Using mine right now, paired with an ALDImobile PAYG… brilliant =)

Unless of course you forget to bring the modem… then F*** lol

    Not a bad deal.

However, I am on $100 red plan I found it quite hard to use all of the data (I got 6+2 last year)

VodaFAIL's network is sometimes unreliable so sometimes it is quite hard to use them up. I believe they have oversold the resources around my area (Reservoir, near Keon Park R/S), it is probably due to the fact that they are running free weekend data for prepaid customers.

    • +2

Not just your area. Using data in the northern Perth suburbs is difficult especially when on a train with lots of users. Thankfully though, not many call dropouts.

They're adding too many services to an already strained infrastructure.

    Hey,

Not sure if you want to add this as an improvement.

You can get a free 8 inch tablet if you sign up for 12 months on the $30 plan [In store deal to 18/8]

Not the greatest tablet but free and you can put the sim in your other device.

    K

    • Interesting, is the tablet with the bonus 4GB data?

      • Based on what I can see… I don't think you get the bonus 4B of data if you choose to get the free tablet…

Out of all the tablets, the only one that fits the bill would be the Vodafone Smart Tab 4, when you add that to the basket with the $30 plan, the bonus data does not show up.

I could be wrong as I'm not sure if this is the Tablet Kevst was mentioning.

Please see my brackets - In Store Only Offer.

It is an in store offer only.

The catalogue offer is $99 with any month to month BB Plan [$20 min].

I got this offer Yesterday and the thing works very well even if it is only the 3G network.

          K

        • @kevst: Cheers for the clarification.

  • I was using vodaphone 4g for 6 months (bought in for their great overseas roaming). Reasonably poor coverage slowed my data speeds to 20mbps in the centre of adelaide. Recently switched over to optus on the 8gb for 50/month online offer. My data speeds are now 90mbps down and 30mpbs up. Subjectively better call quality

Good price for this deal for the data. Vodaphone network has improved since I last used it 5 years ago but Optus is much much faster

    • Optus is better than VodaFAIL in my area and the optus 4G is great.

I totally agree with you that Voda is getting better but sometimes you may get quite frustrated with their reliability issues. I am guessing the free weekend data would be just a pressure test for their network.

Not to mention that I am one of the customer who is using their free unlimited data over the past weeks as I am moving into a new place and my DSL hasn't been set up yet. I think it is quite unfair for postpaid users (I am postpaid but I am using a prepaid sim in pocket wifi during the weekend).

PS: my phone never drops for both optus and vodaFAIL.

      (Reservoir, VIC)

    • Optus' Data-only offers are Costly (& requires a White-packaged SIM)

      I assume your Optus 8gb for $50/mon is a Phone SIM…?

Where is [Optus-owned] VirginMobile, in price & performance?
(said to be Cheaper, last time I checked)

      • It's the 50/month for 8gb and unlimited calls and text. Virgin is an Optus reseller. As far as I am aware it is just as fast. Generally slightly cheaper but new Optus offers are quite competitive. The thing going for Virgin is the best customer service in the industry

  • I just wanted to chime in - I used the 4G for 3 months at the start of the year when they had a unlimited data offer. I was clocking in around 8mb/s or something crazy good like that. This was in Perth. If it was cheaper I would have used it as my stand alone ADSL service.

Just thought I would add I'm with Vodafone, live close to the CBD (Melb) & the coverage & speeds are great, never have issues

    • Usually Vodafone is a hit and miss, I've not have an issue with it yet in Sydney though… mostly in the western parts of Sydney but don't seem to have any issues in the CBD or anywhere in between.

      • +4

I switch between voda and telstra regularly (thanks to the prepaid starter kits found on ozb!) and find voda has faster 4G speeds in the Syd cbd and inner west… Used both to tether on my comp so play games (CS) or live streaming and voda had faster speeds + lower ping

        • Thank you for your comment. We use 4G Vodafone and wondered how it compared. Friend with Telstra was always trying to tell me Telstra was better!

        • Same in Perth, Vodafone 4G is much faster than Telstra's 4G. I have both, VF for work and Telstra for personal.
Even with 700Mhz 4G on Telstra, Vodafone still beats the speeds hands down.

The prize for coverage on the other hand of course goes to Telstra.

  • +2

Damn if I wasn't locked in with Optus I'd jump on this for sure

  • Last week, Telstra intro'd "Telstra Air" (lets you consume your ADSL quota from your mobile, PROVIDED you're within range of one of their WiFi Access points (Locations NOT available… "Trust us… just look for the Air logo")

It can bring price of mobile data down to ~$1.50 (or less), if you can find & use a WiFi access point from where you need it (which is anybody's guess).

I wonder if they'll sell you a "virtual" ADSL install (ie, NO install), ie, so you can pay ~$1.50 / GB for all of your "ADSL quota" used by your tab?

