Which Mobile Phone Do You Have and Why?

I was just wondering, what's an OzBargainer's current phone and what made you buy it? Price? Nice specs?

Also, what phones have you had in the past and how does your new one compare?

I've included some big brand manufacturers in the poll, comment your phone model.

*Other is mainly OnePlus One or Microsoft phone

I used to have Nokia Lumia 925 (when Nokia was still producing Lumia), now I own Galaxy S4 Active.

Nokia Lumia because I wanted something different from Android or iOS. Well, I only looked at local stock and I thought Lumia 925 would last longer than Galaxy S3 and other phones at that price range. Also, I was expecting more integrated experience with Windows (like what Apple does with iOS and Mac). I've moved onto Samsung because my brother cannot use his phone at the moment and it was sitting there doing nothing. I own a Samsung tablet, so thought, why not give the sidesync app a try.

    • s6, non-edge varient, had it since first day it came out

  • +2

HTC M7..cause it was free. Android rules Rocky.

  • got an HTC because I wanted Android. the reason I upgraded from my previous phone was for high storage capacity support.

  • +28

LG Nexus 5, because it was cheap and decent at the time. Hopefully to be replaced by a new LG Nexus 5 (fingers crossed) this year, thanks to the broken screen.

    • Not worth the upgrade to nexus 6?

I thought Google online stopped selling the 5.

      • I think he's referring to the new Nexus 5 that's rumoured to be released this year.

        • Oh that's exciting to hear thanks!

      • I'm not a huge fan of the Nexus 6; it's a bit big and expensive for my tastes, and yeah, as AznMitch said, I'm hoping for a new Nexus 5 to be released this year.

        • +1

It looked decent on the paper, I am looking forward to its release (though my main curiosity lies with the Huawei and whether they will put Kirin in it). That said, I wish Samsung does a Nexus (Nexi? Nexuses?) again, I wanna see a decent software on a Samsung product for a change (Well, they did Nexus, but it was long time ago as far as I am concerned).

        • @AznMitch:

I had a Galaxy Nexus until December last year when I picked up a XiaoMi RedMi Note 4G (in Singapore for about AUD 270) due to the desire for a change and the Nexus was starting to feel really slow. That said I would definitely like to see another Samsung Nexus. I also have a Huawei Y550 that I use to take advantage of Vodafone's uncapped weekend data.

      • Nexus 6 is nothing like what Nexus 5 offered, it's not great value, and it's not a good size.

  • +1

Htc m7 because of jbhifi sale

    • +1

Me too, but due to Dick Smith sale.

      • +2

Ah actually it was Dick Smith for me as well. Short term memory from too many bargains haha.

        • +1

I saw my friend's LG G3, and while the specs are absolutely brilliant the width of the phone just sucked due to my small hands. I'm also not impressed compared to HTC sense. If only HTC made a brilliant camera, I'd have upgraded to the M9 by now. sigh

        • @ankor: Wait for the HTC M10 :) or maybe the HTC Aero

    • which sale?

        • thanks. What's your thoughts on the phone? why did you buy it (aside from good price)?

thinking of getting it or m8. I really like music, so expandable memory and good speakers are making me lean towards it… even thought they are quite old phones now.

        • +1

@hahaboy: I'm not the tech savviest person to ask, but I like the size since I have small hands. The user experience is pretty nice with htc sense. Also beats audio is great.
A few things to consider is no physical home button, the battery (for me) drains quite quick depending on usage and the GPS seems to be a hit or miss at times… The m8 would be the better option of course, but I still like the m7. They are still good phones despite being quite old.
          Hopefully that was un/helpful :-)

        • @pea: helpful. Thank you :)

iPhone 6+, Owned the 5, 4 and 3g. Switched to a HTC Incredible s a while back. Horrid phone, The battery was dead by 9am and lagged it way through every app. Personally my iPhone 6+ jitters and stutters alot and stock apps seem to crash frequently (Seems im not having luck with apple regarding my last post). Boss bought the s6 and must say the screen and camera are beyond amazing. Still sticking with apple though!

