Amazon Prime Membership US$67 / AU$95.70 (Normally US$99/AU$141) One Day Only Sale

Friday's one-day sale to $67 is the lowest price yet for a regular subscription.

Starts at 2pm today and finishes 30 hours later, so until 8pm on Saturday.

Yes, much of the value of a membership does not apply in Australia, so you don't need to bang on about it.

Someone posted on here recently on a different deal, his experience and a list of benefits for Australians, but I can't find it.

Shipping is only good for the US, so you need a freight forwarder, a friend or travel there to benefit.
For video you need some sort of DNS to avoid the geo-block.
You can store unlimited photos.
I don't think the streaming music works.
There is some special deal for free ebooks.
There are also PC games with Amazon Prime discounts.

Technically, this special discount is only valid for new members, but if you are already signed up you can still buy a gift subscription and email it to yourself. Then you have to cancel auto-renew on your existing Prime membership and wait for it to expire, so you can then use the $67 gift code for another year of Amazon Prime.

Lastly, they have already launched Prime overseas like in the UK and Japan, so they might launch here. In the next 12 months? For US$99 or AU$99? Who knows….

Edit: If you want to have a whinge about the Aussie dollar, write to your MP instead of thread crapping. Or go live in a third world country and see people working their asses off for $10 a day.

      Just like….Turd

      • lol

    • +5

I wouldn't pay for Amazon prime membership though unless you do a heck of a lot of shipping to USA freight forwarders. Otherwise paying $140 odd for watching movies and listening to music, no thanks.

      • +3

With this promo it is $96AU (or $8 per month) for watching movies/TV and listening to music.

        • +1

My mistake. Still it's about $140 AUD normally.

      • +4

Prime isn't a bad deal for music and movies. Similar price to Netflix, plus you get music. As it has different content to Netflix, I have both and it's still way cheaper than Foxtel (if you don't need sport). Another plus for Prime is that you can download the movies / music for offline playback on Android which you can't do with Netflix.

Just got a Fire Phone mentioned below, but this is a great deal otherwise.

        • Does it have Big Bang Theory? Would really like to start watching the new season, and ideally not have to go down the torrent route.

        • @bluedufflecoat:
They do, but it's not included in Prime, so you have to pay extra:
          http://www.amazon.com/Big-Bang-Theory-Comic-Con-Panel/dp/B01…

        • @mostlygordon: noob question - I joined, have a trial membership at the moment. Can't download Amazon Video (?) on itunes, because it requires an American userid. Did you have to do that? Any idea how I can get one? Don't understand why it's so hard to "do the right thing" and not have to download tv shows illegally.

        • @bluedufflecoat:
You are actually trying to do the do the wrong thing LOL. Not only do you have to pay for content to be doing the right thing, but you need to be located in the country where the content is being sold.

Getting this to work is not trivial. Start here for an explanation: http://www.getflix.com.au/faqs#how-it-works

        • @mostlygordon: thanks. I signed up for uflix for a year.. I think it does the smart DNS thing for Netflix? But I don't know what else to do after that…

    • +2

At least we don't get out of bed for under $10.50 a day

  • +3

aussie dollar sucks massively, i now buy from the UK and not USA sometimes its cheaper.

  • +2

Lol, writing to your MP isn't going to do anything, write to the RBA to increase interest rates if you want a higher AUD. Though obviously not going to happen.

    • +10

Might as well write to Xi Jinping and ask him to buy more iron ore haha

      • +12

Getting Xi Jinping to get China to buy more Iron Ore probably wouldn't be the most efficient manner to raise AUDUSD. It's likely affect on the RBA would only trick down after Aus Iron Ore Producers employee's buy more houses (so years down the track). But while increasing housing prices would be a fair way of getting the RBA to increase rates, it's still not a guarantee it as APRA might uses its tools to slow down the market instead. Additionally this assumes that the Fed does not raise interest rates, which would in turn negate any increases by the RBA on the AUDUSD (respectively).

So really the best manner would be to create a massive housing bubble in Australia while simultaneously destroying the US economy and getting China to sell USD (possibly through its US debt holdings). But don't do it too much as then you would risk the USD losing its status as the pseudo universal currency and of course you would now need to get China to buy Fe as AUDUSD rises so do the Aus Fe producers profits dwindle (unless you tell them before hand and they but lots of forwards/futures, but then these could even these contracts could default in such an economy (despite clearing house guarantees) and then cause insurers to collapse would likely create a GFC II (assuming it hadn't happened already by this stage).

Maybe if you explain this plan to Jeff Bezos he'll just give you lots of Amazon Credits so you won't take off on this audacious plan? But then you'd need to neg this deal, due to free > US$99 memberships.

