  • Been thinking about getting a NUC/Brix for months and months and this deal is awfully tempting. Is the 8gb RAM stick not compatible? Seems like a better choice than the 4gb for the same price.

    • +2

They require 1.35V RAM so the 8GB stick will not work.

      • +1

Good thing I checked first then, thanks for confirming!

      • +1

thanks silent1 for your assistance in clarifying.

So, 16GB of Kingston Hyperx Fury RAM really costs $644 !?

    • +1

thanks for pointing out, this is a typo error.

This was around $65 during the last round of 40-70% off COTD deals.

    • yeap, i got one.. works fine:)

  • Items in Group A & B are about $200, making items in group C free.

    • +3

Except the group c items are dollar store filler items.

  • Would love to try a brix.

    • Give it a go…I bought an i3 NUC and I am seriously considering switching over to that full time and only using my main computer for gaming

      • i got one of those core i 3 3217 models
at 219 on discontinue sale, excellent machine, can take up to 16G ram, only catch is Msata as hdd which not many people knows what to buy for.

these boxes are better than MAC mini!!

        • +3

The Baytrail (Celeron J1900 or N2820) NUC/BRIX only has 1 RAM slot so only 8GB and doesn't have mSATA or M.2.

        • @silent1: That is a very important piece of information. I looked at prices between the BRIX and the NUC at the i3 level and went the NUC so I didn't delve into the RAM/SSD loadout. That said having a 2.5" bay is good enough, I am using a 2.5" SSD in my NUC even though it is M.2 capable

  • if the 8GB notebook DDR ram was 1.35v, then it would make the gigabyte box a steal of this deal

the gigabyte box' J1900 leaves those N28XX model nuc to dust in computing power.

The description did not disclose the hard drive extension specs

  • That Astone Charge Dock… are we able to connect wireless dongle for mouse and keyboard while charging the samsung android unit? OTG and charge at same time?

  • Rep, could you include an 8gb stick compatible with the brix?

  • 16GB USB flash drive in group C out of stock and none of the other group C items interest me. Rep, getting more stock or provide more choices?

  • +1

    OP,

you may need update the post:

    New
    Toshiba 16GB USB drive

sold out SanDisk Cruzer Orbit 16GB USB2.0 Flash Drive

  • i'm using that gigabyte nuc at home with 4gb of ram and a 160gb ssd, it's great, plenty fast for general use and browsing.

for those thinking about holding out for the new low end intel ones (broadwell?), the performance difference is negligible, the j1900 matches the most powerful one. they will however, use less power and have more features, most notably more usb3 ports, a card reader and another digital video out.

the only real complaint i have is that this thing just isn't very quiet, and there is no manual fan control other than an auto setting in bios, as of now speedfan is not compatible. having said that, it's not too loud and bearable enough, definitely more quiet that any laptops i've heard.

    • I thought these CPUs could be passively cooled? So there is a small fan in there?

      • I am running an i3 5010U NUC with 4GB (to be upgraded to 8GB soon) and a 250GB SSD, certainly not passively cool but virtually no fan noise, I can only just make it out when I am using it late at night and the house is totally silent.

Now this NUC has the 'interchangeable' lids but I am yet to find anyone selling lids. I would love to have one with a card reader or even just more USB ports.

        • +2

if intel made a j1900 nuc, i would probably have got it instead of the gigabyte for the fan control alone :)

that's actually pretty important, i would consider waiting for the new nucs just for the fan control!

        • @baldy: There are some fan control options in the BIOS but I have left mine in AUTO for now. The price of the BRIX J1900 is tempting though. I would hazard to say it's performance is going to be similar to the Broadwell i3 (that I own) which is a lot more expensive.

Since you are happy enough with your BRIX J1900 maybe it will be worth waiting for SkyLake to arrive

        • it's too late for me! unless mine dies i won't be upgrading for a long, long time. auto on the gigabyte has a minimum fan speed of just under 2000rpm, which unfortunately is audible though unobtrusive.

anything with an 'i' in it would blow away the j1900.

i actually have the name now, the new low end intel nucs are braswell based! coming in dual and quad flavours, even the fastest one only matches the j1900 cpu wise but doubles gpu performance. doubling performance at this end of the spectrum though doesn't amount to much.

