Rotring 800+ Mechanical Pencil $55.99 USD + ~$5.70 USD Shipping @ Massdrop

100

Update: 20 purchases reached, price is $55.99 now

9 purchased and 6 committed, which means it's 5 people away from another $2 price drop. Even with current price, it is not a bad choice if you are looking for the black 0.5 mm build, which is over $80 on Amazon or Jetpens. Other builds are slightly over $60 on Amazon.

Rotring 800+ is an upgrade of 800 version, which is a solid drafting mechanical pencil. Since the sleeve and lead are fully retracted, it makes 800 series a good pocket pencil.

"The Rotring 800+ Mechanical Pencil + Stylus Hybrid conveniently combines a mechanical pencil and stylus at the same end! With its unique retractable mechanism, switch seamlessly between the two by simply twisting the top to extend the pencil or retract it back to use the stylus. The capacitive stylus works on smartphones, tablets, and other touch screen devices. 100% effective at every angle, the precision stylus tip allows for high accuracy, control, and speed. The mechanical pencil features Rotring's brass mechanism to provide precise lead advancement, and a fixed lead guidance sleeve prevents breakage and offers a clear view of the page. A knurled non-slip grip provides comfort. The tool's ergonomic metal barrel has a nice, balanced weight, and its hexagonal shape ensures fatigue-free writing and drawing and keeps the tool from rolling when laid down." — JetPens

At check-out, you can select either Black or Silver finish with 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm lead size. Quantities of Silver/0.7 mm are limited to 17 units. (According to my experience, 0.5 mm is more popular than 0.7 mm and black is more popular than silver. Don't know why the least popular build in my opinion has limited quantity)

  • I've got the 600, love it. Has a nice weight to it and the quality seems very high. I'm sure the 800 is even better.

      I just ordered my 600 from Amazon last week. Wish this came out earlier, but guess it won't hurt to have one more.

  • The site requires an account to enter.. Or am I doing something wrong?

    I still have my papermate pacer from over 20 yrs ago

      Dammit… I paid $3 for one at Officeworks last month… :(

      • more money than sense.

          Horses for courses. Why not wear sackcoth then, same function - Modesty and warm in a potato sack !
          Its the Toyota Yaris vs BMW M1 argument all over again, both get you from point A to B, but its worth the extra $$$ to a subset of the population. And yes perhaps its more money than sense, but that not a bad problem to have !

          @Pesty:
          id rather spend $2 on a mech pencil so i can afford an m1
          vs have a $60 pencil and drive a yaris.

          In that case, you can probably avoid ozbargain altogether and go straight to dx.com

          @tuzii:

          Which is fine, as a good car is more important to you than a good pencil. But the same can be reversed, and can even be argued that you'll use your pencil/pen more than your car in terms of total hours. I write a lot for my work, and I hate driving, for me the I wouldn't bat an eyelid at a $60 pen or pencil. In fact my EDC pen currently is a titanium Mover with japanese Juice gel refill.

        • @Pesty:
          There was a M1 V Yaris debate? This makes me chuckle

    • mine is the more expensive one.

      I had the cheaper pacers but they kept breaking. so I saved up my pennies and bought the more expensive one. I believe I paid $20 for one back then.

    Will this work on an ipad?

    • +2

      Yes, it will.

      • Will it works on a Tab S?

        • I guess so. Isn't stylus universal?

    A $60++ pencil!

    • That $US, plus shipping, about A$85.

      • During the height of the space race in the 1960s, legend has it, NASA scientists realized that pens could not function in space. They needed to figure out another way for the astronauts to write things down. So they spent years and millions of taxpayer dollars to develop a pen that could put ink to paper without gravity. But their crafty Soviet counterparts, so the story goes, simply handed their cosmonauts pencils.

    I wish someone just gave one to me, I don't need it but very much want it lol

  • So can anyone tell me what makes this worth it over lets say something that costs $5? don't know bugger all about Pencils

    • +4

      Basically, quality. This one will probably be machined from a single piece of metal, so it won't bend or break in your pocket. Whether it would be better to buy one $60 pencil or 30 $2 pencils is debatable.

      Basically the same argument for buying a BMW over a KIA, or buying a TAG over a Casio watch.

      • It's BMW vs Yaris mate!

  • I know it costs a little more, but you could always go with this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/96-x-Pencils-HB-10pk-960-eraser-r…

    Assuming the mechanical pencil comes with a refill pack that lasts as long as a standard pencil, that's $87 per pencil vs $127 per 960 pencils (or 13c per pencil). My suggestion is a saving of 99.9% - Even if you include a dollar for a sharpener.

    • 99.9% discount. I would consider that an awesome bargain. Yet, in this particular case, for some strange reason that goes against the attraction of the bargain, I really, really want that mechanical pencil.
      Too expensive though. I think I will keep using the mechanical pencils work provides. They are not nearly as good, but are excellent value.

  • Is the stylus removable. I do quite like a few of the Rotring pens designs, but do think for that price the stylus part detracts from the aesthetics of the package. Additionally I don't find that style of stylus overly good anyway to begin with. If I had to use a stylus frequently I'd probably spend the money on a decent active one.

      I haven't got my 800+, so I can't tell yet. I guess there won't be any noticeable difference according to the picture. New 800+ is basically a combination of 800 and stylus. Pricewise 800+ is only few dollars higher than 800, so it's always good to go for the new model in my opinion. Maybe you can get more info from the official website, I remember they have tons of videos and pictures.

      • Ohh I wasn't going to grab one anyway, partner would kill me. I imagine I'd go the regular 800 or maybe the 600 over this though since 3/4 of the appeal for me is the design of the pen, and I think stylus add-ons works against that assuming they cant be removed.

  • i have the 600 rotring blks in 0.5 and 0.7 for close to 5 years and it never failed me, even after dropping it numerous time, and sometime nib first. Even tho some people say its still cheaper to buy $2 pacer @OW every 6 months, to me it was worth every penny (i bought it close to $40 bucks). it is CNCed from a single alum. body and weight slightly more than it looks. A very sturdy piece of work, the black is finished with a high quality powdercoating. For those who tend appreciate things in life, this is a great product. would have been a very good price for a 800+ if AUD is close to USD. only thing stopping me from getting them is the thought that my 600s will be replaced.
