Westpac Travel Insurance- Is It Comprehensive Enough?

Hey guys!

Pretty new traveller here, I am planning on using my Westpac platinum travel insurance for my upcoming 6 weeks back packing in europe.

Now I was wondering if you guys have much experience with this and if it is comprehensive enough for my trip?

I know it doesnt cover loss but really all I will have of value is my 250 dollar galaxy s5 and I am pretty careful.

It seems like all the major things like medical and missed connections (other than me being silly and showing up late) are covered.

I bought all my flights on the card so I am covered. I found the flights on OzB too!

All info welcome :)

thanks again

Now, what you need to do is click this link and read the Product Disclosure Statement very carefully.

It will tell you more than anybody on here can. It's got all the nitty gritty info, like the fact you're covered for $2.5m of public liability claims, or the fact that your spouse is entitled to $25,000 insurance under the circumstances of your accidental death. See? Neat!

Read through it all. It may be an information overload, but at least you'll have a crystal clear idea of where you stand. No short cuts, mate.

    • haha you and me always think alike answering these type of forum qs.

  • I would say yes, it would be fine. I'm going to Thailand using the same card / insurance and have looked through the PDS and it looks pretty normal for travel insurance.

  • Note the excess makes it not worth claiming a lot of minor stuff.
Also, claims need records from the incident (e.g. Police report) which can be a hassle.
That said, I only buy insurance to cover catastrophe, so it suits me.

  • I have relied on the Westpac Travel Insurance for many years.
I have read the PDS many times. It seems to cover everything that my that most other policies offer.
I have never needed to make a claim so cannot advise on this front.
Would be great to hear from anyone that has claimed under this policy/inclusion.

  • I did a claim for accidental loss of digital camera once (while travelling overseas). At that time, I remember, there was no excess for the claim.
Had to go and report to a police office but after all got the cost of the device recovered by insurance. Good I had PDS on hand to read and action accordingly, otherwise wouldn't have a police report for the claim. Other than that the whole process was smooth and easy.

  • Sorry i forgot to mention I had gone over the PDS, i actually thought I had linked to that but oops

I am pretty sure it will suit my needs

I just thought people might have some other experiences with it :)
    Thanks guys

  • I would go with someone else. In my past 3 OS trips I have used Bupa, 1Cover and Travel Insurance Direct.

For my next trip I am using 1Cover again as it seems to be the best value for money.

TID was a hassle to claim through when I broke my glasses in the UK (my spares were in Holland at my rellies). I couldn't get any help on the spot, had to dig out receipts from 18 months ago AND send them the broken glasses after I got back (weeks later) which I think is a bit much.

    Anyway, just my experience.

  • The Westpac Travel Insurance is now underwritten by QBE as of the 1st July. Previously they were underwritten by Zurich. So you won't find anyone with previous experience though I believe ANZ card Travel Insurance is also underwritten by QBE.

  • We've had to claim on a complimentary credit card travel insurance policy once some years back when our accompanying daughter took seriously ill. We had lots of non refundable advance payments on air, hotels, car rentals etc. Zurich paid up promptly on a fully documented claim, the full amount of the claim less a small excess. We've relied on the same card insurance ever since, although we've not made any further claims. Probably saved us $10K in insurance premiums in the last 15 years .. :-) .. !!
