Never seen them this cheap before.
Not my favourite beer but always a good beer to have available to guests when you are hosting a party, i.e. no one will complain about it unless they are a tosser who "only drinks veebs mate".

    • +2

Yeah, the old wife beater is a much classier beer.

      • +2

Fair point, it's just that not everyone knows about it's UK nickname and I reckon it's still seen as a 'decent' European beer over here. Most catered functions will have Stella and James Boags bottles on offer; it's a safe bet.

Having said that, like someone else has said below, it's better to hunt after the Belgium brewed version if you like Stella. I would grab a case of this for a party if I hadn't already stocked up on Chancer and Hop Thief!

        • what is its UK nickname? what is peoples opinion of it over there?

        • @richox: Google stella wife beater.

        • +1

          @cymon:

ahh k thx I thought everyone was referring to VB as wife beater. German fella's I used to live with would always laugh at how Heineken, becks and stella are (well, were 10 years ago) seen as 'premium' beers here, whereas in germany they are treated as pigs swill

        • +2

@richox: Just like Corona in Mexico!
In the end it's all just beer and you should drink what you like the taste of and hope it's not a beer that is being marketed as a premium beer.

        • @richox: …..or Fosters in Australia.

      • Vife Beater

These are also good to drink at home alone

      yes…

Are they likely to be short dated?

      Definitely not short sighted.

        • @smokenmirraz:

Reminds me of my cousin who's still in uni who deserves a backhander 50% of the time (snoozing away the other 50%)… miss i've got a smartarse comment about anything.

          haha

    • Dan Murphy's do but T&Cs state it's meant to be a local competitor.

  • +6

if you drink this beer on the regular you will notice the difference between the UK import and the Belgium import. Also Belgium import is 5.2% alcohol.

This is equivalent of living in the UK and getting the Australian imported Heineken rather than the Netherlands imported Heineken

    • +1

      Well said.
I was SURE the Belgium Import was 5.2%, just wasn't game to say it. You did!

      • +1

I was certain it was 5.2% however I may have cheated after all I work in a bottle-o ;)

  • +3

    Belgium import>UK import>locally made

  • +2

UK Stella brewed under license (aka wifebeater) ain't very good. Not a great offer to be honest, not a patch on many beers you can get here at 40 bucks slab. UK Stella usually ends up in Supermarket multibuys (3 x 12) where you get about 36-40 bottles for the equivalent of $40.

    • Proof?

    • +1

Proof - I'm a pom. Supermarket beer is cheap. A 500ml can of beer can be bought from any licensed convenience store shop for $2. Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Co-op (we have lots of chains) all compete in a continual beer price war that heats up at Xmas, Easter and any public holiday.

NSFW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F61p0g2Sq4 much classier drink than VB.

  • +2

In the last few days I've had Stella Artois, Uberbrau, Lowenbrau, Heineken, Saint Martin (Aldi) and Peroni. I like them all and like the way they are relatively cheap enough to drink day-to-day. My regular favourite is Bitburger and all-time is Pilsner Urquell, so I reckon $35 for a slab of wifebeater is pretty good. Thanks, O.P.

P.S. I'm a teacher and on school holidays…I don't do this all the time!

    • Fellow Pilsner Urquell fan here. not sure where you are located but Mr liquor in Cronulla and Ramsgate has the fully imported version straight from Plzeň for $39. cant beat that, unless you fly there and drink the unfiltered/unpasteurised version straight from the keg.

  • +1

Good price for some authentic wife beater…

  • +1

    I'm glad it's not only half imported…

    • If it comes from UK shouldn't it be "fully exported?"

  • Had anyone found out if this is in store yet?

  • Cheers will grab a couple for bucks party next month. Hopefully they have stock at Leichardht.

  • +1

    Online only

    • +1

in that case title should be added to + shipping. $7 I think to most areas in metro sydney

      • +1

Only if you place a small order of less than 6 slabs. And who does that? Spend $200 and the shipping is free.

        • Free Shipping is only for wine and spirits. Beer is excluded.

  • +1

if you have a costco membership, you can get the belgium stuff for around 36/37 and even Peroni red's for about the same.

  • +2

For anyone after Beck's, it's still $34 a case at DM