    • +2

My 6 has worked flawlessly. You should probably get Apple to look at it, as it's still under warranty.

      • Dont get me wrong, It works real well. Just sometimes it has its moments! Still love the phone

    • +3

I traded to Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from as 4s about 2.5 years ago, I don't regret switching to android as I'm a computer nerd but the one thing that Apple wins hands down is being a music player, even though iTunes is slow as buggery on PC, the way it syncs your music and smart playlists send the iTunes genius function and updating play counts and album / song ratings…. Nothing I've tried on android comes close. But then I watch a mkv with DTS audio in a little pop up window while downloading Torrents and realise that life is a series of trade offs…

  • LG G2, only because it was going for $328 using a Kogan 20% off code when it was originally going for $400.

Originally wasn't planning to buy this phone because of the non removable battery and the lack of a SD card slot. However the battery life on this device is very impressive and the screen to bezel ratio is also one of the best, if not the best, on a 5.2" class device.

My next phone however will be one with both a user replaceable battery and SD card — it's a shame that a lot of flagship phones nowadays have abandoned the removable back cover design.

    • Grabbed G2 from OO.com.au eBay store for $294 (my gf wanted something local). Do you have recommendations on what to get for it? i.e. accessories, custom rom etc etc?

      • I actually liked the stock ROM. I don't find it cumbersome in any way (well, the stock G2 that's imported will have a lot of chinese apps on it, but they can be uninstalled easily). For the ultimate minimalist experience, I would try something like MahDi rom, however an official 5.1 update will be coming soon from LG. Might wait for that and see.

        A list of ROMS available:
        http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687613

Cases from ebay or Aliexpress, search for Nillkin sparkle cases (with the smart window on the front) if you want a cover style case.

Good Screen protectors are harder to find, but I just got generic ones with a matte finish (don't like shiny displays). For e.g try
        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tempered-Glass-Clear-Matte-Mirror…

        • Thank you so much :)

I've grabbed a tempered glasses protector (slightly more expensive, but my gf needed one fairly quickly) and a case from Amazon (I think it was what you were recommending, but I had to scavenge through Amazon for the specific colour my gf wanted).

So the stock ROM's alright? That's nice to hear (No need for me to worry about my gf having problems with custom ROM I've got for her, she can shift her anger to LG).

          @AznMitch:
The list scrimshaw provided doesn't seem to be up to date.
I'm running RR which is pretty stable coming from CM12 nightlies!
Keen to try out Cloudy G2 3.2 with UX 4.0.
Will def upgrade this year, the OPO successor and the G4 are pretty high up on my list at the moment.

    • Hm… What model would you get now, with those feature requirements?

  • +1

    Sony, cause was free

Went from iPhone 1 to 3 then to Samsung 3 to Sony z1 to z3

IPhone was nice but I don't mind the Sony. Haven't had the issues others have (shattering screen) does overheat sometimes but z3 seems better

  • -1

Cracked Screen Htc M7 (was cheap) until i get a Nano sim to put in my Galaxy S6 (Purchased for $516). Probably keep the Galaxy S6 until my TCL 3S arrives. I always seem to break phones, so the cheaper the better. S6 was an impulse buy.

    • +2

      howd you get a S6 for $516?

  • Galaxy S4. Wanted a new phone, saw a good deal here. Bought phone.

Was gonna upgrade but the s5 didnt seem much better and beside the battery life the phone is still good.

    • And which phone would this be?

        • +4

Did you order extra salt with that phone.

    • +3

It worked to get you to comment on a thread you felt was pointless =D

    • +4

I think you should switch the h in your name out with a c.

    • yes

  • Went from blackberry to iPhones - now on iPhone 6 plus and no issues. Also wth apple for their fantabulous customer service.

  • +6

    iPhone 6 plus… A few reasons.

