Need a Cheap Mouse for Work

I am looking to replace my mouse at work. It would also be nice to get a new keyboard and mouse pad as well.

Any recommendations on a cheap mouse, keyboard and mouse pad for the office?

Most of my work is Excel based.

Your company doesn't supply you with a mouse and keyboard? That seems a bit odd.

Surely you can ask the office manager or someone to get you something through the stationary order?

    • They do but I don't really like them, they're quite old and basic.

      Here's what I'm using now:
      Mouse - https://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-ie/p/intellimouse-expl…
      Keyboard - http://www.kensington.com/us/sg/v/4522/1703/pro-fit%E2%84%A2…
      Mouse Pad - http://www.staples.com.au/main-catalogue-productdetail/stapl…

I think I can get them through the stationary order though.

      • Isn't the Intellimouse series pretty good though? Specifically in terms of ergonomics and shape, they are were the preferred mouse of many old skool pc users back in the day (even hardcore gamers).

I remember I had an Intellimouse 2.0 and when it died i was hard pressed to find another mouse like it — it was cheap and good.

Nowadays my favourite mouse for both work and games is the Logitech G500. The predecessor of this mouse is the MX518.

The G500 was updated last year to the G500S and then refreshed again this year to G502 Proteus Core. RRP is around $60 AUD.

They were super reliable. I had 2 or 3 over 10 years and they survived being bashed around in a bag every day.

Don't go with the cheapest for work. You'll be stressed and less efficient. Buy a decent, or at least a full-sized mouse.

  • Since you do a lot of work with Excel spreadsheets, you should make sure that you get a full length keyboard which includes a numeric keypad on the right hand side.

Wait until December and Microsoft should have their usual cashback deal for almost free keyboard and mouse.

I prefer a "slim" style keyboard with numeric keypad. The keybuttons are lower, like a laptop, as i prefer less "key travel". Almost any cheap keyboard will be like this

As for the mouse, i would spend a lot more. Have a look at gaming mice. My G5 is the best mouse i've ever owned, period. Logitech G500 is also pretty good. the two things I look for are thumb buttons and a good scroll wheel. The G5 has far too many bells and whistles, but I got it cheap from COTD

    • For office use I recommend looking for a good slim-profile scissor switch type USB keyboard. For example the Logitech K740, however this is pretty pricey and might be overkill for office environment.

    Define "cheap"

Well, every second week there's always a Coolermaster mouse promotion going on MSY. Last week i believe there was a laser mouse for $39. Didn't look too bad in terms of ergonomics.
