iPod Touch 5th Gen or Sale Price 6th Gen

Need an Ipod Touch before November. 5th Gen is fine or sale priced 6th Gen.

Officeworks were showing 5th Generation models at a few stores but the 3rd store I rang advised me there are none in Victoria.

After some suggestions on where I should try next. I'm currently looking on ebay but to be honest I hate the idea of buying a second hand model - would prefer new.

  • Get the 6th gen, there's about 3 years between it and the 5th gen.

    • Any suggestions on where to buy it for a good price?

  • Depending on where you are at the moment look at the following OB deal

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/211344

Yes I know it is for a 5 not a 6 but it is also $80-90 cheaper than a 6 too…. and if they say they cant do cheaper orffer cash, it breaches their own policy if they say no ;)

    • Thanks. Unfortunately can't get to Chadstone.

  • I am happy to get a 5th gen ipod if the price is good. The officeworks 5G ipods would have been great as they were quite a lot cheaper.

  • At the moment the Apple Store seems to be within ~$5 of the cheapest prices (and has free shipping) for the 6th gen. I'd get it there, 16GB for $279.

  • What's the reason you want an iPod touch? I think if you are going for a general iOS device, 6th gen would fit your bill far better than 5th gen.

iPhone 4s (A5, 512MB RAM) vs iPhone 6 (A8, 1GB RAM), that's the difference in spec between iPod Touch 5th gen and 6th gen (well technically speaking, underclocked A8).

    • It's actually for my 12 year old autistic son. He currently has a 4th Gen which he uses constantly but apparently there is a lot he can't do with it because it can't be updated to ios8 - plus it's so old now it runs out quickly and needs charging constantly. I'm taking him to Thailand in November so wanted to get him a new ipod to use on the plane and while there.

The reason I had originally picked 5th gen was because of the price at officeworks. It was $249 for 64gb. Also he's not rough with his current ipod but I couldn't justify paying so much for the 6th gen.

      • +1

I'd recommend iPad Mini 4 when it comes out (or even iPad Mini 2) or iPod Touch 6th gen over 5th Gen one.
Sorry, iPad Mini 4 recommendation was slightly due to me wanting one :P

If you get iPod Touch 5th gen one, you'd soon face the problems with not being able to update to the latest OS.
I think it supports 9, but I don't think will be supported after that. iPod Touch 6th gen will be supported at least for far longer.

As others have said, there is a 3 years gap between 5th gen and 6th gen.

Anyways, good luck with your search :)

        • I would +1 on the iPad mini2. I have one of these and it is my "go to" machine. It fits nicely in a bum bag and the graphics are great. Apple still sell them as a current level machine. I would try to get something higher than 16 Gb; I keep running out of room on my 64 Gb. You could have a look at the refurbs on the Apple site. Hope you find what you want.

        • @try2bhelpful: I've heard good things about iPad Mini 4 (improvements on the screen quality, 2GB RAM, etc). It is one of the few iOS devices that made me feel, maybe I should seriously get one. I do admit that iPad Mini 2 when 3 came out did something similar, but not as much as iPad Mini 4.

        • @Oversimplified: If money isn't an issue then I would certainly go the iPad Mini4; the step up is certainly better than the mini3. (Although I haven't seen the 2 Gb RAM confirmed anywhere - do you have a link?). The iPad mini2 is a good bang for buck machine and mine is still going strong after 2 years.

        • @try2bhelpful: It was mentioned several times in benchmarks and such.

        • @Oversimplified: Thanks. Seriously considering the upgrade here and passing my mini2 to the man. However, I think I will hang in and see if October brings a more impressive iPad Air.

        • @try2bhelpful: I somehow doubt it, A9X would cannibalise sales on iPad Pro (Well it might not, but I'd assume so). A9 would be not too different from A8X. Apple wouldn't increase the RAM on iPad Air (same reason/they rarely do it). I frankly think iPad Air 2 as is fairly decent.

        • @Oversimplified: The advantage of the iPad mini2 is I'm not in a huge hurry to replace, particularly given the state of the Pacific peso that is our dollar at the moment.

        • @try2bhelpful: True, iPad Mini 2 is very far from being outdated at the moment. Two thing that stopped me from buying it was iTunes and the fact that I think it's a toy, a device purely for consumption of media. ARM devices in general I feel is not productive to warrant me spending much money on it.

iPad Mini 4 is attracting me with less chance of being outdated in awhile (2GB RAM) and possibly better screen (makes a better toy for reading stuff on).

The reason why I've mentioned iPad Air 2 wouldn't get rehashed any time soon is this. A8X is built with tablet in mind, it demands more battery and as a result it's very powerful. I've even heard some people suggesting that A9 might be a rehashed version of A8X with better finFET (smaller the finFET, the more power efficient the chip is, usually), though that's some people's assumption. I doubt Apple would've used Triple Core on iPhone line yet. So yeah, I think A8X wouldn't be far off from A9.

Sorry about digressing a little. iPad Mini seeris (and to less extent iPads) were on my "Apple products I might get list" for awhile, so that gets me slightly rant-y.

        • @Oversimplified: I don't have an issue with a "media consumption" device, it is exactly what you buy them for. I do my "Age" cryptic crosswords, I read the newspaper, I read books, I play games, I surf the web, etc. I have a PC which I use for "productivity". The other thing to keep in mind is that the 16 Gb iPad mini2 costs $348 from Office Works, the 16 Gb iPad mini4 costs $569. For something that is going to a child it is probably worth saving the money.

        • @try2bhelpful: I don't have issues with media consumption devices, it's just I put the media consumption devices near to the end of the list. I was not suggesting it's bad, if that was the gist I was giving out. It's more of my personal preferences on how to spend money (If I thought it was "useless", I wouldn't be following it).

  • Thanks everyone for the replies. We have an ipad mini and my son does use that but we want another ipod touch because it is a bit more portable - he carries it everywhere.

What I really just need to know is where I can pick one up for a good price. Everywhere I have looked seems to have the same price.

  • If anyone has stumbled upon a great deal for an iPod touch (6th gen, 16gb, grey) would you please let me know? Buying for the bf as a Christmas gift but okay with getting it now

  • +1
