Recommend me a course

Hi guys, I want to do an online course, a certicaficate iv or diploma which serves me two purposes- 1. prepares me to get into a job straight away, something like bookkeeping or pathology (please don't recommend me a bookkeeping/accounting course, I already have an accounting degree and running away from accounting and finance) and 2. I can utilise the skill to open a small business after gaining good amount of experience on the job.

In that regard pathology is not ideal because I think it requires a huge amount of money to open a business. I am searching online myself but please give me a suggestion from your own experience or someone you have seen closely. I want to study something that is interesting and has demand as well. I am not physically capable of doing trade jobs.

Thanks in advance.

  • I already have an accounting degree

Excuse my ignorance, but doesn't that allow you to go straight into

    something like bookkeeping

? What's stopping you from using your accounting degree to go into bookkeeping?

    • Lots of issues- not good with numbers, high pressure of meeting deadline, maintaining high level of accuracy etc. Sick of doing month ends. Want a career change.

Are you serious? You are not good with numbers and you have an accounting degree? You didn't think that through to well, I wouldn't mention that in an interview.
There is no job where a simple piece of paper from Tafe will allow you to walk straight in, You still need to be the best applicant and having no experience will have you struggling. All jobs that are in high demand with entry level qualifications are labourer jobs.
Only things that come to mind are Web Design & mostly IT jobs.

        • Yes, it was a mistake doing an accounting degree. I figured out I wasnt good with numbers early enough but just dragged it along to finish. Was really tough.

        You are Treasurer material.

        • Lol. Thanks for the lightheartedness. Needed that right now. By the way I kind of like our current treasurer. He is as bad as other politicians but there is something about him which makes him look like an average Joe. May be its his dumb looking smile.

    Logistics.

    • Could you be a bit more elaborate please? What are the courses like and what does the job involve?

      • Freight forwarding, customs broker etc.

Would you consider hospitality a trade? E.g. get RSA. Work in a bar. One day open a bar?

What about training to operate a bobcat or bulldozer?

    Real Estate agent?

    Driving instructor, perhaps?

    Dental prosthetist? (i.e. making dentures)

Something IT related? (Just do one of the free udemy courses?)

Maybe even aged care or an enrolled nurse, but I don't think you can make a small business with that.

    • Thanks for your detailed post.
I am good with people. So, real estate is not for me. Can't stand too long on my feet, have some issues in the feet. So, can't work in the bar. Operating bobcat may be okay but sound a bit physical. Sorry, I am not lazy, just suffering from quite a few health problems.
Dental prosthetics sound interesting to me. I didn't know what it was until now. Will do a bit more research on that.

Will definitely look at some of the Udemy courses.

Aged care or nursing would be good for me as I really care about sick and old people but I want to work on my own in the near future at my own pace. That's the reason I am searching for a course that will lead to open up a small business in the future.

    • Dental prosthetist or that whole dental technicians don't have long left. The industry is changing quite rapidly with changes in equipment, They're now using 3D printers and CNC machines to make a lot of things, including dentures and crowns.

  • There was a story in Time a few weeks ago where they had a rating on the future growth prospects of different jobs and the stress level of those jobs. Audiology looked to be the go or was it audiometry? I can't remember.

  • If you already hold a Degree then you can get accelerated advancement in Courses like Teaching and NURSING - Nursing rules (can you tell I am a Nurse) Nursing pays well - yes the work is hard - but it's way more rewarding than many other fields.

Going into business for yourself as a nursing service is very common in fields like Mental Health, Pediatrics, Immunisation, Remote Clinics, Diabetes, Respiratory. Do it :)

  • Maybe do some research by getting one of those careers guide books or try this website:

  • Sorry to hijack your thread but I'm in need for a quick response and it seems like this is where the movers and shakers are.

Recently, on OzB there were some free (subsidised) online finance courses offered by TAFE. I've searched and searched to no avail. Can anyone recall them?

they required applicants to have very limited education. i.e. you couldn't apply for the course (Cert 4) if you have a qualification equal or greater to that course.

this is the most recent post read carefully.

  • What about a diploma of Project Management, or Business? From what I gather, the diplomas/certs teach more practical skills rather than theoretical knowledge in degrees.

  • Altomic, I clicked the + sign on your post, on my iPad mini, and somehow pressed the bloody -. Sorry about that…..any idea how to change it?

    • click on votes tab and I believe you can change it there.

      • 'Votes older than 1 hour cannot be revoked'!!

Sorry about that mate and thanks for the advice.
