        • @AznMitch: I heard you can actually reset the KNOX counter. Regardless I only did it because mine was out of warranty =)

        • @ProjectZero: Nope, you can't. Tripping KNOX counter causes an irreversible physical change to eFUSE. Only way you could reset it is via replacing the motherboard (At least, it is true for all devices that were shipped with KNOX).

        • @AznMitch: Hmmm… is it still in warranty though? If not, there isn't really a point in keeping the KNOX counter IMO.

        • @ProjectZero: I've heard that the only time that you will be out of warranty with knox counter tripped is with motherboard, as it causes an irreversible change to one of the parts on the motherboard. That said, I am still not willing to risk it. Also, I actually have removed most bloats on my phone and I don't mind using touchwiz for some of the functions I use i.e. Multiwindow, SideSync, etc etc.

As with warranty, yeah, mine ran out of warranty, but still, there is a little part of me that wants to have that ability to go back (dunno why, though. I'd probably end up giving into the temptation).

        • @AznMitch: lol, actually I have thought of installing a TW based custom firmware for my Tab S… I do like the features offered.

There are several of these TW based firmwares available, of course whether you want to give it a shot is entirely up to you =)

          http://galaxys4root.com/best-galaxy-s4-roms/

From what I've read, the eFuse seems to be something to do with the internals of the chipset instructions, I'm hoping that sooner or later, it would be reversible as I don't believe the eFuse is a physical thing in the hardware.

        • @ProjectZero: eFUSE unfortunately is a physical change to the hardware. :'(

I've heard that someone managed to change the flag to look 0x0, but, that said, the hardware changes were not reversed.

        • I have NeatROM on S3 much better than Stock and still runs things alright

        • @neonlight: From a quick glance, that seems to be based off TW. With the limited TW support for the S3, I'm kind of put off by any TW based ROMs. MIght stick with CM which is based off the standard android.

      • I think it's called an option :)

$10 Telstra Cruise. 8 to 9 days battery life, doesn't freeze, doesn't lock up, rock solid stable. Smartphones are a joke and a waste of money. You can just picture Samsung and other corporations rubbing their hands when they crap them out - 48hrs battery life at best, obsolete within 6 months when the next model comes out, stupidly complex when all you need is calls and txt, hilariously unstable OS, so fragile that if you fart near one the screen will crack, and the perfect tracking device with all the backdoors.

I am amazed you have an Internet connection. Living in cave should be saver for you

      • Learn to spell before you learn to criticize. Saved $1400 by not buying Apple's rubbish, save a $1K by not buying Samsung's rubbish. Saved $30+++ a month by not getting a junky phone contract. Smartphones are a waste of money, the internet is a close second. I barely use it anyway.

        • +2

I don't think smartphones should be something that all people should be getting, it's costly, the "smart" part all drain battery like crazy (i.e. talking from Android side, messenger, facebook, Google+ etc etc). Fun fact, Candy Crush Soda Saga drains battery more than any of the apps that I've mentioned.

That said, I personally think it's preferences. No one forces you to use the latest possible technology (i.e. $1000+ phones, you could easily settle for something half the price). I've been using my phone for 1 year (Well, Windows Phone, then my brother who bought the phone at around the same time left so I am using his), I will probably use this phone till it becomes so damaged that it costs me more to fix it. Also, you don't have to go on those contracts that costs over $30+ if you chose to not get the latest models + use the wifi half the time.

If you don't use the "smart" part of the smartphone, like being able to use internet everywhere and having a computer at close proximity all the time, I personally don't think you should be getting one. Old candybar phones are pretty much better than smartphones in the phone department, it's the added "smart" part that sets them apart imo.

        • +4

Spoken like a true brat. Just because you don't use it or see the need for it, it must be stupid to use it.
For someone who barely uses the internet, it is quite amazing that you get involved in Internet forums.

I find it ironic that you're currently using the internet to criticize it. And that you're currently commenting on a thread relating to smartphones, something that you proclaim are a waste.

As others have stated there might be a fault with your S6. Mine has been rock solid. The fact you bought it 2nd hand on eBay raises a few red flags for me.

