New Kindle Paperwhite, 300PPI Display + Audio Cable - Dick Smith $163.09 Delivered

THURS45

Spend $200 or more and get $45 off with code: THURS45
Original Code Post

The regular price of the Kindle Paperwhite (3rd Gen) is $199, but it'll be reduced if you add a small item, like the audio cable (RCA to 3.5mm jack), which costs $1.14.

This brings the total price, including $7.95 delivery, to $163.09. I expect that this coupon doesn't exclude Kindles explicitly, because they're trying to clear out the old Paperwhites.

  • For reference, these are $119 (special offers) - $139 USD RRP.

The US site ones with special offers cannot be shipped here. You need to purchase it from the international Amazon site and including shipping it is $150.98 USD which currently converts to $194.97 AUD.

I own the previous version Paperwhite with special offers, I got it whilst in the US in November last year and am very happy with it as I only need it for text hence the updated screen wouldn't do a great deal for me.

  • +2

With shipping + exchange rate, it would cost more from Amazon than getting here pre-order with the code.

  • So tempted…

  • +2

Nuuuuuuu!!! and I got the old paperwhites less than a month ago!

    • You're not missing out on too much - just the screen. I read that the new one is has a more blue blacklight than the old one.

The new fonts will probably be incorporated into the old models via software update.

I got a Kindle Voyage a couple of weeks ago, so I won't be getting this one. But if this was available back then, I probably wouldn't have gotten the Voyage (although it's still a fine e-reader).

      • Oh I was more interested in the increase in resolution. Oh well, next year then.

        • It's not that much of a difference. I had both and couldn't really tell much of a difference (with reasonable size fonts). For graphics, there is a difference, but not regular reflowable text.

        • @happychappy1: I'm in the same boat as @Bunnyburger , was cursing myself when I saw the deal , but your comments make it bearable … I enjoy the kindle a lot and maybe when this breaks , I will grab the next gen or the gen after ( how long do kindles last anyway !?!?)

        • +1

          @kamban:

I think they last too long ;) - I often see people on the train with the older kindles with physical keyboards, and they're still going strong. I guess there's no real excuse to upgrade.

I'd love one of these new paperwhites - but my kindle wi-fi with physical page turn buttons is pretty damn good even if the resolution could be better.

        • +1

@kamban: They'll last quite a long time. A fault may develop, like it did with a Paperwhite I had, which got stuck on the loading screen and wouldn't respond. I had another one which had occasional backlight flicker at low brightness levels - but that didn't stop the core reading function.

      • +1

How are you liking the Voyage?

  • For audio capable , I stay with the phone or tablet. The beauty of this reader is just the screens are better for actual reading !!

It doesn't seem the designers are concentrating on the core advantage of the product. For listening a book , my phone does an outstanding job.

    • +1

My old Kindle 3 does audio wonderfully - it's reading a book to me as I post right now :D

    • +1

It doesn't seem like they are concentrating on the core advantage???? wot??? The screen is a readers core advantage

  • Really would like another ~$110 deal on the older paperwhite.. want that backlight.

It appears I missed one on Monday, damnnit.

  • +4

They are running out of "improvements" to be made. The resolution is just fine on the current Paperwhite.

    • +5

      Cup holders.

    • +1

Color e-ink. They regressed a few years ago by leaving out audio (and text-to-speech). If they put those two features back in, along with physical page turn buttons (not pressure sensitive ones), that would be almost the ideal e-reader.

Then just make an A4 sized one (bigger than the old DX) that integrates third party cloud services and PDF, and it'd be perfect for students.

  • I'm still the using the old Kindle DX. So the new Kindles have backlight? Doesn't that defeat the ergonomic advantage of eink readers i.e. avoid staring right into a light source while reading?

    • +3

I believe the main advantage is no eye strain from the constant screen refresh/flicker of an LCD display. They're also front-lit, with the light pointing at the screen rather than at your eyes.

      • +2

Flicker is a problem. I've replaced all my computer monitors with non-flickers ones. But staring into a light source is obviously not good for eyes either. I guess front-lit lighting makes it not as bad.

        • -2

Obviously? First I'd heard of it …

        • +1

@Diji1: I can attest to that. My old Dell U2711 had a backlight that flickered to reduce brightness (i.e., PWM), whereas my newer BenQ BL2710 has a backlight that doesn't flicker at all.

Much less eyestrain with the new monitor than the old one. I got headaches with the old one. Needless to say, I don't use the old one anymore.

