Boost Mobile getting 4G!

This might even count as a bargain..

Ausdroid just posted that Boost mobile are getting access to the Telstra 4g network from Sep 29.
http://ausdroid.net/2015/09/16/boost-mobile-goes-4g-on-the-t…

This makes it $40 per 30 days for unlimited calls/sms plus 3gb data on Telstra's 4g network, prepaid. Surely that's the best deal on the Telstra network?

    Interesting.

Maybe that's why Woolworths Connect moved from Optus to Telstra as well, knowing that they might eventually be able to get 4G access? Or maybe it would tempt Amaysim to move over (or be able to re-negotiate a deal with Optus)?

    • Boost was always good because it had the full 3g network, but maybe Woolworths did too?

And I'm just assuming it's access to the full 4g network now.

  • very good but:
    1. i wish they have like $30 for 2GB data with not unlimited calls is fine.
    2. option to slow down Internet or to stop when reach quota, instead charging extra.

option to slow down Internet or to stop when reach quota, instead charging extra.

Boost is prepaid, once you've used your data it does stop working until you recharge again.

      • Would incoming calls still work??..

        • Of course, as with any other pre-paid provider. You get a certain grace period after your recharge expires where incoming calls/SMS will still work. Most providers seem to then cut you off and you lose your number after 6 months of no recharge. Some are longer than that but you would need to query it.

    • You can recharge $20 for 1GB with 100 minutes of calls and unlimited texts, then if you need it you can get an addon for $10 that gives you an extra 1GB.

  • With the addition of 4G,is there any difference between the coverage from boost and telstra directly?

    • Turns out there is, just read the fine print and it seems to top out at 50Mbps, and 'not full 4GX speeds'.

Still an awesome deal, especially if you don't have a 4GX phone.

      • "Boost customers will access 4G on the Telstra Mobile network which uses the 1800MHz and 700MHz bands, depending on device capability and location"

I think that 4GX runs on the new 700MHz band (freed up when analogue tv was switched off)? In which case it sounds like it may be available if you are in a suitable area with a handset that supports it. Maybe because a lot of people won't meet both those criteria they said "typical 4G download speeds of 2Mbps – 50Mbps" to avoid the calls from people saying 'but you said I'd be able to get 100Mbps….' with their old iPhone 3G. Like the people who called up when colour TV came out, and complained that their (black and white) tvs were still showing black and white. Seriously.

Ah. Just read the finer print. "Boost offers 3G and 4G services, with typical download speeds of 2-50Mbps for 4G devices in 4G areas (not full 4GX data speeds) and 3G speeds in other coverage areas." Hmmm……. not sure how they'll restrict speeds on the 4GX network…. will have to wait and see.

          @PlasticSpaceman:

It's not the 4GX network it's plain 4G that Boost will be using. 4GX is a different network.

"4GX" is marketing wank, just like "NextG".

        • @matt6589: @hollykryten:
Actually you both are correct, not sure who negged you.
4GX is Telstra's marketing name for their 700MHz LTE, which is a different network to their 1800MHz LTE (4G). Both are standard 4G FDD-LTE networks just on different frequencies, and the phones need to support the frequencies to access 4G. If you are with Telstra directly and has a phone that supports both 1800 and 700 then you are accessing their full 4G network.
My guess here is that Boost will be getting 1800MHz, and not 700MHz.

        • @PlasticSpaceman: Would most likely be with the APN settings (Optus does this for resellers).

Check to see if the APN is the same for Boost and Telstra.

Good news is that all current Boost SIM cards do not need to replaced they will automatically function as 4G on September 29th. So if you're not already a customer there's nothing stopping you from buying a Boost SIM starter pack now and using it in 3G mode until then.

  • Apparently you now get an extra 1gb of data to use on Sundays (from the new dealed dup)
    Here's the Boo9st blurb on 4G
    http://boost.com.au/4G-faster-data-boost-pre-paid-mobile.asp…

  • Was definitely happy to get the sms from Boost today saying this was happening. 3G speed has usually been fine, but every now and then a little more speed would be nice. Only thing now I'd wish they'd do is provide a proper tax receipt. At the moment I need to go into the likes of Dick Smith to get a voucher, whilst it would be a lot nicer if I could set it to auto renew and just have a receipt emailed to me…….

  • Only 12 more $19 recharges on amaysim before even being able to consider returning to Boost… Oh Boost how I miss you so.

    • If you miss it then i can buy your amaysim vouchers and you can jump on boost. :D

Personally I don't know how a deal for 4g on telstra boost was considered a dupe of 3G on telstra boost. But someone reported it and the mod obliged. So now people have to come to forums to find out about this deal for 4g on boost

    • I guess technically it's not a deal, in that this is their normal price with improved service. Still good news though. :-)

      • +1

It was unpublished with reason dupe. Normal price get kept as deals if lots of upvotes, which this deal was getting

Does anyone know if you can call conference up to 5 other numbers on Boost as you can with Telstra Prepaid?