    1. I have a Macbook Pro and iPad so everything syncs nicely.

    2. After trying android for a year I was amazed people actually think it is better than iOS (this was in 2011-2012 but it has put me off for life)

    3. Customer service. Apple's customer service is top notch. I broke my 6 plus screen, took it to a apple store waited 45 minutes, did some shopping and it was all fixed. When my HTC broke I had to send it off to HTC and deal with a P.O.S replacement phone from telstra till I got it back like 2 weeks later.

    4. iMessage. Many of my friends have iPhones, my (ex) GF did so it was convenient.

I could go on for a while.

    • +7

      Points 1 and 2:
For people who want everything to work out of the box, the iDevice ecosystem is perfect. There however exists a large demographic who would like to dictate what runs on their devices, and how they do.
      Point 3:
With the huge premium that you pay for the device, nothing less is expected. The number of people seen who carry on with cracked iPhone screens FAR outnumber the others. Have they not heard of this stellar customer service?
      Point 4:
I have no idea about how iMessage works, but I hope for the sake of convenience that your next GF definitely uses it.

But then again, it's competition that has helped both Android and iOS evolve and mature, neither would have reached their current state without the other.

And believe me, I could go on for far more longer :)

      • +2

iMessage is like Facebook messenger, WhatsApp etc. basically iPhone to iPhone messaging over the Internet.

        • +2

but iMessage can be slow sometimes… I prefer to send texts.

        • +1

@jjjjjj: I've never had issues with iMessage being slow…

        • +1

@knick007: I reckon it is because I live in a 'remote' area.

      • +1

I used to be one of those people who liked the freedom of android. but then like most of my friends with android. I never actually did anything with that freedom. now i'm on the iphone, and it just works. so I'm happy with that. too much bloatware from the manufacturers and telcos as well for andoid.

I think the price is negligible. the S6 is basically the same price.

    • I've never owned an iPhone, but Apple is still king of good UI and good design.

It's just not the worth the extra $500 to me, over a decent Android.

      • Well, speaking as someone who DOES own both, I can tell you the Lollipop UI kicks Apple butt in my opinion. Design? OK yes the design of the iPhone is a bit better I feel, but give me the Lollipop UI any day.

  • +1

    Iphone 6
Got it at the right price
It is always about the right price
    That's all

  • +6

Iphone 4. Looking to replace it with an android. Not sure which phone yet.

  • +1

Galaxy S4. Compact design, decent internals, removable battery, MicroSD card, decent 13mp shooter, plenty of high quality custom ROMs, and can be found second hand for chump change these days. A very versatile device at a good price indeed, although it is pissing me off right now due to a buggy ROM I flashed.

  • +2

Note 4: pretty much forced onto it by work even though I'm paying.

Used to have a Nexus 5 which I really liked.

    Would have preferred OPO

  • +17

Oneplus one - Price and almost stock android.

    • +2

      And specs!

  • +11

Huawei Y550 $45 & G526 $80. For features and performance they are hard to beat. :-)

    • +1

Me too… well paid $40 with $5 Hardly Normal Voucher :)

    • +1

That half price G526 deal was awesome, mine is still going strong too :)

    • Pound for pound best damn phones on the planet. Only problem is that I need a new battery for my g526. About $20 on ebay, which is half the value of the phone.

True Ozbargainers always go Huawei, or a chinaphone.

      • True Ozbargainers always go Huawei, or a chinaphone.

Well the survey so far proves you are wrong 📱

        • is everyone voting on the survey? I've had the $expensive$ phones and apart from paying more you don't get much more than you do with the Huawei.
Just today I used the sat nav on the old G526, closed the cover and threw it in the door side pocket, voice guidance could still be heard and worked perfectly. Just because they are cheap does not mean they are rubbish. I have a $800 one here that is just a fancy paper weight… :-(

        • @xywolap: > is everyone voting on the survey?

          I dont know. I didn't.