        • @baldy:

Braswell makes a lot more sense….I was confused by your reference to Broadwell as the Broadwell NUCs have been around for a bit now.

Don't write off the J1900, it does have 4 real cores and is lower power than the i3, it isnt bad considering the age of and 22nm architecture. It also blows the doors off the N2820 (http://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_celeron_j1900…) which is the price equivalent in the Intel NUC range at the moment

      • +1

fan, pretty much the same as what you find in laptops.

there are some passive ones but generally i find them not worth the time, high temperatures, performance throttling, all that nonsense.

intel nucs are actually very quiet, and if they haven't made any changes then they also have really good and fully adjustable fan control.

Does the printer include a set of ink? And how does one claim the $100 visa card?

  • Gigabyte Brix gtx 760 does have Thermal throttling issue when playing heavy games so an external cooling system like a usb fan might help.

    • I'd like to see them add a GTX 750Ti (60W) or even the GTX 960 (120W) instead and see how it fares against the heat. The GTX 760 is 170W.

      • Yeah thats what i thought, why use Kepler instead of Maxwell in this form factor pc.

  • Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Non-ECC SODIMM RRP 164$ in what century did it cost that much ? it's a shame they don't seem to sell dual channel kits (unless you go for maxi high end) why?

  • Stupid question…just checking the 4gb Kingston RAM listed is compatible with the j1900 brix listed. Looks to be…

  • Is the Brix + SoDIMM combo worth getting as a HTPC or would the NUC N2820 be better value? I have a i5 NUC and my brother is looking to put together a unit of some sort to connect to his TV now as well.

    • The J1900 is a quad core compared to the N2820 which is dual core. You can easily get an SSD for less than $100 which will put you ahead in both performance and cost.

    • J1900 has double the passmark speed

      • +1

The J1900 is a little beast of a CPU, very responsive and efficient, especially for the low power draw / requirements.

  • +1

Any 4tb hdd to replace the one before? I missed out and really needed that.

  • +2

Thanks OP, bit the bullet and purchased a Gigabyte Brix J1900 + Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600 SODIMM 1.35v RAM + SteelSeries Mouse Mat + SanDisk 128GB SATA III SSD for $279 delivered. Very happy with that price :)

  • -1

Does the Gigabyte Brix J1900 run well with ubuntu-14.04, or are there big problems with drivers?
And does it play online vids ( youtube/flash/html5 etc ) at 1080p easily, or is the cpu always above 50% ?

  • Is the Gigabyte brix suitable for gaming? StarCraftII, DiabloIII, etc.

    • +1

I'd say Starcraft II would be a little too much for Baytrail. A 2GHz Baytrail core performs around a 1GHz Haswell core so the J1900 will be quickly overwhelmed when the units increase on SC2. For D3 there's a youtube video running at 720p 20fps so maybe 25~30fps without recording software.

      • I need to open two Firefox browser (normal & private) and two chrome (normal & private), so total 4 browsers at one time and plus 3 excel sheet, does J1900 can handle it ? normal core 2 duo is lagging to switch from one to one, for warehouse business, thanks.

        • normal core 2 duo is lagging to switch from one to one

How much RAM does the C2D have? You may not have enough RAM on the system.

        • @silent1:

2G RAM with Win XP,machine is 6-7 years old, cheers

        • +1

          @tinkko:

          2G RAM

Grab another 2GB DDR2 stick to speed it up depending on slot availability. (DDR2 SODIMM for laptop)

        • @silent1:

don't you recommend for this one, I need backup machine, thanks,

  • Question for Store Rep:

Buffalo Linkstation LS441DE 4 Bay RAID NAS. Does this unit take HDDs greater than 4TB? like the WD 6TB or Seagate 8TB drives

  • I don't need anything, but it's sooooo tempting. Too bad the NAS is a Lenovo. Nothing but bad experience with them.

  • Items delivered this morning…excellent service…son very happy!!!
    Thanks OP :)

    • where are you based? I am in Melb and tracking still shows transit between Sydney to Melb depot.

      • I'm in Melbourne…ordered Monday afternoon.
Yours should be here very soon :)

  • Received my package in Adelaide this morning.