I've always found boost 3G to be inferior to Telstra's 3g. I moved from Telstra to Boost.

    • It's the exact same network, billing system and even support, just a different brand.

      • I'd like to thank that too, but in reality it seems like boot customers are somehow throttled or on a lower priority.

  • there was a post on whirlpool somewhere confirming a call to Boost customer service.
    they picked up saying,
    "Hi Welcome to Telstra…"

I think they use the same call centre.

Although Telstra doesn't confirm, Boost and Telstra are linked closely.

Thus, I have been sucessful with a 4G hack with Boost (20months strong).
I have been on Boost using a 4G simcard from the Telstra store.

"I lost my phone, please help!!"

I wonder if my Telstra sim on Boost is different to an original boost sim when Sept29th comes.

I'll activate a boost pack and try keep you posted here.

So… i went to Woolies with my Egift card from Cashrewards.
Purchased 2 x $50 JBhifi gift cards for $95 cost to me.
    Have 2 fuel vouchers now.
And used them to buy 5x $40starter packs from JB

  • Seems like mostly discounts vs starter kits separates these debranded O/AmaySim, T/Boost, V/Lebara) while that lepara is looking pretty dated. Well played Telstra.

  • Boost is owned by Telstra, I've asked Telstra staff this point, if you are a Boost customer, walk into a Telstra store and you will find your Boost mobile number in Telstra system as a Telstra prepaid service, my understanding once Boost is active on Telstra 4G network will have access to 700mhz and 2600mhz 4GX frequencies and 4G 1800 but limited to 4G speeds (no 4GX), I have tested both Telstra and Boost sims on Telstra 4G and speeds are almost identical actually found Boost slightly faster though haven't as yet had the pleasure to test Telstra 4GX either with Telstra or I know shouldn't work Boost sims, my 2 cents :)

    • Boost is owned by Telstra

Before that has been officially confirmed they're still two separate companies. People just keep assuming they are the same company.

      • Yeah, it's just a partnership; nothing more.

I'm on boost and it looks like I'm already getting 4G before the date said!

    • They're probably testing it before the official release date.

    • Yep, mine started on the 23rd. Happy days.

  • +1

Just like eagleanthony above, I too am now on 4G with Boost :)

  • I'm trying to compare the $20 of this with the old $20 plan I have with telechoice.

Anyone know if you pay for Voicemail diversion or Voicemail to text conversion? What about flagfall?
100 minutes a month is actually … doable for me (but it's tight)

When you run out of credit, would incoming calls still work? - How long would it take to recharge?
I don't like the 30 day thing. It's pedantic but you know, some months have 31 days..

    • Voicemail to text conversion? is free same as Telstra, Voicemail diversion not available I think like Telstra

Voicemail retrieval comes out of your credit

When you run out of credit, would incoming calls still work? Yes (you need to recharge by 6 months or sim itself will die but best double check that, I've gone 2 months without recharging (also I've topped up $10 pack instead of renewing $20 but I cant remember if I did it after main $20 credit expired and it still gave me $10 data and voice)

How long would it take to recharge? Instant pretty much same as Telstra options dial #111# (telstra #100#) to recharge

As I posted above I believe Boost is Telstra as all the features you get with Telstra, Boost has (Almost except for CredME2U)
Unmetered data for AFL, Mobile Foxtel apps etc, telstra caller tones, Telstra Voicemail to text conversion to name a few

100 minutes a month is actually … doable for me (but it's tight)
If Boost $20 plan had more minutes would be ideal but if your not a heavy caller then its perfect plan, certainly great for teenagers, even the $40 plan overall is great avoiding post paid Bill shock, Telstra has given better value for there prepaid plans reckon Boost will follow in time well now Boost is 4G and now there Sunday data bonus is now for the whole weekend as example

      • voice to text is free? never used to be with Telstra, when did it become free as I still pay and looking on Telstra it says…

        Low
        < 12 messages Monthly Access Fee $5
        Medium
        13 - 37 messages Monthly Access Fee $10
        High

38 message Monthly Access Fee $15

        • replied below :D

        • @Italkdigital:
maybe there is a couple of versions. one that you leave a quick ten second message (eg Hi its freddy call me 123789) and it goes as a txt, but the one I use and need people can leave however long a message they like and its a txt.

  • You sure I've only used it on Boost, well the $40 plan, thought the whole point of converting a Voice message to TXT was so you didn't have to retrieve a Voice message and don't have to retrieve there is no cost,

haven't as yet used a Telstra Prepaid plan just Data plan, will be switching to Telstra Freedom plus plan

can anyone else confirm Telstras voice to text is free or not? on prepaid or post paid

    cheers

  • Had a look at transcriber Google voice which goes with online everywhere, and even alongside freedom+cap here etc

Slightly less reliable for a robot-powered engine, but then neither limited that you can see for length & number of converted messages allowed. Voice record sent for free +played/kept in email of transcribed searchable text the way this should be*someday.