But while I dont think the survey can be completely representative, at least its probably more accurate than the one persons wishful comment that

True Ozbargainers always go Huawei, or a chinaphone.

        • @RockyRaccoon:
          OK… I'm convinced.. I'm off to buy a $1,000 phone.. :-)

        • +1

          @xywolap: I understand your thoughts.

But I wasn't criticising the choice, or the rationale for that choice. just the statement that TRUE ozbargainers are all the same. And it wasn't even anything you said.

So you can save your money like all TRUE ozbargainers do. Save even more by resetting your phone every now and again and resist the urge to update every year, and block all phone deals on Ozbargain, then you will really be TRUE no matter which brand you enjoy 👿

        • @RockyRaccoon:
Why block all the phone deals on ozb?
I did buy "another" phone yesterday!! LOL.. but just one of the big W $19 Telstra Lumia 530 special… had my moneys worth already just playing with it.

        • +1

@xywolap: >Why block all the phone deals on ozb?

so you dont get tempted to buy another and use what you already have.

BUT I see my advice is too late for you 😀

      • the tricky thing with mobiles is that it isn't just price or screen but also the bands that it supports. Not many of the Chinaphones support all our 4G bands e.g. 700mhz. NBA coverage can be a challenge when in crowded places e.g. trains or wall generation e.g. 700mhz is better.

So I look forward to Chinaphones having all our bands in Australia supported, but that's unlikely, so until then it's samsung, apple or the other big brands, and their better models e.g samsung s5 and s6 not s4, apple iPhone 6 not 5 that have 700 mhzs support.

There are other bands besides 700mhz that we use in australia but aren't covered by china phones or older 4G phones.

  • +1

Samsung Galaxy Note 4, bought it thanks to my friends at Ozbargain in December. Great specs, great size (I have big hands) and the stylus comes in handy. I wish TouchWiz would go away forever but the phone is still nice!

    • Try downloading Nova launcher. It's amazing how much difference it makes.

      • Or the original Google Now launcher. I did this and I love the fact my phone UX behaves like stock Android. "OK Google" works, and I can drag and drop stuff around without looking for a stupid edit button (what's up with that Samsung???) I can also replace my drawer apps.

I replace any phone UX I own with the Google Now launcher now. works great.

  • LG G3 855 because my i9250 was running like molasses uphill and I figured it was time to get something better. Was about to pull the trigger on a 3GB G3 for around $400 when a 2GB one popped up on gumtree for $250 so I nabbed it.

    • Do you notice any lag?

      • Minor stutter every so often, no idea if the 3GB units do it as well as I've not used nor ever seen one in the flesh. I paid less for the G3 than I did my 9250 so I'm okay with any caveats of it being a 2GB model.

  • +2

    Huawei Y550, G526 and an Alcatel Pop S3 for 700Mhz, coz I'm a tightarse

  • +7

Windows Phone. It was a good option as not a fan of apple or google. Apple was too expensive and the windows phone looked better than the google options available at the time for the price point I was after. I like having a windows phone just wish the app situation would improve.

I think Microsoft should've been added to the poll as new versions of the lumia windows phone have Microsoft branding rather than nokia branding.

  • iphone 5. Looking to upgrade to iphone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6. Any hints?

    • +2

Wait until late August for a cheap new iPhone 6, or early October for an even cheaper used one.

    • GS6 Edge?

  • +2

    Nexus 6

    Pros:
    * Stock Android Lollipop
    * Amazing screen (big and clear 1440p)
    * Awesome stereo front facing speakers
    * Quite a good camera
    * Nice in the hand (curved back and metal sides)
    * Good battery life and turbocharging
    * Moto 360
    * Fast and snappy
    * Small bezels (makes it a very similar size to iPhone 6+ at 5.5")

    Cons:
    * Quite a large device (obviously, at 6") but manageable
    * Can't think of any others besides nitpicking (or is this a pro…)

    • +2

      how about

Con: no micro sd card expansion

      • How about

        Pro: 32GB base model

        • +1

          32 gb is good?