Hmmm, I feel like I've ranted enough about everything other than what you've asked, so let me add more to what I've ranted. S6 is one of the best phone available in terms of hardware but there are software issues associated with it. That is why I've mentioned waiting for 5.1.1, which supposed to fix many issues associated with memory leakage. However, some people on a forum were mentioning that the memory leakage might not be solved by the firmware update. They were talking about how Samsung f!@#ed up the memory management, that's why I've suggested other option of rooting your phone and tripping the KNOX trigger (which is irreversible and will stop you from using Samsung Pay, only way to reverse it is by replacing the motherboard).

If you want to grab another phone… LG G4 is lacklustre compared to S6. Hmmm, if you don't mind midrange phones, some of the midrange phones look fairly decent, but if you are looking for a flagship, I'd probably wait till the rumoured Snapdragon 820 shows up. If not, there are rumours on new LG Nexus 5, with FHD screen and Snapdragon 808 which would interest many Ozbargainers at least.

    • I have never rooted my phone and dont know much about it, dont want to risk it. im to scared. Lol. Yes i might wait for the new LG4 or something maybe note 5 if it has removable back.

      • Highly doubt Note 5 will have removable battery, but I guess everything is possible.

I saw a root method called, pingpong root, which apparently leaves the KNOX trigger intact for S6.
        http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/root-pingp…

If you don't want to root your phone, at least you could try disabling apps using a PC program like Debloater (just don't touch anything that looks like it's for the system and you'd probably be fine). If you disable a system app that's vital for your phone, you can always flash the phone with Odin. Since it's disabling, as long as your smartphone is recognised by the PC, you can always undo the changes.
        http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-r…

It's fairly simple, I've never liked the idea of rooting. It took me around 3 days to understand how things work (sorta), and people on XDA are nice enough to show you how to do things step by step (though I've managed to mess up 3 times, so I needed to use Odin to flash back to stock firmware). Though I guess I had my tablet that I could muck around before touching my phone.

EDIT: Just adding onto what I've said about the Note 5, the rumoured spec was not exactly far from S6.

        • Experience is the best teacher in this case, I was too scared to do it until my phone ran out of warranty. It isn't really that hard to root your phone, flash it with a custom recovery and firmware, you just need to spend the time to find trustworthy sites that can provide the firmware to you.

XDA is the one where I get all my things from and Cyanogenmod for the firmware directly.

All you really need to know is how to operate your PC (basics) and how to boot into download mode on your phone. I've rooted and installed custom firmware on my S3 a few times now, haven't stuffed it yet. Only thing I did was soft brick it but that was fix able by reinstalling official firmware through Odin.

        • @ProjectZero: That reminds me of my first rooting experience (which was last month). I got Kingroot, used Supersume to remove the Kingroot and replace it with Supersu, grabbed Flashfire and flashed it with stock firmware with everroot option to permaroot. It went fine.

I tried the commands to change the resolution (which was my main reason for rooting the tablet at that time). I was following this guide for Galaxy Note 4 and entered exact same resolution used by smartphones (which apparently don't work for tablets). Since the resolution was not normal, the whole system UI crashed, had to flash the tablet with stock firmware with Odin. The dumbest mistake I've ever made (so far).

        • @AznMitch: Mate you know more than I do then. Most of that just flew over my head, I normally just find a CF auto root and root via download mode. I then get a TWRP recovery and flash it via download mode and then I just install CM and gapps via recovery. pretty easy procedure.

        • @ProjectZero: I am pretty much blind in that area :) I don't know how to install a custom ROM since it was not what I wanted to do (+ I got scared). Do you need to grab certain firmware that has exploits unpatched? I am used to getting everything backed up with Titanium Backup so I wouldn't lose anything if I try custom firmware… Hmmm, decisions decisions. :P

        • @AznMitch: Based on what I know and the way I do it, installing a custom rom is easy. Once you have rooted your phone and installed a custom recovery.

The instructions I know is for CM but I'm pretty sure all custom ROMs work the same way.

          1) download the ROM and store it on the external storage you will be using (micro sd or OTG USB)
          2) boot into recovery
          3) back up your current ROM onto external storage (micro sd or OTG USB)
          4) wipe dalvik cache, cache and system (DO NOT WIPE recovery folder or boot folder)
          5) go to install and navigate to the downloaded ROM and proceed to install
          6) wipe cache and dalvik cache again
          7) reboot

Should take less than 10 minutes, of course this is the abridged version so for more detailed info, you're better off looking at XDA as they have step by step guide. But what I listed is essentially all you need to do.