Anyone seen any Telstra Air logos in SA?

    • There are many wifi spots around Sydney CBD. They ran a free trail for everyone till last month. Normally they are on the Telstra phone booths.

    • Adelaide? (What? No trials?)

Did I hear (on the video promo) that the "Telstra Air" app DOESN'T get you access to a non-Telstra neighborhood Shared-WiFi access point…?!?

If so, it's an Unfinished design,IMO.

    • I'm on this, it did not cost anything if you have Telstra broadband. However, you have to have a Telstra router and share some of your internet (unmetered) with other Air users. Your usage comes off your ADSL quota. Only been on it for a few days, but I have used it at a restaurant in StKilda and it worked quite well.

Once a lot of Telstra users join and share their home WiFi, there will be hotspots everywhere…

  • Is this only for new customers?? or does it apply to existing customers who already run this exact plan, and want to double the data for free??

    • +2

Existing plans , as long as your not in contract , should work.
I went to the store yesterday and I had an old mobile broadband plan not under contract anymore, they are happy to upgrade me to this deal.
I didn't take it yet because I'm paying $15 for 2.5 gb. Only at 3g speeds though.

      • My mother still uses 3G and I find my 4G phone is very comparable speed wise inthe same area! We both use Vodafone.

    • +2

Give Vodafone customer service a call, back when I had the $50 red plan, I did it everytime I saw a promotion and they usually gave me the discount.

      • Yes; I am on a Red $40 plan for $35 … always ask what they can do better.

  • Ok, so very naive about phones and data so would love some help to know if this is right for me.

I currently have a galaxy s5 that I use for phone and browsing, but keep going over my data allowance. I've got a plan with virgin and then data add-on.

Is there any way I can use this sim in my phone as the data and the current sim I have for the phone? I have no idea if that's even possible.

    • +1

If your phone can only take one sim then no you won't be able to make use of two sims at the same time.

You can however do setups such as:

Use your phone for calls & have a separate device (such as a vodafone pocket wifi modem) solely for data (1 sim for each device, 2 sims total)
Use a dual sim phone (I'm not familiar with this but I'm sure there's people on here who can offer guidance)
Use two phones (this is basically the same as having a separate device as a modem
Physically switch between both sims meaning use the phone only and then switching sims to use data only (this would be a pain in the behind, please don't do this)

    • +1

      @lemc6125,

At this point of time the only way to do that is if you are using a dual sim phone. Your phone only has one SIM slot so its not going to work unless you have something like this: http://www.magic-sim.com.au/product/id/30/MAGICSIM_ELITE_-_G…

Problem with the above adapter is you have to switch between the sim cards meaning its not both active at the same time.

    • Thanks for the help!

  • Good deal actually. Although I'm not presently in the market for a mobile broadband device, I once needed a mobile internet service really badly because my then ISP failed to have the service up and running in adequate time.

This is a decently remarkable deal.

On these so called no contract month to month you can leave anytime and owe nothing.

They still ruin your credit by making a credit enquiry. Every credit enquiry on your credit file work against you. It remains for 5 years.

    • Credit checks do not ruin your credit history; only adverse reports like non payment of debt are negative for you. Freedom of Information legislation means everyone has the right to view their personal files … and have any errors amended too. I shop around for insurances each year which often show on my credit report; that is nothing bad. Just shows I am canny; certainly nothing negative on my credit report.

      • -1

        You are wrong.
Try having 10 credit checks a year see what happens you have no idea. All credit checks are derogatory it means you are seeking to borrow. Why? Because you have financial problems. All checks remain on file 5 years.

  • +1

I was using that on my iPad Air 2, average speed but good value for money.

Vodafone using Optus network while roaming so not so sure why the speed different.

Optus is not as good as before btw.

    Cheers

    • +1

Vodafone using Optus network while roaming so not so sure why the speed different.

Vodafone has their own network, what did you mean by that? Are you perhaps thinking of Virgin mobiles?

      • +2

when 4G vodafone has their own network, when Vodafone has no coverage they are roaming on optus network.start 2 years ago.

Here is the news from SMH

        http://www.smh.com.au/business/vodafone-optus-unveil-mobile-…

        • Oh really? Didn't know that… wonder if I'm using Voda towers or Optus then…

        • @ProjectZero: should depend on which one is more quite i will say…

        • @ProjectZero: Vodafone always used to use Optus towers … as long as the service is good it doesn't really matter. The opposition always used Telstra towers. Depends where you are; Vodafone should be able to tell you where your nearest (or best) tower is.

        • @JediJan: Well I'm pretty certain I'm using Vodafone towers when I'm at work or at home… used to have virgin mobile and the reception was horrendous when in those two areas lol.
