30,000 Qantas Points - $195 Annual Fee - Qantas Credit Union Platinum Visa

30

Qantas Credit Union (formerly Qantas Staff Credit Union) has brought back its 30,000 Qantas Point Offer.

You earn 5000 Qantas Points when your card is issued, plus an additional 5000 when you make an eligible purchase with your card each month for the following 5 months. This is a good offer as you do not have to meet a minimum spend requirement, a coffee a month will do.

You earn 1 Qantas point for dollar on everyday spend and 2 per dollar for Qantas flights.

The annual fee is $195 which is quite high, but may be worth it given you do not have to do much spending on the card to get the bonus.

The card is a Visa Platinum and comes the usual concierge and insurance services associated with this type of card. Minimum credit limit is $6000 and minimum income is likely to be $35,000, in line with other Visa Platinum cards.

Qantas Credit Union has excellent customer service, although the branch network is tiny. The application process can be a bit painful as they require a lot of paperwork and the website is average.

      ~$200 worth of domestic flights.
Not worth it, if you only want to apply for the points.

      • I got a one way flight to Tokyo for around 26,000 points plus $190 in fees, that's a $600 flight, so I'd say it's worth it.

        • You can get a return flight Melbourne to Tokyo for $660.
Your 26,000 points +$190 in fees got you a one way flight. Assuming you need to return, a paid one-way flight back will cost $386 minimum.
By that calculation your 26,000 points was worth $84.

    • To use the simplest example of domestic flights, it would get you 3 and 3/4 MEL-SYD flights, although you would have to pay around $30 per flight in taxes.

Promotion aside, I have had this card in the past and to be honest, it's difficult to justify the $199 Annual fee.

Also, getting any waiver or reduction on the annual fee by calling them is near impossible even if you say all the right things.

There are cheaper and better ways to earn point to dollar redemption on Visa.

I realise there are better points per dollar offers but the no minimum spend is helpful - I know a lot of us are currently needing to spend $3000 in the first 3 months on the ANZ Rewards card, and $1000 on the Amex Velocity Platinum card.

This card has by far the most onerous signup and approval process I have ever seen.
As a new customer, they made me scan and email months worth of statements.
Not sure whether you would have to go through all that a second time. (I also was unsuccessful in getting a second year free.)

    • you said 'onerous', so a plus for you as thats the word of today!
