 also from Shopping Express eBay for $175.91 and free delivery http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/231142384235

  • +1

ShoppingExpress Delivers fast. Have been buying stuff from them and they are superfast. Bought a Netgear 24 port Gigabit switch on Sunday night with 15% code and it was delivered today.
Just FYI, Futuonline and SE seems to be the same parent company or chaps :)
Edit: Also good to see that they did not jack up their prices.

  • +2

What are the differences between these two listings? What does the BW represent?

Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SATA III Internal Solid State Drive SSD MZ-75E500 - $249.40
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-850-EVO-500GB-2-5-SATA-II…

    Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SATA III Internal SSD MZ-75E500BW 540MBs - $255
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-850-EVO-500GB-2-5-SATA-II…

    • I believe one may be the SSD alone (no accessories), whilst the other has the standard accessories as well. Can anyone confirm?

  • +2

"Just FYI, Futuonline and SE seems to be the same parent company or chaps …."

I think that wireless1 and sydneytech are also paired similarly.

    • The reason that I think that is that I noticed that they both increased the price of a NAS on eBay on Sunday afternoon within one minute of each other. Prices matched each other before and after the change. I'm reckon the price rise was to take advantage of the 15% eBay deal. Luckily, Shopping Express advertised the same product today at the previous price the others had. Thanks Shopping Express :)

    • +1

If this is the case maybe the SE rep can help me with my futu issue since I dont think a futu rep comes on here?

  • Anyone knows the easiest way to transfer Windows 8.1 OS, apps and the rest of the contents from existing 120gb ssd to the new 500gb ssd without reinstalling everything from scratch? Thanks

  • is it worth to change 840evo to 850evo? I have the 1tb 840evo. thanks.

    • +1

Yes, 850evo heaps better. I can grab that old ssd off you to save you some pain :)

      • Wow thanks! How much you looking at? 1TB is mine.

        • Looking at nothing. I am making sure the old one doesn't go to landfill ;)

  • +1

    dont worry lol

I've got an ACER Aspire 15.6" V3-572G-52HF W8.1 Notebook and want to put in the 500gb in place of my optical drive. I'm not great with this sort of thing and were wondering what I would need to get this working? I still want to keep the 1tb drive that's in there too. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

    • Yes

      • Any more info than just 'yes'? I understand I have to get a optical drive SSD caddy. Does anyone know what size to get?

  • This is going to sound stupid, but for the 500GB SSD, three questions.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/231453363206

    1. Can you use this in a desktop computer? (pictures all laptops)

    2. Does it need/come with brackets to insert into a desktop computer?

    3. What does this mean: "In three simple steps the Samsung’s One-stop Install Navigator software easily allows you to migrate all the data and applications from the existing primary storage to the 850 EVO. The Samsung Magician software also allows you to optimize and manage your system best suited for your SSD." So write now my C: drive is a 120gb SSD that's full, will the "samsung magician" make migrating all the stuff easier?

    Cheers.

      1. Yes
      2. No
      3. Yes
    • You can get the brackets to mount an SSD into the standard 3.5" HDD bay from most computer stores, at MSY they are between $3-6

  • +1

Thanks. Can't resist this. Got another 500GB one.

  • Damn, if only I had some spare dosh….great deal.

  • Why has it been marked as expired!?

    • +1

All good now. I'd put the 29th instead of 30th in the expiry field :)

      • We'll forgive you.

  • +1

Bummer wanted to buy the 1TB

    • It's not expired yet, GO FOR IT, don't walk, RUN!

  • Sigh, should I buy a 500GB SSD now, (already have a 256GB SSD, around half filled) or hope that in half a year the prices have decreased further from the new SSD tech, even with the AUD dollar falling to oblivion?

    • +1

I'd wait. Don't rush if you already have one which is only half filled.
How long have you had the 256GB for?

If you had a HDD I'd say get one now, but you're already set. Save the cash for the next bargain or go get a 1 hour massage and treat yourself to a movie.

      • I'd wait. Don't rush if you already have one which is only half filled.
How long have you had the 256GB for?

100GB left on it approx. 2 months now, it came with a UX303 ultrabook (one of few that's upgradeable, Micron M600 256GB)

If you had a HDD I'd say get one now, but you're already set.

Cool cool cool. Yeah I know the benefits, I have 2 x 256gb (one Sandisk Ultra, one Extreme [boot drive]) and used them as separate OSes [Gaming + Work]. Currently have the extreme as the boot drive and the ultra as primary storage. Never had Samsung SSDs before, I see them in 90% of the whirlpool desktop builds though, the Sandisks were just.. on special in OzB at the right time I guess

  • When are delivery expected to be made on the 500GB SSD?
Paid yesterday and it's still showing on eBay yet to be shipped?

    • I haven't check the system yet, but i'm quite sure it will be shipped out today.

  • How does the cheaper of these two NUCs compare to the BXBT-1900 from the other deal?

    • Intel NUC i3 Barebone System D34010WYKH $285 <== this is Intel Core i3 so performance is much better.

      • I realise that, but I meant in terms of the other specifications and the number/type of ports etc.

        • It's got more USB port 6 vs GB brix 3
