The new version, Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM, is way better.

  Yep. It's definitely worth considering paying the $40 more for the STM version if you plan on using this lens alot. This thing is made out of nasty plastic and the focus is loud and noisy.

    Just for clarification, "This thing" = the older EF 50mm f/1.8 II = What dinalt has posted. :)