My head hurts after reading this

        • Suppose these are your goals:

          1) Housing bubble to crash (massive drop in house prices)
          2) With new affordable houses in the market, first dibs go to Australian-born first home buyers, Australian-born buyers looking to buy a house to live in, foreign-born buyers looking to buy a house to live in. Once every person who wants a house to live in is living in one, the rest of the crumbs go to local investors and foreign investors
          3) Raise value of AUD
          4) Lower value of USD
          5) Increase ING Saving Maximiser rates to like, 10%

How would you do all this simultaneously?

  • +1

Does this get you the unlimited cloud storage?

    • +1

I tried the unlimited cloud (for photos at $13usd a year) by itself and apparently that wasn't available to Australia :( would be interested to find out if this one includes it.

  • Yep, i tried that yesterday and was a bit disappointed its unavailable, so if this one includes it then im in.

  • +1

If anyone is interested, you can also get a discontinued Amazon Fire Phone and 1 year Prime included from here…

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171943393248?rmvSB=true <-32GB Version (about $205 AUD including shipping)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/191668149634?rmvSB=true <-64GB Version (about $250 AUD including shipping)

There's been a few breakthroughs getting Android going on these, but it's probably not suitable for the non-tech savvy crowd…

    • have you bought 1? how's this compare to nexus 5?

      • Haven't got one, already have enough phones I'm playing with at the moment, haha.

      • I've bought one, it's almost identical build to a nexus 4, but a bit heavier. It's a bargain at an effective cost of ~$100 with prime subtracted.

Edit: I see the eBay is even cheaper than the $159 usd I paid. Thus about ~$75 for the phone.

        • nexus 4 or nexus 5?
          cheers?

        • +1

          @cuek: Nexus 4. I haven't owned a nexus 5. The Fire Phone is also
Much faster than my nexus 4 ever was.

It's still a touch short on RAM to be a high end phone, but it's definitely midrange for 1/3rd of the cost of nexus and non Chinese brand devices.

        • @Lukian: The spec looks more or less like Nexus 5 though. Snapdragon 800, 2GB RAM… The biggest difference would be fire phone has HD screen and Fire OS.

        • @Oversimplified: Fire OS isn't an issue, it just means you are slightly out of date with the main android builds (which may actually be a good thing as Amazon have likely tweaked it for performance keyed specifically to the phone hardware). You can easily use any launcher and install a fully functional Play Store.

        • @Lukian: I said the difference, not a problem. Though, I think you can get CM on it (I think 12.1 was still under test, but older version was usable in real life IIRC from what I've read).

        • @Oversimplified: CM11 is functional, although Snapchat (and some other camera apps) dislike how many cameras the device has ;)

Community ROM releases end up being time consuming anyway, Fire OS is quite fast and stable, I see no need to switch to a 4.4.x (or newer) CM build.

        • @Lukian: Ahhh, so it panicks with the camera :P

I frankly dislike the idea of custom ROMs unless the phone has a "horrendously" modified Android.
My definition of horrendously modified usually lies with stability and how heavy it feels (usually how heavy it feels is more of "is it usable with the stock firm?").

I've read some people wanting to use CM on Fire Phone (I've never used Fire OS before, so I am not sure whether it is good or not), that's why I've mentioned CM and that's why I've mentioned CM is available.

        • @Oversimplified: Fire OS seems to just replace/reskin Notification Bar & Settings & Redirect app store links to the Amazon AppStore*, aside from that it's basically a stock android release afaict. Also double-tapping the physical 'home' button is a task switcher, like iPhone, fantastic functionality - this works from any Launcher too.

*Can be fixed by disabling the Amazon AppStore, but losing some amazon functionality as a result -or- just living with that fact that app links on the rare times they are used, will never go to the Play Store as you expect as a previous android user.

  • Is there a link to the gift membership?

  • +1

love my fire phones. in particular if you are into the amazon prime movies ecosystem - offline viewing makes it amazing if you have kids.

you can use the Google Now launcher if you want the familiar look-and-feel of vanilla android.

+1 for calling out "Thread Crapping".
    Good deal, thanks OP

So works out to be $8/month for video and music as opposed to Netflix. How is the content like compared to Netflix? Also is music geoblocked as well or just video?

    • +2

I have both and use Netflix more. But, Prime has different content; I am binge watching Extant on it ATM. Music is geoblocked, and it's strange. I have a Fire HD 7 tablet that music doesn't work on but video does, both work fine on my SG6. Same router and Getflix DNS settings, go figure… The big plus is that you can download Prime content for offline viewing / listening which you can't do (easily) for Netflix.

      • I wasn't aware of the offline content option, that's great for travelling! (Especially with Fire tablets?)

        • I use the Amazon Echo for Music and it is fautless! I love it!

      • From https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=…
"You must have an Amazon.com account, a U.S. billing address, and a payment method issued by a U.S. bank to access Prime Music."

