Woolworths Frozen Italian Meals - Now $2; Was $8 (All States)

610

Walked down my local woolworths and found these on sale (Fairfield Waters, Townsville) and asked a friend in Melbourne to look at their Safeway, and Safeway had it discounted too, so I at least know it is QLD and VIC.

These meals are excellent for $2, I've stocked up about 50 of them for the next uni year :) Had a taste of each of the four different flavours, and Gnocchi is definitely my favourite. The Penne one isn't very nice, but if you're into that flavour go for it!

mod - reworded title a little, to make it clearer that the $2 is the price; $2 is not the discount :)

They've been on for a while, been buying them too. For $2 they make a nice meal. Didn't think of posting it (just getting started here)

I work for Safeway and at my store there is not much stock left.. just the eggplant one. Might be the last day today, although they have been extending it for quite a few times every time the special was meant to come off.

  • I don't know why I havn't already posted this.

Unless you like egg plant or mushrooms, the best one to get is either the penne or the gnocchi style packet.

I cleaned out their penne last time I was there since its got a nice chilli taste to it.

They are very easy to cook, you pour it in frozen into a pot and stir for 6 minutes or you can microwave it, it tastes very similar to if you made it fresh.

    • Don't know how you make your pastas but it definitely doesn't taste anything like sauce made from scratch, I have tried the fungus and arrabiata one and the fungus is just a tad better. They are still great for a cheap and quick dinner though, the portion size is enough for a male :)

    • I like the penne too. It's the only spicy one.

It's been on sale at my Woolworths for 3 weeks. All well worth the $2 or even double that. Wasn't aware that it was nationwide though

      The flavours are:
      eggplant spaghetti (surprisingly good)
      Spicy Penne (I like hot:))
      Gnocchi (not my favourite)
      mushroom Tagleietta (excellent!!)
      musrhoom risotto (bland)

  • Bought a heap myself earlier in the week, good value. The Gnocchi is definitely the best, Penne isn't bad if you add some frozen cheese for flavour. Best thing about these are the serving sizes which are quite generous for what you pay (450 grams+). Definitely stock up on these if you're a student.

  • bought some myself last week didnt think of post it either

  • These are from page 15 of the current catalogue (part of a $2 promo on a number of products)…..

    http://woolworths5.smedia.com.au/olive/ode/WeeklySpecials/?h…

I gather the sale ends today.

The $2 mini cheesecakes are also good.

    • Also, part of VIC's weekly promotion.

Wow. This is a good deal. Cheaper than a meal at Maccas.

  • I had to laugh at:

I’ve stocked up about 50 of them for the next uni year :)

    • Haha gotta do what you gotta do ;) Might grab a few more actually..

Awesome guy ; Stocking that much up !!

(not as bad as stocking up toilet paper - asian parents)

      • +4

I got worse then that, my mates parents take public toilets paper so they dont have to buy their own…cheapst thing (and lowest) Ive ever heard a human do…

        • Poor you .

        • I really need to speak to your parents!

        • Public toilet paper is so horrible anyway I'm surprised you can use it unless out of bare necessity.

        • +1

I've seen ppl pumping public toilet hand wash into their plastic bottle… its the global financial crisis..

    • How much freezer space do you have? :P

  • Damn didn't know about this and no Sunday shopping in WA. ; (

Woolworths Vic Park is open Sundays now, you could try there I havent looked myself.

      • any other Woolies open on Sunday? Besides Vic Park and City??

OMG, I can't believe how archaic WA's retail trading hours are….weekday supermarket trading til 6pm? Good god….How 1980's!

Most Sydney supermarkets trade til midnight (7 days)….when I lived in Melb, all my local supermarkets were 365days-24/7. I wish NSW would follow VIC's lead.

          • @ash2000: They've pulled it back a bit in VIC since then. Very few are 24hours now. Most are till midnight or 10pm depending on location/competition. Wouldn't want any shorter hours :-)

          • @ash2000: Coles used to be 24/7 in the 90s here on the Central Coast in NSW.

          • @ash2000: What, I would love for Supermarkets to be closed on Sundays, that would mean I wouldn't have to work them anymore!

  • Thnx man just bought from woolies self-served and eating for work hehehe

  • Nice, cleared out all they had left :-)

  • all gone at woolworths chullora

  • I just went to another woolworths and nearly cleared them out too, got another 17 packets making 30 total :)

I even had a discount card available to me so I got another $2 off. hehe :)

The only thing I don't like about these is they're from Italy. How much energy does it take to transport them frozen from there? Same as the thawed gourmet bread from the USA - ridiculous waste (Coles have bread from Italy). All nice stuff, but surely it makes far more sense to make it here.

    • Woolworth's frozen food comes from all over the world. Peas from the United Kingdom (Home Brand) or New Zealand (Select), brussell sprouts from Belgium, diced or chopped onion from Poland, spinach from the Netherlands, etc.

It's hard for me imagine how sourcing frozen food from Europe could be cheaper than getting it locally. Sure, frozen vegetables from China are made with cheap labour but I refuse to believe the Belgians work for $2 an hour too. And as suggested, the energy costs in moving frozen produce well over 15,000km must be quite something.

  • Glenferrie, VIC Safeway is all out of the meals, they have some of the Cheesecake and Bavarian Desert left.

