  • Changhong any good? I've heard of them but never actually seen/used one.

    • Saw one in store last week, was better quality then the Dick Smith branded TV and the JVC on display. Salesperson said they use a Samsung panel (can't find anywhere online that confirms this)

      • Changhong make their own panels, some low end samsungs have used their panels before.

Out of the no names.chinese brands around at the moment I believe only Changhong and TCL make their own panels. Personally I have a40" Changhong for the kids play room and it is a very good unit, speakers are crap as expected on small low end TV's but a soundbar fixes that. Picture Quality is excellent IMO, no noticeable input lag with the little console gaming I tried on it and HD sports displayed a great picture.

Basically they're a huge brand within China and are trying to push into other markets now and build name recognition here hence the low pricing.

        • yeh I'm sure you cant beat quality/performance value for money at this price. just a matter of how much value you put on having a branded TV

          @edwinlin88:

I will be honest I only went for it because it was for the kids play room, had it been for one of the lounge rooms I probably would not have looked at it. However having said that now I definitely will consider their larger models should I need to replace one of the "real brands" in the other rooms. I was also lucky my local DSE and my local HN let me play with the TCL and Changhong units in store and even connect up consoles etc to check other inputs.

Besides that, if you need a TV now and cant wait until they start clearing 2015 models in Dec-Mar then you will struggle to find anything over 40" from a "real brand" under $1k right now

        • @Japius: yeh that's what I mean… for $500 for a 50"… that's value for money…

    • I have a 40" changhong. bought for $314 during a DSE sale earlier in the year (has been cheaper during freakish sale). very good tv. good picture and sound. would certainly recommend changhong.

  • No HDMI-CEC is a deal breaker …

  • Would this work for a gaming pc lol

    • No, too much input lag.

This TV does not work with CHROMECAST, the location of the HDMI inputs does not have enough space for the unit. Picture quality wise for TV signal is ok for the price. Excellent with games and bluerays. And you will still get another 2 years warranty on top of the 3 year manufacturers warranty, just received a letter from Chonghong Australia the other day.

Chromecast comes with a hdmi extender included for this reason…

    • My Chromecast came with an extension cable, I don't use it on this TV but I can't see how it would not fit when using the extension cable? Unless they dont come with the cable anymore? I am fairly sure a HDMI extension cable would solve the issue though

I was worried when my friend bought this tv a few months ago but it's pretty good especially speakers are really loud. It supports usb play as well.

Why is there no love for the 55"???

    • +2

Agreed - $626 (inc 2% CR) for the 55" version seems to be a crackin price

      • +3

Bought and setup the 55",… i mean seriously $626 with 5 year onsite warranty I AM ONE HAPPY CAMPER… picture is great i actually rang the local repairer of ChangHong and said there fine for repairs and are quick to supply parts and repair if there is a problem but they said they had very few problems… time will tell

        • Good work. I actually pulled the trigger as well.

Any idea how this would compare to my 4-5 yr old entry level 50" 1080p Panasonic plasma? Not sure of model but only cost $1k back then. Mine is clearly still good to look at for SD but every new TV is see these days is a much crisper, at least on their HD feeds in showrooms.

    • No way would I be replacing a 4-5 year old Panasonic Plasma for this, don't rely on what you see in the shop as a comparison, it can be very misleading. Plasma didn't lose out to LCD because it was an inferior picture.
That being said, this is still a bargain, especially with a 5 year warranty.

      • Fair point, thanks. Back in England I had a 720p Panasonic plasma before this one as well and it did me very well.
I'm looking for a 2nd unit for another room, mainly for Netflix, thinking this deal will work for that

Bought a Chanchong about 4 years ago, picture would best be described as bright and cheerful, sound, 'adequate.'

TV is still going strong to this day.

Will happily consider another chanchong when they release a 70 inch or above model.

    Cheers

  • Got one for parents in law. Basic TV, the default picture settings have very bright greens. Bit of tweaking and looks fine. Picture processing is ok, FTA tv looks good on it. The user interface is basic, simple picture and audio customisation. The epg is basic as well, can't use up/down on the remote to go through the guide. For a $500 tv it does the job as the picture quality is very viewable.

  • Are there any issues with wall mounting this - all standard? Thanks.

Also can anyone actually confirm (from testing) a Chromecast will work in the TV - will be my whole reason for buying it…

    • +1

Cannot see a reason why not, as the others have mentioned the chromecast comes with a hdmi extension cable…

    • 2 HDMI ports, so if you are only using one HDMI port then you will not have any issues.

      • I have mine setup this arvo… using both port… as other have said, the hdmi extension that came with the chromecast will help unclogging the other port.

but didn't realise only 2 hdmi, might need to get hub now lol

        • If you have an Amp with hdmi sockets then that will solve the problem.
Good deal here - Yamaha YHT-1810B Home Theatre System 600W $319.20 after 20% Code (Plus 2% CB) @ Good Guys eBay https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/200529
          Ends today.

  • I picked up an FHD 52 Sharp TV from Grays 3 years ago for under 500 bucks, been waiting for prices to fall below that, the only one I have seen was a Soniq from JB and reports were a bit on the nose. Wondering if maybe the lower dollar is the reason or if larger TVs just aren't going to get any cheaper.

  • Anyone try HDMI-CEC in this TV? I want to use it with Raspberryㅠ Kodi but Dicksmith website said it doesn't support CEC. Not many TVs don't support this feature nowadays.

  • +2

I bought this tv some months ago but from BING LEE after Dick Smith would not deliver it whilst it was on sale — Bing Lee not only matched the price but delivered it and quickly too and there phone sales staff were great!! Anyway I love the TV - beautiful picture quality , good sound, fast response - I use Amazon Fire TV on it as well as Fetch TV and no problems at all - I really recommend it and it is such a great great price! If I could find fault with anything on it , or something that bugs me perhaps? is that there are only 2 hdmi but that is currently all I use after I replaced the apple tv with Amazon
oops edit to say I have the 55" needless to say there is nothing wrong with owning a Changhong :-)

  • Just a note to those thinking of the 55". No stock available in Victoria, so you have to add the $49.95 shipping. I think that there is stock in NSW, but I can't be sure of any other state. 50" has stock in Vic.
