i bought this at Jb last week Lol, got it for $1400, FANTASTIC laptop though..

    • glad to see you're taking it so well…must be really happy with the laptop.

    I bought this laptop few months back for $1500;
This seems to be a good price.

Here is what you should be mindful of though:

    1) ATI HD 4650 Radeon may not be as fast as "1GB Graphics" makes it sound (Read somewhere online; haven't personally tried to play any games though).

    2) Windows 7 runs smoothly without a problem.

    3) This one is subject to your own preference but i really find the metallic glossy touch pad annoying, simple plastic touch pads are a much better experience in my opinion.

    4) Please also note that the vertical resolution is only 768px
I personally feel its a bit less for when you need to work on the computer. But again most of the new 15.6" laptops have similar resolution; again depends upon what your needs are.

    • Totally Agree with the touchpad thing, metallic silver may look nice in a picture or showroom, but it gets incredibly dirty/scratch incredibly fast. The Graphics card will hold its own though, i use it to play Modern Warfare 2 on High setting no problems at all.
      Edit : MW2 not 1

  • Quite a high end lappy - very good for the price. You can get the i7 version for ~$1500 nowadays but this is still great value.

The ATi HD4650 is quite a good card http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark…

      Agree it's good value,

i'm using the i7 version (dv6-2005tx) got it for $1400 off ebay a month back.

i'm not sure whether its due to my quad core, but battery life is only 1.5 hours on balanced plan, but with Hyper Threading, 8 cores is just awesome in rendering apps, the vents gets really hot tho.

Mind that the i7 comes with Nvidia Gt230M and got 12,000+ on 3Dmark05 (which is different from the link above)

Other than that, HDMI & audio works like a charm (with last week's premium cable from COTD)

there's two 3.5mm headphone jacks for you and a mate or ext speakers.

      one more thing:
i think COTD should be part of the 'participating' reseller for the Step OUT bonus (backpack and wireless mouse add$18 shipping)

I am not buying another HP. The Nvidia graphics chip on my HP notebook failed after a couple of years. It was a big problem in the US and other countries. At least HP US had a replacement program for the chip - but not Australia.
I note that this notebook has a ATI graphics card and not Nvidia. But I prefer to buy a Toshiba notebook.

    • My work HP 8710p is great and the Nvidia Quadro NVS 320M in it hasn't failed.

Everyone has different experiences with different manufacturers I guess.

Funnily enough most manufacters had problems with graphics cards for a time especially the replacable boards. Toshiba HP Dell some still have issues

Similar to when we had the capacitor problem affected all pc makers just how they handled the known issue is the difference

Also hardware does not fail at the same time it will fail depending on usage ie the more you use it the less life t wll have as a general rule or at least this is what i found when working for IBM & Toshiba

Personally i do not like HP and would never use one by choice, i have had them for work and we use them for training courses approx 100 at a time couple of times a year and they work well overall, my gripes are i think they are ugly and the support is terrible again from my experience as per Stix everyone has a different experience

      • Gees that capacitor problem was annoying. Oh, the PC is blue screening? (Check caps) Yep, they're leaking.

Yep, my HP suffered the same issue.

Luckily I had purchased the laptop on a credit card that offered extened warranty insurance. In the end, the paid me out.

Now I tend to stick with ASUS.

I too had the issue with an HP and Nvidia card making the pc unusable. I make it my job to give them as much bad press as possible.

      Buy another brand!

Just as a warning, while CoTD have some cheap items, their after sales service is non-existent … and going by what the previous poster said about HP Australia, i'd be cautious …

I've purchased a few items from CoTD and two items were not as described:
    - a pair of shoes, to be cautious i orded it two (Euro) sizes larger than other Euro sized shoes I have, still couldn't get my feet inside them (Australian size 11, ordered Euro size 47) … when i asked them about it, their response was "some of our customers have had great success reselling them on ebay".
    - their USB / DivX / DVD player, which doesn't read usb sticks, usb hard drives, divx's from dvd disks. I tried with two flash sticks, three usb hard drives (3.5" formatted fat32, 2.5" formatted NTFS, 2.5 formatted fat32) and a combination of a dozen or so DVD's and CD's with DivX's … my complaints were ignored …

    • Sucks that you've had problems with your orders, but I returned a faulty Philips Bluetooth headset to them and had no problem at all. Told them the issue, they said send it back (paid for return shipping) and since they had no replacements they gave me full store credit (including original shipping). So I was pretty happy with that!

      • The law states that if you returned it and it was faulty they need to offer you a refund - not just store credit (see http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/268478) - hope they offered you that coz that's the law (though you can choose store credit if you want, but they need to give you a full refund if that's what you choose).

    • … "when i asked them about it, their response was “some of our customers have had great success reselling them on ebay”."…

Yes, I've had that standard response also. Not what I'd like to hear on an expensive item though.

  • A somewhat questionable survey but HP is apparently the least reliable laptop brand.

    http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/2009/11/17/notebook-reliabi…

  • yes, they offered to refund my money, but as the shoes were 60$ + 20$ postage, another 20$ postage to send it back to get a refund of 60$ would have meant i got 20$ back … so i gave them to a neighbour … as a side note, the shoes were quite nice, just not the size listed …

  • ahhhh when new things come out the old ones drop like crazy
