It seems like Harvey Norman are clearing genuine Apple iPad Air smart covers and cases. I went to HN Hoppers Crossing and there were heaps. Bought Cover (Yellow) for just $9. They also have iPAD air case for $19 in variety of color. Possibly other stores may have clearance as well.
Several Reddit users have chimed in providing their experiences with mixed results. Overall, it seems that basic iPad Air cases will fit the iPad Air 2 just fine, while more advanced iPad Air cases that are meant to fit the tablet more firmly won’t work with the newer iPad Air 2.
While you might think that both tablets are the exact same size, the iPad Air 2 is actually just slightly slimmer than the iPad Air, but other than, they’re essentially the same. However, that difference in thickness can drastically change how the newer tablet fits in older cases.

By my experience buy one made for iPad Air 2 ( I have one) for peace of mind. I got mine when they first came out. They are different in size, so it may slip out. Bought a perfectly good cover at the markets for $15. Be careful, try it with the Ipad in it first I suggest.
The iPad Air Smart Cover, which this one is, works fine with the iPad Air 2.
The iPad Air cases you'd need to be more careful. Not only is the iPad Air 2 slimmer, the side buttons are located differently, and so is the rear camera. If the case has a round cutout for the camera, most likely it'll only fit one or the other. Some cases have a larger opening to allow for different camera locations and is more likely to fit either.
