Deals on larger screen phones/phablets?

Hi everyone,

Anyone know of some deals on larger screen phones? I am looking for one for my mum ~ 70yo to use as part tablet part phone up to $500.

Just regular internet browsing, facebook ect. She has a basic model windows phone at the moment and a pretty crappy aldo tablet.

Galaxy note 3 for $499 looks decent i guess. A zen phone 2?

Can anyone suggest other alternatives that may be worth look into? (buying outright, using on TPG)

Thanks for any ideas.

  • xperia z ultra for $330 second hand mint from ebay

    • THanks, she would prefer new though.

  • The 7" Fonepad could be an option… $145

    • Hadn't seen that. Thanks.

Specs are probably a little on the low side though, rather not have to upgrade it again too soon. The huge bezel takes it a bit too far on the tablet sizing rather than phone use.

  • Grab an Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 from JD.com for $139.99USD inc shipping (after applying JD999 coupon) - 5.5" screen and more than enough power for your grandma to use as a phone/tablet.

  • +1 for Xiaomi notes

Viewsonic V500 is also another option but the lack of UMTS 850mhz network bands are the only big cons with the phone. Does have 4G though.

    • Didn't realise it had 900mhz 3G support, makes it a good phone for Optus at least. Bargain for the money too (although it'll likely never get Android Lollipop and I'd discount it for that alone - better off with the Lenovo K3 Note or Xiaomi Redmi Note 2)

      • I hadn't seen the k3 before. Looks decent.

        Seen any deals on it?

Plenty of K3 Note deals posted on OzBargain. You are better off with the Xiaomi.

        • @xyron:

I am just going to tell her to get the Nexus 6 and will grab a Xiaomi for myself. She will want something that "just works" and is supported without fiddling around. The Xiaomi looks like a good upgrade from my y550 though.

          Thanks for the help.

Surely a Note 3 with its stylus is a better, more usable tablet for an oldie?

        • @scubacoles:

That was my first thought. Same price as the nexus 6 though which seems to have better specs. The 6 front mounted speakers for better sound for older ears, wireless charging would make life easier as well.

Is the in built stylus that much better than getting an aftermarket one if she wants to use a stylus?

Been looking at phone for soo long i think i am going crazy.

        • @Duff5000:
The Note Stylus is Waaaaaay better than any aftermarket capacitive stylus.
The Note uses WACOM technology for its stylus, not just a Pen that emulates a finger. You should watch some videos or have a play in store.

        • @scubacoles: Arg. why is choosing phones so hard!

i haven't found a note 3 in store, they are pretty much discontinued. The nexus 6 is a direct competitor to the note 4 isn't it? Seems a waste to spend the same $$ on lower end hardware in the note 3. If i could find the note 3 for $299 like someone said iinet had the other day it would be an easy choice.

        • @Duff5000:
I'm pretty sure any of the Note series use the same stylus technology.
I wouldn't be worried about hardware, we've pretty much reached the point where improving the speed of hardware is barely noticeable in real world use.
My 2012 model LG Optimus G still does everything a current day model handset can do, except it takes 0.1 seconds to do something instead of 0.05 seconds.

        • @scubacoles:

Just read that the note 3 isn't getting the marshmallow update, only the note 4 and above.

        • @Duff5000:

Once again, I'm pretty sure your Granny wont care.
You should be concerned with usability and nothing more, cause that's all she'll care about.

  • If shes 70 yoa I would think screen real estate and simplicity would be more important than having a phablet.

    • Isnt a phone with screen real estate a phablet by definition though? Open to suggestions to alternatives. I thought the nexus 6 might be a good idea given it is a vanilla android 5 experience without a million other aps preinstalled.

She has a basic windows phone. They do make a XL windows phone which would be similar to what she has but it didn't seem to be good value.

      • Yeah I would recommend a lumia 640xl. Brilliant phone and windows phone is actually easy to navigate

  • You miss my point
Most 70 year olds will have failing eyesight so a larger device would be more appealing.
My mother wont use a smart phone at all because the screen is to small, she dislikes my 7 inch tablet for the same reason but she has no issue with an 8 inch one.

    • She is using a small screen Windows smart phone at the moment. 8 inch and she wouldn't take it with her i would expect. I might have to find one in a shop for her to try.
