Never selling on Ebay again. I sold some old graphics cards for $300+ and Paypal wanted to hold my payment until the buyer received the item. Why? Because Ebay said my account was a slight risk… I have been selling on there for years. Ended up refusing to send the item till I received my funds, both times they obliged after speaking to their manager. An hour each phone call. Paypal said they couldn't release my funds next time until Ebay says "okay, he's an alright dude".

Ebay's policy; sell item for a few hundred dollars, send it to the buyer, wait till the buyer says "yep, got it", then get your money.

They refused to comment when I asked "what happens if 'someone else' signs for it and the buyer asks where their item is?".

    Yeah, no.

A great idea is to advertise on ebay and in item description let people know you are selling item on gumtree. I have often done this even on one item for $1500. Imagine the ebay ebay fees on that! This attracts many more people to see your ad in just in case you advertise it on ebay at a much higher price.

Imagine the ebay ebay fees on that!

$150 final value fee. 2.7% Paypal fees (on $1500, not $1350) which is $40.50 + $0.30. So to sell a $1500 item, it will cost you $190.80.

let people know you are selling item on gumtree.

May be the way to go.

That's against eBay policy and they will remove your listing.

        • Just say you have item advertised elsewhere and reserve the right to pull the ad

        • How is that possible when they own Gumtree? Unless Ebay was sold off recently….

    • I've been selling on ebay for 7 years- 700+ feedback. 100% Pos feedback.

paypal holds my money for 2-3 weeks.

      • paypal holds my money for 2-3 weeks.

May I ask why you're still selling on Ebay then? Why not just move to your own website?

        • +6

what's the alternative? aside from gumtree?

how will my website obtain the same coverage as ebay?

unfortunately, ebay is the coal burning power station

          @altomic:

          what's the alternative?

You must be selling some kind of niche if you've been selling for 7 years. Surely you can start a website and advertise? Perhaps Ebay is the devil we need right now, but definitely not the one we deserve.

        • @altomic: Could you have your own website.. and also sell/advertise on eBay/Gumtree?

I have been selling less year than you, but PayPal instantly pay to my account for my eBay and own website sale, some transactions are in the hundred range.

Withdrawal to bank took about 2-3 business days.

Maybe the value of your products are much higher or some personal/company details need to be verified?

  • Does this deal mean no ebay fees?

    • +3

No. The 10% still applies to normal auction. Then add the Paypal fees. Ebay is disgusting to sell on.

      • 11.5% final value fee with my "free" listings all of a sudden

  • Then what the h@ll is this deal for?

    • Bingo.

The promotion discount only applies to Insertion Fees. It does not apply to Final Value Fees

    • Precisely. The deal is for insertion fees. It lets you create more free listings than you normally would.

It seems mean to neg the deal because you don't like eBay though.

It seems mean to neg the deal because you don't like eBay though.

        It seems mean to hold my money until the seller receives the item then says he/she didn't. Then I'm out both the money and the item. My neg is valid due to;

        Major issues with retailer

  • +2

Not a deal. Ive never had to pay to list an item, only had to pay final value fee

    • +3

You haven't been selling on there all that long then….

  • I accidentally pressed "Associated" for whatever reason. Hopefully this comment removes the tag.

:EDIT: Nope. I'm not associated with Ebay. God damnit.

  • This is great, thanks

  • About time ebay stopped being such cakeholes to sellers. If only it were possible to organise a strike by all sellers.

  • yeah you pay 10% afterward, no deal

  • +2

For people who sell more than 40 items per month on eBay (like I sometimes do) and don't have a store, this is a reasonable deal.

    Thanks OP for listing!

  • +1

Didn't work for either of my two accounts.

  • Save $2 for listing fees, but pay 12% of your sale price for eBay fees + extra delivery fees (on top of your delivery fee) + paypal fees?

    Good goyim.

    • Actually I was wrong. I recalculated it, and you end up paying about 15% of your final sale price to eBay and PayPal.

  • It's Paypal that holds the funds not Ebay ?
Ebay is the Devil you know, I hate them too …what other options are there ?
Gumtree is owned by Ebay ! yes so where else is there ? a hanful of smaller sites or the newspapers and not many people read those, mostly older people i suspect.

    • It's Paypal that holds the funds not Ebay ?

They hold it on Ebay's orders.

    • "Shortly after PayPal's IPO, the company was acquired by eBay in July 2002"

I have to say ebay is a necessary evil… I hate paying the fees and it hurts every time.. I have never paid the insertion fee, I still think its worth to sell there sometimes but I will use gumtree/trading post whenever I can.

Like everyone else I resent the high fees on selling on eBay but the reality is there is no other more effective way to sell your stuff. If the alternative is no sale at all, then you are still ahead. Just factor the fees into your price as well as the postage. It's what you pay for the convenience and exposure. eBay is still the place to get really good deals, it's just over-run with retailers now using it as a cheap platform for selling rather than their own websites, and all the Chinese junk.

  • you know as much as people hate ebay they are actually cheap compared to a similar middleman i just read about - UBER

uber charges 20% for doing exactly as much as ebay and nobody complains about them?

I dont like eBay but this^ a true statement from the old deal.

unless you can find alternative option, we stick with eBay to sell unwanted stuff

  • It's not worth selling on eBay anymore.

The fees are extremely high these days

  • Yeah free listing but the final sellers fee and PayPal fees would make up for it.

    • fees on postage!

      • Don't forget driving to your local PO

  • Thanks

  • eBay and their sister Company, PayPal can go and get bent!

You sell something for $350, from that eBay get $35 and PayPal get $11, you end up getting $304!! (and take away postage, pfffft! use GumTree instead)

  • pay no Final Value Fees & PayPal fees, then it's a deal!
over 10%(total) is too much to pay for!!!!!!!!!!!

eBay should have 2 kind of selling fees:
one for seller with more than 5 same items(commercial), and other for seller who has less than 5 items(home/private sale)!

    • Why do they need it?
They want to make money on everyone. :)

  • Any way to know every time this is offered?
