Apple does not list the refurbished iPhone on their Apple store. Do you know if they sold them through other channels? I'm interested in getting an iPhone 5.
Apple US apparently has a "secret" eBay store every now and then. But not here in Australia.

Maybe you would do well to avoid travelling to any foreign country that recycles waste water into
drinking water.You can't really compare that as recycled water of that nature is done properly and to strict standards. Can you say the same for "recycled" electronics, considering things like phones and keyboards are typically filthier than toilet seats and are rarely cleaned?
You are right of course, but some people can't bear the thought of drinking recycled water either.
They probably just find out they forgot to send these to China. There are lots of demand from there so they can make fake iphone 6 box and put the old phone inside.
The richer chinese would be buying genuine stuff from an Apple store, they wouldn't be buying used iphones.
These are refurbished by EBgames and not apple, which generally means just a quick clean with a wet paper towel and making sure they can turn on.
A refurb by Apple is more thorough and usually includes hardware replacement (display if cracked, housing if damaged, and battery if worn down).
Probably would not expect very great battery life out of these units, but your mileage will vary.
