Importing 1,100 Bags of Rice

Hello, I'm currently looking for some advice.
My dad is importing 1.1k 20kg rice bags, we live in Melbourne. It's our first time importing anything and we're wondering about the legal side of things, how will it go down, we have just talked to a "broker" and he told us that we would not be allowed to get the container to be delivered to our private residence.

If anyone knows anything about importing and could answer some simple questions it would be very helpful :)

The one question we have is how can we get the container delivered to our residence, is there any legal side to it? Was the broker correct? We have the space in our home to store the rice and will pay tax when it arrives, we want to sell it from our home as we do not own a shop.

This would be much more interesting if we were talking about ice…

    • Gonna fix a flood zone with rice bags instead of sand bags :P Absorption!!!!

  • Do you have a swimming pool? I have a feeling I know where this is going..

  • No idea why these days people are so caught up in trying to "import" something just to make a few bucks with NFI on the whole process.
I've had a few people around my circle ask me "what can we import to make money". If you're asking that question then the answer is nothing.

    • So the ideas just magically come without thinking about them?

    • Magic beans

  • Remember how you stack your rice, otherwise it may spontaneously combust it's a problem that plagues grain silos . Also don't forget about the firey accident in taiwan that resulted from flour dust.

  • To answer your questions I'd say that what the broker was saying is that the shipping company would not allow the container to leave the docks as they'll unload your rice and the other stuff, reload things here and send it off again.

1,100 bags of rice won't take up a shipping container or even half of one. Besides transporting a shipping container would be so high that it wouldn't be worth it.

Finding a way to transport it from the docks to your house would be the hardest thing

Bored at lunchtime, so I did some googling.
1,100 x 20kg sacks (22 tonnes) should fill a 20ft container. Rice is about 850kg per cubic meter, depending on variety, age etc. Standard 20ft container is ~27 cubic meters of cargo space. That's a shedload of rice.

Yeah, gonna take a bit more than a mate with a ute, for sure.

OP, this is the worst quick rich scheme I have come across. Who is going to buy 'premium' rice for $50 a bag from an Asian mans garage? No offence, but that sounds really really dodgy. I don't think you would even make one sale. You would make more money getting paid minimum wage at McDonalds working there for the same time you would invest in doing this.

I agree, this is a clear get rice quick scheme

    • You sir are a lad

    How did it go?

Since it was our first time, profit margin wasn't that great, but every bag sold within a mere 6 months or less even. It went well I'd say

      • well i have was going through some same thing if you imported and try to sold here in Australia let me know contact me i need to ask some questions thanks
