Written off Vs Repair for a 2013 Madza CX5

2 weeks ago had an accident in my 2013 CX5. I had the right of way, and a driver coming out of her driveway didn't see us. Impact was about 40km (my front, her front quarter). Both front airbags in my car were deployed.

The car has been with my insurance company now for nearly 2 weeks. In that time, it's been assessed as a write off but after being assessed by a "specialised team", it's looking like it's going to be a repair.

I've been advised by the place doing the assessment that it's about $20k worth of repairs (mostly "cosmetic damage"). The car has an agreed value of $26900. According to my insurance company, it will be a repair IF the repairs is -$1 than the agreed value - unless it's not safe to do so.

Now, I don't want the car repaired. I've advised this to my insurance company and they've basically said "tough luck". I know I can get it assessed by a 3rd party company (at my cost) but has anyone successfully negotiated a "buy out" and care to share some tips??

Unfortunately they will just do whatever is cheaper for them.

"According to my insurance company, it will be a repair IF the repairs is -$1 than the agreed value - unless it's not safe to do so." Not quite, they also factor in how much they can sell the wreck for.

Which insurance company and do you have choice of repairer?

You may also get your own quotes and then claim from the other driver's insurance company.

I'd also be hesitant to have my vehicle repaired with $20k worth of damage, no matter what they say, the car will never be the same again.

  • I'd ask to speak to the manager or something and try and claim with $20,000 worth of repairs the car isn't going to be the same.

I'd post in the WP accident/insurance thread. There might be more people there that could help.

Does your insurer offer the 2 year replacement new for old if written off?

    • They DO offer the 2 year replacement, however we have missed it by less than 3 months!

I'd be on the phone now arguing that one with the manager or someone high up. I'd be saying you'd settle for a payout and not new for old.

Do you have young children? Saying that you are worried about your families safety could help your case as well.

Note: If you don't have children your safety is still important!

Also note this has never happened to me but from reading forums I have found out quite a bit!

        • Since you have read forums, I guess you're an expert now. $6K is quite a lot of money. Would they make a payout of the $26K or the $20K? If only $20K, would it be possible to auction or sell the car yourself and keep the repair money?

in an act of common sense, it's been confirmed as a write off… praise the lord. It's funny, i was on the phone to them earlier today, and they were still in the boat of "it's going to be fixed". I then receive a call a few hours later, "oh it's a total write off"