      • There could be problems with the nano-imprinted film, where you could get 'pin pricks' of light that shine towards you (but these are very small and not that noticeable). Mostly, there's no glare from front-lit e-reader screens (unless they're too bright).

  • I have one paperwhite and fire HD 6. They are really good quality devices. Recently my daughter got the paperwhite soaked with some juice. Since then it only powered on for a few seconds. Also charging doesn't stay. I tried bake the motherboard in oven (probably not a goodo idea). After 20 minutes in close to 100 degrees. The screen showed complete black. I thought it was dead. Then tried to connect battery again and powered up it cleared thescreen and started. This time it lasted a bit longer. In desperation I suspected the power button could still be soaked. So after I powered it up I had the cable to the button disconnected. It stayed on without issues. So I left it that way. For the kindle paperwhite owners this is a good quality device. If it failed with similar problem try disconnect the power button.

Haha, rice might have been a better choice mate!

  • Is a paperwhite worth getting over a regular Kindle?

    • +1

Depends if you value less jagged edges on the fonts, or want to read in darker places without an external light source. If you want to read in the dark, the front-lit e-readers are a no-brainer.

I have both lighted and non-lighted e-readers and they both have their pro's and con's. For example, the non-lighted e-readers look slightly clearer since they don't have a layer over the e-ink display to guide the light over it, which makes them slightly more contrasty.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you want an official Amazon cover. The Paperwhite has a leather cover available for it that has a magnetic closure, which stops the cover from flapping open. The basic Kindle (the cheap one) doesn't have an official cover that will hold the flap closed, so you'd need to secure it some how, or buy a 3rd party cover that has a magnetic closure on eBay (much cheaper). The official Kindle Paperwhite covers use some kind of rubbery plastic to surround the Kindle, so it should be more drop-resistant (than the thin hard plastic used in the 3rd party cases).

For reading, they're all pretty good IMO (provided you have a light).

    • from another person who has both, YES. im waiting for someone to bring out a larger sized ereader with a built in light

    • +1

These won't be in until July 1st right?

    • +2

That's the old one. You can tell by the colour of the Kindle Logo on the front. The new Paperwhite has the same logo design (i.e. gloss black on matte black background) as the basic touchscreen Kindle. The old one is silver text on black.

      • Oh wow, right you are. I had no idea my paperwhite would be superseded so quickly!

        • The Paperwhite 2nd Gen has been out since Mid-Late 2013, so it's been almost 2 years. The Paperwhite 1st Gen came out in 2012. They started selling the 4GB version of the Paperwhite 2nd Gen for US/international markets (except for Japan, which already had the 4GB) sometime late last year when the Voyage was released.

  • At first I thought this deal was for an "audio cable" for $163 :p … silly me.

    • +4

Would have been a Monster® of a deal.

  • Code not valid anymore…

    • Still works for me. You need to have over $200 in the cart for it to work. Add the audio cable in the description, along with the Paperwhite 3 and it should be fine (on it's own, the new Paperwhite is $199).

      • Thanks. I added sth not eligible for the code alongside with the kindle..

  • Thanks OP, when is the new paper white going to ship?

    EDIT: 1 July 2015

    • After 1st of July. They should ship when they get stock from Amazon.

  • Thanks OP, just bought one - never had one before so this will be my first :)

Get Calibre installed if you haven't already done so, and start collecting ebooks. You can add all sorts of ebooks to the Calibre library and use it to convert between popular ebook formats. Kindle uses .mobi files, so you'll have to convert .epub files (they pretty much do the same thing). For PDFs, it's not as nice to convert (since PDFs are basically the same as a printed page), but the Kindle will read them (albeit you'll have to pan and zoom, or it'll be really small).

      • Thanks happychappy1 for the tip.

  • the new one will be out soon with even greater resolution and the same price

    • umm..isn't this what the deal is selling?

oops you are right, my apology too early on a friday morning :)

  • I have an older kindle with keyboard. But we recently moved and now the external light shines in my wife eyes when she's trying to sleep. I really wanted a voyage but saw this deal yesterday and pulled the trigger. On the old one I broke the charge port but got a spare mobo from eBay and it's been fine ever since.

  • Damn, I missed it

  • Just received a message that the parcel has already been dispatched.. turns out to be the cable alone lol

    • Same… however check your paypal/bank acct/cc - i can see a refund of the whole purchase amount… did they cancel the order!?

      • I didn't get a refund. maybe have a look at you DSE online order status?

  • It's back on again ! Just got one! $166.15 with the eBay 20% off code