        • @ProjectZero: Hmmm, that does sound easy. Well, time for me to look for custom ROMs then (I've heard so many ported ROMs from S5 that I wanted to try)

        • @AznMitch: Just make sure to read the installation instructions on the XDA page you get the ROM from. It should all be there =)

Have fun with your new S5 so to speak =)

        • -1

          @ProjectZero:
Sounded very complex, just restore it to 8.14 and u got to go, or return to apple and get replacement with no question asked ! Oh wait… Its not apple.. Sorry my bad….. :) i feel your pain though…

        • @hippies: I was talking about a phone that is 3 to 4 years old still being usable til this day with not much drama… can you do that with your iphone 4s? An iphone 4s can barely run iOS 7 properly, and by that I mean with a crap ton of lag.

If you have nothing to contribute then run along and play with the other children…

        • @ProjectZero:

i will play with another children after i watch you restore your 3-4 years old phone or brick it.. or sell it with no one buying it.. . wonder how long gonna be….:D

I used to change phones yearly being a tech junkie. I had a HTC incredible S, samsung galaxy nexus, HTC desire S, HTC one. Having a samsung galaxy tab, I decided that I did not like touchwhiz.

When all is said and done, get an iphone. All of the HTCs had bugs galore. Random shut downs, restarts, purple tinge to the camera on the HTC one - with no fixes. Galaxy nexus was good but battery life was terrible.

Ive had my iphone 5s for 2 years now - completely issue free. I might upgrade to a 6s when it comes, or i might not. When you get an iphone it honestly just works and you stop feeding the urge to upgrade because its just good.

    Good luck

    • Yeah I feel like there is still a stigma attached to android that it's got buggy software and is not as consistent as IOS. With manufacturers like HTC, LG and Sony building cleaner versions and revamped designs, the gap is closing.

That's the best/worst part about getting an iPhone, it's hard to go back as it's just so smooth and works everytime. It may be restrictive but this helps to maintain consistent performance, limited bugs and high prices.

      • -2

Yeah I feel like there is still a stigma attached to android that it's got buggy software

This is like my 5th or 6th Android phone (s6 Edge) and I'm ready to jump to an iPhone. EVERY Android phone I have has issues. Every single one, without fail. From what I can tell, iPhones just work. They might not have all the features Android phones do, but they have premium hardware and software that doesn't have the little issues that plague Android.

  • If your set on android I would say try out a new rom, there are guides on xpadeveloper that are very straight forward and it's actually surprisingly difficult to brick phones these days. I am biased to Apple but maybe try a cryogen? Rom or a vanilla version (Google stock).

If you want a new android, whatever the new Google one (nexus?) is probably going to give you the smoothest experience and latest updates.

Otherwise, you can always join the space grey side :)

Ever since S3, I never touched another Samsung phone. Their phone just get laggier the longer you use it, and YES even after clean wipe. It would never be the same like when you first bought it…shame you only found out now in S6

    • Had my s4 for a year and a half and it runs like brand new, your problem is most likely due to lack of hardware optimisation to new apps.

      • Also software support… the lack of updates on the S3 was terrible… Don't have any issues with KK on my S3 though.

  • Maybe return it under warranty. Otherwise Ive got the Galaxy S5 and havent had any problems. I read a comparison on the S5 to the S6 and the S5 did better, better battery life on the S5 was a major win for it but I think there were other things as well. Anyway recommend the S5

    • +1

If you have ever dealt with Samsung you'll know their warranty is shit and they don't honor anything

      • You are so right.

      • Not for me when I lived in Adelaide I had a Samsung Galaxy 1 and took it back under warranty to a Samsung place on Payneham Road and they were great. Fixed it no probs and was really happy, the people there seemed to really know what they were talking about too. Definite thumbs up :)

  • +1

    Sounds like it is faulty.

I would recommend waiting for the next Nexus 5, being released in about 3 months. After going from a nexus to a samsung phone, I can honestly say Ill never switch from Nexus phones after this one. The android experience is just sooo much better on a google phone.

Sucks because Samsung phones are quite nice.

