After upgrading to Windows 10 I needed a replacement for Windows Media Center for viewing free to air TV. I tried a couple of free options such as Kodi and Media Portal but frankly their user interface wasn't for me. A recommended option was JRiver Media Player, which turned out to be the best option for me. It also happens to be a very good player of high quality audio. When I decided to purchase I looked for a discount code and found that their code from 2013 is still working. I bought the Windows only license for $US39.98. There are Mac only, Linux only, and cross platform versions for different prices.

I downloaded webget from the link within the article, then in the EPG setup in Jriver pointed to webget and entered the parameters
"http://iceguide.icetv.com.au/cgi-bin/epg/iceguide.cgi?op=xmlguide&desc_length=0" -u [email protected] -p PasswordWithACapitalP -o "<path>\icetv.xml"

      Usability was my key criteria. I searched for VLC and TV tuners and got no indication of any support for program guides. I also value high quality FLAC support. Good on you if you can be bothered making the free options work for you. After 20 years in IT I guess I've lost my patience with poor user interfaces. Not that JRiver is perfect, but it was the best option I found.

        They both use libflac. Like basically every other media player.

    This is something my dad would have liked to have used… But I don't have much interest in many free to air TV programs, and the ones I am interested in are available online with a few methods

      If you're not interested in the FTA aspect, why do you keep posting on the deals that involve FTA ?
      Sounds like Netflix, Hulu or VPN deals are more your thing.

    Got a mate that raves about this, I took a very brief look and didn't find it appealing… that said I've been an XBMC (now Kodi) user since xbox original days (think it was XBMP or something back then)… after the move to Win 10 I configured (actually did it before upgrading to test it) NextPVR for Live (free 2 air) TV and it worked great, pretty painless to setup and can use it on any system in the house… and $0 :)

    To be honest, the only reason to use JRiver is if you have a stack of DSD music (for which Musicbee and Mediamonkey support is spotty) and couldn't be bothered fighting with Foobar.

    It's awkward and bloaty.

    If it could cut adverts and connect to a hdhomerun3 I'd pay twice as much.

    Been trying to run mythtv with any user interface (kodi etc) in Windows and just can't make it work. Backend never seems to be able to connect to database

      I use a HDHomeRun (original version now V4) just fine and others have played with commercial skipping http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=66954.0 (I just use the Right Arrow button to skip forward 30 sec at a time). Note: I'm a long time user of JRiver Media Center and an admin on their Forum but not part of JRiver in anyway.

        Can't afford to upgrade to the V4 for DLNA. It would make life SO much easier if I could.

          MC works with any version of the HDHomeRun and uses the BDA drivers not DLNA, so you should be good to go. MC also ofters a free trial version for 30 days so you can test it out.