Maybe you need to setup a US billing address. Not sure about the US credit card - 28 Deg CC sometimes gets passed this requirement. Not sure.

        • Well, I spent a lot of my time in a Starbucks in LA ;-) My Citibank VISA seems to work fine…

        • @mostlygordon:
Does your Citibank Visa belongs to Citibank Australia or US?

        • @Joe888:
It's Australian. I got a similar deal to this last year. But I gifted myself the subscription as I had a trail account. Not sure if this worked around the Oz card issue, or if mine just works…

Anyway, I get another year included with my soon to be delivered Fire Phone, so all good for a while :)

  • I actually found that some of the stuff is still cheaper in Amazon US even after the currency rate plummeted.

That said, if you want to take full advantage of this, you'd probably need to look for a decent ship forwarder.
Things like t-fal (tefal in America) and WMF I've seen are so much cheaper in US when they are on sale (and you get free shipping for prime users within America usually for those).

Hi All - this is the promo page for $67

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/prime/pipeline/prime_gifting_landi…

"The figure is in reference to Amazon’s five Emmy wins at this year’s 67th PrimeTime Emmy Awards, the company says – and this is its way of celebrating."

Amazon Prime is AMAZING!!! I love it love it love it!!

I have the Fire TV Box with voice remote

    The Fire TV Stick

and I also have ALEXA , that is the Amazon ECHO and I love it!!

I have a USA address so I also save a pretty penny on postage too!

The MUSIC is the best saving in my opinion , I may NEVER ever go back to itunes or apple tv devices.

    • New to prime, how do you play all the content in australia?

      • +2

I use smarty dns - dot com . Its an unlocking service and you can get a free 14 day trial with them so you can try it out. They are really easy and have lots of guides to help you step by step. There are lots of other VPN services out there , some free but I am happy with this one, really easy.

  • +1

Worth it if you plan travelling to the US - We did the 30 day free trial and it worked magic. Shipped to Amazon Lock boxes. Amazing.

  • "..Or go live in a third world country and see people working their asses off for $10 a day."??? WTF? Gina will be pissed off, that's like 500% more then her African workers. Bloody unions!

How does the free ebook stuff work (do you need to appear to reside in the US)? If you use a smart DNS will it work?
IMHO that'd be worth it alone.

  • If i sign up to Amazon prime US will this work for Amazon UK? Will i still be able to get free next day delivery etc?

    • Different services, have to signup separately to each if you want both for some reason .. At least as far as I know you do.

      • Thanks mate, currently living in the UK and was looking for a cheaper alternative to get prime.

Music streaming works and being able to save video and audio is great. HBO contents is great. In a way, this is better than Netflix. Cheers~

    • +1

Did you pay by a US credit card?

      • Ok here's what I did

        1) in Amazon set my default address to a US one (not sure if this is required)
        2) Bought my Prime subs on 28deg card
        3) Used a VPN to appear to be in the US
        4) Signed into Amazon app store using my Amazon US a/c
        5) downloaded the Amazon Music app

When I launched the AmazonMusic app it said I need to sign into Amazon Music Could via a browser to finish signing up & check that I am in the US.

        6) Opened Firefox, used a Private browsing tab,
        7) When to https://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/cloudplayer/player?ie=UTF8&Version=1&entries=0#stations
        8) In FF settings ticked "Request Desktop Site"
        9) Refreshed browser
        10) loogged in using Amazon US a/c (I was welcomed)
        11) Opened AmazonMusic app - signed out & in

waalaa I now have music streaming

I have a DNS service (dns4me.net) so it works perfectly without the VPN connected.

        • Thanks for tips. Music streaming asked me for a US credit card when I was on a trial membership. They could have changed it since.

  • I dare say this is worth it just for the new 'Top Gear' (or whatever it will be called) series coming soon…

  • +1

I cant get the gifting options to work either. Just keeps putting it into my cart at $99.

    • it goes into the cart @99, then at the checkout it shows up with the discount (weird I know)

    • Discount does not apply to the gifting of prime. It says on the webpage.

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/prime/pipeline/prime_gifting_landing?ie=UTF8&Version=1&entries=0

      • Yeah, thats what i found in the end. Not sure how superbudda is getting it to work.

  • Why would you choose this when there's Netflix?

  • +1

Amazon Prime (One Year Membership) is not available for you to purchase because you are a Prime member.

    Way to reward existing customers.

Was hoping I could stack it like pretty much all other memberships,

  • I have getflix. Can't get it to work on my note 4 on lollipop. Work on mu samsung note 8 on kitkat. Already donwload the latest amazon store app and install the latest
amazon video and amazon prime music. Looks like it knows it is in australia even with getflix. Doesn't work for android lollipop. Anyone get it working for android lollipop ?

    • yep see my post above. got it working on my Sammy toys (Gteflix has a VPN option too doesn't it?)
