You have 2 options:
If the OS needs a key to install, install it with a key.
If it doesn't need a key, install it without a key.Not much else to say unfortunately.

Nope. I have already installed it via CD.
Installed on the 30th or so and been using it on my main computer.
Virtually no change. Haven't bothered with Edge or any of the other built in Apps. Don't really like the Start menu and have stripped almost all the built in icons out of it. Changed all the privacy bits and pieces and done some other fiddling. I've run into a couple of compatibility issues but nothing serious that couldn't be fixed or worked around.
It does boot a bit quicker and seems to be slightly better at RAM management (I'm on 4GB).
It's not unlike updating from OSX 10.7 —> 10.8. Slight differences, nothing major.
So if I click update will I still have all my stuff? will my favourites still be there?
It should do. In a perfect world, all your programs will still be installed, documents , everything on desktop, printer drivers blablabla.
Having said that, better to have a backup and not need it than to have not have and be screwed.

Even if it doesn't work and you can't boot, it shouldn't delete anything. If you got a spare HDD, you can do a complete clone with Acronis, they give you a free trial

You can't get your previous key (via software.)
It looks like the key you are trying to use is for the Media Centre Pack. As you've discovered, that's not going to work.
