With the holidays coming up, it's a perfect time to find a few good educational apps to help your kids.
King of Math is one of the better designed educational apps i've seen. I'd consider it suitable for most probably about 7 years to low teens. They will almost certainly need help with it though - some of the questions are tough, particularly fractions.
What I love about this app
- The questions have enough variety to keep them interesting
- The questions rarely repeat themselves
- It doesn't treat your child like they are an idiot
- There are no "dress ups" (I really dislike this about products like Mathletics - it's the "dumb it down for the kiddies" mentality)
- You have a simple progress mechanism. It makes the questions progressively harder as the student demonstrates a skill with the level
- The sections are sorted logically
- You can repeat a section, but you only get a bonus for it if you do better than last time
- The theme of the app is consistent (you'd be surprised how many educational apps are all over the place - they confuse me just looking at them)
- Suitable tailoring for boys and girls
What I don't like about this app
- The questions don't reflect real world problems beyond the most basic of questions
- You are rewarded for time based activities as well as accuracy. This is both good and bad - but for students that are slow and very clever, it's a punishment
To be clear, I've not had anything to do with this app. The author(s) is Scandinavian. I just think this is one of the best apps around … and for free, it's an absolute steal.
I had a quick look at the second part (King of Math 2). It's slightly more polished. I couldn't really review it properly as I didn't play it much. I don't give an educational app points for eye candy. But, it passes the "don't insult your kids" test … most apps seem to embrace the "dumb it down" mentality.