        • @hahaboy: better than the standard 16GB!

        • @Woodyg22: that's like saying, would you rather be slapped or rather be kicked in the nuts? Both options are bad overall, but slap is obviously "better" :p

      • Agreed, just bought a 128GB microSD card for my S4. Cell reception is too flakey for me.

    • Pro:

Google made so get all updates direct and long term support.

  • +2

iPhone 4S. I love the apps and it does what I need. I will upgrade within the next year because it's starting to play up a bit, but I'll be sticking with Apple because I love the features. Had a Windows phone before that, which I just hated.

  • +8

Nokia 930, love the Windows OS soon to be updated to Windows 10. Another bonus is auto sync to OneDrive.
I got quite sick of Android crashing and being super slow and I wouldn't use Apple products if you gave them to me.

    • +6

I second this. Windows Phones have ALOT to offer. I use a Lumia 930 for my primary and my old Nokia 1020 for business (yes it is STILL the camera KING). I use windows phones because it works seamlessly with my microsoft surface pro, my server, my desktop and my xbox one. I have owned so many Nokia mobiles but not limited to… Nokia 5110, 3350, n90, n96, N97 mini, n8, Lumia 530, Lumia 800, Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 1020 and Lumia 930. I have no doubt that Microsoft will continue to provide an awesome user experience into the future (think hololens :) ) windows phones just work and they work very good. I don't miss apps except maybe snap chat…so much is already built into the os there is no need to download all apps as you do with other phones with other operating systems. And with widows10 on the horizon it will make a large dent in the market against the other manufacturers.

      • +5

I third this? :) i had cycled through iphone, htc, samsung, nexus, blackberry etc. and the longest lasting have to be the good ol' nokia and my current lumia (now microsoft). had macbook, ipod, ipad, surface pro, android etc. all collecting dust except for surface pro. sync with one drive perfectly. imagine taking a photo and use it straight on your laptop for your word/excel report (as you pick it up in your folder straight away), or for Ebay photos etc :) tried dropbox, icloud, google drive etc but still not as straight forward.

        • On my first month with my GG special Lumia735 and I'm still trying to live with it. I miss my garmin and strava app… :(
And the stock instagram plus facebook app are horrid..
          I hope windows 10 will address this…

        • +4
          :)

        • +1

I am surprised that everyone is talking so highly of OneDrive, I've never had nothing but a headache with that thing (so much that I've ended up getting dropbox on my Lumia. I think the thing that pissed me off was how the things that are "uploaded" are not set in stone, there was a guesswork on whether it's available or not (lost half of my notes on OneNote, thanks to that). That said, with Surface Pro, I found there was a lot of integration (from pointless things, at least imo, like the colour theme to something useful like WiFi password and settings on network). I might go back to it, and use it as my main phone, when Windows 10 Mobile comes out (as a finished product), the preview looks amazing.

        • @pitiek: Use "6Tag" for Instagram it's 1000x better than the official app. And yes, there is no denying tht the windows Phone Facebook app is horrendous. I have a shortcut to touch.facebook.com pinned to my start screen and use that instead.

  • November 2009 - April 2012: Nokia E63, got it on a 2 year contract from 3, after the 2 years, changed to TPG. It was good - had a physical keyboard, and I could use Whatsapp on it!
April 2012 - present: Samsung Galaxy Note, bought outright from Kogan. My first Android phone. Been using it on a $1 pay-as-you-go plan for the past 3. years. Battery life isn't good anymore, so I just ordered a new battery today. I was eagerly on the lookout for a new phone, but I think I'll use this for at least another 6 months.

  • I use an iPhone 4S which I really like.
Battery life was getting shorter and shorter so I replaced the battery myself which was super easy but didn't help.
It seems that something is running in the background all the while which I can't identify.
Will probably have to replace it if I can't get to the bottom of the problem :(
