Windows Media Centre Upgrade

Hi Guys I have an old Windows 7 media centre that needs to be upgraded.

Can any one recommend a good Windows setup. Happy to build one if required.

I'm looking for recommendations for a case (small quite), motherboard (onboard HDMI).

Thanks

Brian

    $500 - 1000

Anyone looked at the NUC's. Was looking at an intel one, jus tnot sure how they capture TV as there seems to be no antenna or option for tuner card.

Nope, NUC's don't take PCIE cards so you will need to build your own small form factor desktop if you want to use pcie based tuner cards.

Otherwise go down the USB tuner route.

Streacom cases look pretty good. Recently arrived in Australia — they are made to be fanless so that passively cool the processor using a heatsink that leads to the outside of the case.

Another option is the Silverstone Grandia GD05.

A list of HTPC builds on Whirlpool:

      • Thanks Whirlpool resources is great

      • I have the Streacom FC5 WS EVO for my 100% silent HTPC. Great case and I'd highly recommend it, but increases the cost a fair bit. I got it from Rylun as they were the cheapest by far.

  • Games at all?
    Movies or bluray rips?
How much HDD space you require?
Size an issue to fit in your tv cabinet?
    Noise an issue?

      No games.

Just small footprint, noiseless, 1GB HDD (already have NAS)

      • In that case just get a celeron NUC.
Look up the NUC deal posts here on ozbargain and see peoples opinions. Some people think they're quiet, others dont.

        • Can a NUC take a tuner card. I'm in a log reception area and need to use an external antenna. USB receiver is not going to do the job.

        • @Fairypenguin: there are USB tuners, that take the same external antenna connection that you're thinking of using with the tuner cards?

e.g. I've used this type of Tiny Twin in the past on Win7 and 8

  • Thanks Guys.

Think I will get a fc8-evo or fc8-alpha and built from there.

Anyone used these cases before or could recommend a good supplier in Australia
