VPN for Android device

More specifically for Note 4.

Will be traveling later in the year in Asia, so I thought it would be better to subscribe to a VPN service just in case.

After a quick 10 minutes of googling, Express VPN and Pure VPN come up a lot, I don't know if they are really good or they spend a lot on marketing. It seems $10/month is the norm, but I also came across VPN Unlimited which is only $2/month. Price is not a huge factor since only needed for a couple of weeks, ease of use and reliability would be far more important.

Any recommendations?

Also I'm a little bit confused about setting up the VPN, is it a matter entering some settings into More Networks > VPN? Or does it require a dedicated app? But some sites also suggest you need to root the phone?! I don't need anything overly sophisticated or over the top secure, I just need some added security and also to use Facebook and Google (Gmail, YouTube, etc.).

I have never used VPN on phone, is it correct to assume once a VPN connection is established, all native apps will use the VPN connection by default and there's no need to mess about with individual applications?

Cheers!

  • You don't need to root your phone to use VPN and yes you are correct that all native apps will use the VPN connection.

The best VPN depends on what you want. Do you want privacy to be a must, are you fine with the VPN operator keeping logs of what you accessed or are you just after a VPN to access certain websites

  • I used an app called tunnel bear once just to see how it went and it actually worked quite well and was simple to use but then I lost the need for it so never paid them for any more access.

  • I use OpenVPN for Android with the recent VPN.sh deal. Although you can connect through the native VPN client over PP2P and L2TP as well.

  • I use ffvpn https://www.ffvpn.com/, it is easy to setting in your phone

  • Hi guys, sorry for lack of response. I have signed up with Express VPN, it's a bit dear, $18 a month after exchange! Anyway, for short term it's not a big deal, so far it has been good and really easy to enable/disable through the app. I will report back after the trip.