    • Yeah I'm waiting for the next nexus as well.
Nexus phones, while not always being at the same level technology wise as the flagships, do have the addition of not having most of the software problems as new versions of the android OS are basically made for them.

  • its not fake, its not water damaged, i checked. its an AU model and with one of our carriers. Im going to stick with the phone a bit more longer, getting a new flip case for it as well. does anyone have finger print reader problems? maybe its cause my hands get sweaty easy.

    • +2

I have fingerprint reader issues. Once a week or so my phone decides that the fingerprint scanner isn't working anymore and I have to log in with my google password (which takes (profanity) ages to type). Even resetting the phone doesn't fix it, I literally just have to wait for it to stop throwing a tantrum, and then it will just start working again. F*** Samsung.

What's your current version? You can find it from Setting - About Device - Android Version.
5.1.1 for S6 is rolling out right now in many countries, I am not sure what version Australian one is currently on.

That said, if you bought it second hand, try resetting the device using KIES and see whether that helps.
Actually before resetting the device, you could try deleting the cache partition first (which wouldn't remove any apps or anything like that).
      http://www.solvemix.com/index.php/android-smartphones/533-sa…

      • 5.0.2 tried to update but i got the latest update, hopefuly they damn hurry up with that update. also i did the cache hopefully it works a bit better if not ill reset

        • Use KIES, it downloads fresh copy of the stock firmware, that should remove anything that might've been altered if you want to reset.

If you want to risk it, you could flash 5.1.1. firmware from other country with Odin, I am using S4 Active from Kogan (that stopped on 4.2) with UK firmware (though I am not too sure whether there would be an issue with compatiability, mine was an international version).

        • @AznMitch: whats KIES? and ill just wait for the new update should come soon i think

        • @shadowrukia: http://www.samsung.com/au/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/

Well, KIES3 to be exact. It's a PC program that's pretty much used for updating your phone firmware and doing emergency recovery. It's pretty much self explanatory. There is an option on Tools, Firmware Upgrade and Initialisation, which downloads the latest firmware (which would be around 2~3GB?) and installs it on the phone.

        • @AznMitch: it cant be used for s6, only smartswitch

        • +1

@shadowrukia: Wow, they've completely moved to smartswitch for S6? I didn't know that. That said, it does have the function I've mentioned. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8AZyalTf5Y

        • @AznMitch: Nice find, vid helped for sure, hopefully this helps a lot! downloading it now, lets see if it fixes some things. thanks for the help

        • @shadowrukia: No problem, hope it actually helps. :)

        • @AznMitch: Omg! IT HAS! finger reader is super good now i get it in one go

        • @shadowrukia: I am glad that it helped. :)

  • As long as you don't have to deal with Sony customer service or a warranty claim, then Xperia Z3 is the boss of Android phones overall.

It just does what a smartphone is expected to do and it does it well. Unless you have to deal with the above two points then… Lol

    • Oh man how bad is their customer experience…. I had a Z1 and it was hell!

Now I have a S6 and it has the focusing issue the op describes…

      • It seems that none of them provide decent customer service any more.

        • Tell me about it, I liked Samsung because they had a repair centre in Perth with. 2-3 day turnaround. Now they no longer repair phones, so it must be sent East, get it back, sorry no fault found….sigh…..

        • @hoxygt:

Yep. Exactly what they do. Run you around is circles until you give up.

        • @what:

Except I'll play their game on principle, first the TIO and if needed Consumer Protection/ small claims…it's a hassle I'm sure 99% of people don't bother but dammit it's a $1,000 phone!

        • @hoxygt:

Good. Stick it up them. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with. I am sure you have checked their FB page. Full of complaints.

Not sure if you have seen my past posts regarding my experience with them. Here it is if you want to take a look.

        • @what:

Great write up, my Z1 story was very similar but replace your Samsung with Sony. This time with the S6 I've gone straight to the place I purchased, gave them the opportunity to repair and they've done nothing.

It's almost getting to the point, if you want a smartphone expect issues at some point.

        • @hoxygt:

          How old is the phone?

If you purchased it from a telco, you can go the ombudsman for assistance.

          https://www.tio.com.au/about-us/contact-us

        • @what:

3 months old. The issue prob started after six weeks of having it, with Virgin mobile, yep next stop - TIO :)