  • Underwood Woolworths is cleared out .

    • Underwood, QLD? I was there half an hour ago and there were 4 spaghetti left.

      • I must be blind then .

        • Yeah it was hard to spot. I glimpsed at the freezer and thought I saw 4 empty shelves labelled with the eggplant spaghetti but the bottom shelf had some packets left.

  • Woolworths Morphett Vale and Noarlunga in SA both cleaned out too. The saving was quoted as $4.49, so the original price was $6.49 and not $8. Anyway, it would have been nice to try one of these products, but I guess people buying dozens of packs each got there first.

    • You can get a rain check as they have been restocking these.

    • I was thinking that too, curious as to why OP says it was $8.

  • Ferntree Gully's woolworths and Safeway is also cleared out.

Just went back after my initial 50, and got another 100 - they gave me two cartons of 50 :) They gave me 20% off too, for bulk buying, so it turned out alright in the end :)

    • Wow, nicely done!

      • 20% off…..$1.60 per meal! 150 units, that should see you well into second semester. In fact if you eat one every 2nd day, they will last you the entire academic year. At this point, you will probably never want another pasta meal again!

I gather you must have a big freezer?

    • You should just pay them for rental space in their freezer! Where are you going to keep all of them? I saw them for sale in the catalogue early in the week and then forgot about them. All sold out now :-(

    • HAHAHA Where the heck are you going to store them?
Wow, what a deal.. DAMN WA!!

    • Hmm… very lucky I guess. 20kg+ cartons must have been massive.

I use to work as a storeman at woolies and was never allowed to give bulk discount, not even to vending machine operators who would buy numerous pallets of soft drink.

    • You're gonna hate pasta after 1 box :)

  • How much protein is in these things?

    • +1

Penne has 20.8g of protein per packet.
The Gnocchi has 23.8g per packet.

      • Damn it, im going for 200g of protein per day.

This is really gonna slow me down when you condsider the calorie uptake.

Anyone know if there are any High protein variants of these (for the same price)?? I dun really wanna be mixing my protein powder in these italian snacks.

      Not enough

      • +2

There is no shortage of calories ….. ~700 per bag!

        • 700kcal per meal is pretty good actually, assuming you eat that for lunch and dinner that's a 1400 kcal for 2 mains, assuming you get 300 kcal for breakfast that's 1700 kcal a day, less than the average kcal needs for a man or woman. Of course I'm not too sure about the other health benefits of these ;)

Edit: Note that the nutrition quoted at the panel is for a single serving, if you are taking the value from there directly a packet has 2 servings so it would be 1400 kcal a meal which is quite hefty!

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah but are meals like this useful in gaining lean muscle?

            • @RobboTheYobbo: Given the calories vs the protein content. Probably not. Any product like this is mainly pasta. Might be better to use a bulk buy as weights ;-)

Seem to be very few left in many stores (in Melb's east at least)

None in: Forest Hill Chase, Blackburn Sth, Box Hill or North Blackburn! :< Doh!

..and it's such a good deal!

    Good luck to others tho.

  • All sold out Bonnyrigg and Cecil Hills :(.

  • yum! great deal.

  • Sounds like good deal. I prefer knowing whats in my meals =]

  • all out in bankstown…… im not surprised

  • Aberfoyle Park, SA, has plenty of stock. I bought one pack (Eggplant Spaghetti) to try tonight.

Unfortunately for us WA folk woolworths Karrinyup and Innaloo have been cleaned out!!

Anyone know where i can get my hand on some of these in WA - Me and my family ARE BLOODY STARVIN' !!!

    • You can get a rain check, you can also just call each store and ask if they have stock.

      • MAMA MIA!

        Is this a catalogued item?

        • yes for last week though, it was still on special at the Woolworths I was at today though.

  • Sold out in Belconnen, ACT

  • -2

    far this gives you stomache?

  • I know OzBargainers have a thing for fattening food, but I can't stop thinking that living on this plus chocolate (like the orginal person noting 50 purchases of this) will make OzBargain readers fattie boom sticks!

    • Are you with HBF?

    • Maybe but people can then work it off with this http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/21137! :-)

  • For Those in WA, Westfield Carousel has 20 or so left in their frozen section just before closing.

  • My local Woolies only had Penne Aribiata so grabbed one to try out.

    • Was OK, too much for one person but not really enough for two people once cooked up. If I paid $8 I'd be feeling really ripped off! For $2 OK, as it was quick, edible, and fairly easy.

  • Any stores in VIC left with stock? South Melbourne Safeway had none left on weekend..

  • They're a bit lacking, but for $2 it's quite good and it's extremely quick and easy to cook (yay I'm a masterchef!) No wonder they're on special though (still, even after it's meant to have expired) you'd have to be phsyco to spend the RRP on this, they're nowhere near worth $13 a kilo. I guess the same people that buy that are the same that buy the $40/kg packed meat when you can go to the deli 5 meters away, stand in queue for a minute and get the same meat for $15/kg.

  • Tried the Spaghetti, it was awesome for $2. Unfortunately my local woolies (Ashgrove, Brisbane) tells me these meals have been discontinued. Can anyone confirm please?

  • Has anyone seen these around lately?

  • Not since the first batch. Shame.
