eBay 100 Free Listings "Joke"

HI there,

I found here http://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/promo/2616 that I can list 100 items on ebay for FREE. Great? How naive I was.

I spent two days preparing my 100 listings and when I started to upload them I got to know that I can upload max. 10 or up to $2500 (which actually limited me to 3 items from 100) Because I never sold an item on ebay I need to apply and wait to increase that limit.

So right after the offer expired I can pay full price for remaining 97 listings. Well done ebay!

Is that not a scam? I never complained but shouldn't such tricks be reported somewhere?

EDITED: T&C does not mention any such limitation. I had no idea that "by default" my account is limited to 10 items (never sold on eBay before). Should not that be mentioned in away like: "you can list 100 FREE but you need to increase your limits first"?

Cheers
Martin

  • Did you read the terms and conditions?

    • YEs, I did and T&C does not mention any such limitation. Should not they mention there something like: "you can list 100 FREE but you need to increase your limits first"?

    • T&C: .. do not meet eBay’s minimum performances standards prior to or during the Promotion Period, are not eligible for this promotion.
well. I suppose "minimum performances standards" I did not meet. Why? Well, as "a new seller" it seems I have to study eBay first to understand their 100 Free listings offer. It was not clear, gets people to engage with eBay to make them more money but to me it looks like a false advertising.

  • moral of the story?
    dont use eBay…

    • what else can we use? Have not they kind of monopolised the online sale market?

  • Using a 2 year old EXPIRED post, you should get a cake or something…

    • Fair enough, it must have been a different post as I trust I saw it on ozbargain. I changed the link in the post. Anyway, the offer was real here: http://sellercentre.ebay.com.au/promo/2616 - I am very upset thought as their offer just expired yesterday and after spending two days now I need to pay to list $300+ what supposed to be FREE. Not a bargain eBay. Very tricky in my opinion.

      • +1

Yeah there was definitely an offer, I got the email about it. How the hell did you manage to prepare 100 listings as a first time seller and plan to bulk load them? I would have thought you would prepare and upload as you go?

        Maybe I'm just a lazy seller….

  • Is that not a scam?

    Uh, no.

eBay’s User Agreement and other rules and policies continue to apply and are set out at: http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/policies/overview.html

    It's likely somewhere in there.

  • It's not much of a deal anyway, it's just the listing fee that's waived, they make their money on the final sale price.

We get 500 free listings/month which gets eaten up immediately. I still pay ~$1k in eBay fees per month, $700 in PayPal fees.

Don't fret, eBay will take your money one way or another even with their 'free' offers!

    • ebay must love you

      • Heh.. Yeah every time I get scammed by a buyer eBay rules in their favour.

Had one customer buy a computer, claim it didn't work and sent back a shoebox of random bits.. eBay ruled in their favour.

The most recent was an overseas customer who claimed they didn't receive their item a week after it was sent. I had the proof of shipment but eBay ruled in their favour anyway. It took a complaint with the Financial Industry Ombudsman for them to make a 'one time exception' and reimburse all the funds they took from my account for that transaction.

Yeah.. eBay loves me alright.. they love my money!

        • That's terrible. I am glad you shared that!

          This is so unfair.

And now they own gumtreee as well.

There must be someone who can compete! well, if you have a spare few millions of $ and want to make eBay cry, contact me..

          :-)

  • Well, if not a scam then what is that?

It is so difficult to recognise whether I qualify for a FREE offer or not, so I think it is unfair to send it and hold it open to everyone.

It is like advertising on a street a free ice-cream, and once the parents with their kids came to the seller, they get a brochure in which after an hour of reading they find that the offer is valid only if you are black, over 70 and can't walk. Kids expecting ice-cream so parents buying anyway, money spent - such a "FREE" offer.

Do you know what I mean?

  • Ebay has 40 free listings per month by default.

EDIT: and as mentioned it's only the insertion fee that is waived. You still have to pay final value fees on the sale price + postage.

  • Don't get too excited about free listing fee. The final value fee is one that will sting you the most. There was 50% off final value fee the other day, luckily I got an iPhone that I wanted to sell.
