Home Theater Receiver Recomendations

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at getting a receiver. What would be the best value for money receiver to buy currently? Budget about $500-$800.

Thanks

  • I'm happy with my Onkyo. I've owned 4 in total but the Onkyo so far has been the best.

    • Thanks for the reply. I was eyeing the Onkyo as well but heard many died within 1-2 years. Which model in particular would you recommend? Prefer a 7.2

      • Mate I have a TX-SR608 but that's probably ancient now. It IS 7.2

        Still works 100%.

The ONLY problem I have with it is since I plugged in a Chromecast, on THAT HDMI port only, when I play back a 5.1 Netflix movie, the sound cuts in and out like a heartbeat.

I'm guessing an incompatibility between Google's version of Dolby Digital PLUS and the Onkyo. The Onkyo DOES show DD+ so it absolutely recognizes it but like I said. Cutting in and out.

ALL OTHER TRACKS I've ever tried including all forms of DTS AC3 5.1, 7.2, all play back fine.

        • +1

Onkyo's are great. I had the TX-SR607 version that is still going 4 years on (currently in use at my Bro's place). I upgraded to a Yamaha RX-V3075 about 18 months ago as i needed more power output. I would have stuck with the Onkyo brand but went with the Yamaha as it was on special.

The main reason i like the Onlyo's is because their power output ratings appear to be the most accurate. If the device states that it can output 70w (or whatever) per channel, then it usually does. Most other manufacturers beef up the output wattage.

Onkyo's aren't flashy and have comparitevly poorer GUI. However, if you're expereicned with the options, then you will have no issues in setting them up. These receivers also weigh more than other similarly priced brands - perhaps because they use better/stronger components/heat sicks?

manutd123 - My onkyo came with a 3 years warranty. Stories about receivers dying is usually similar to people's expereices with HDD's dying. Most just have had bad luck with one particular brand and hate them forever. If there was a major issue, then you would be aware of it when reading reviews from HI-FI sites.

  • Yamaha for mine. I picked up a cheapie RX 377 for $366 minus $50 amex cashback for Harvey Norman the other week. Great little unit!! The 577 model is 7.2 i think.

    • G'day mate,

I am also interested in the same. Would you be able to email me a copy of your receipt for price match. Thanks

  • Get the Sony DN1030 (Older model), the feature set is worth it.

    • No problem with the Sonys? My brother and I have both had units where after a few years outside of warranty certain channels just stop working. With me it was centre and with him it was left front.

      Haven't gone back since :(

      • Can't say for sure, but I've been using their flagship DA5800ES for almost 3 years no problems. My friend has the DN1030 been using it over a year and it's been fine, he's really happy with the performance.

  • Have you considered 2nd hand ones from ebay or gumtree? If you're not after the latest features (atmos, hdmi 2.0, etc); then any receiver that has been released over the past 3 years should be more than sufficient.
Check to ensure that it's HDMI port is at least 1.3b. Then pick a receiver with the desired HDMI Inputs and power and channel output. Something to consider is the ohm output as well, if you have specific speakers.
What speakers will you be connecting this receiver to? What are their power ratings, etc.

  • Thanks for all you input guys!

In the end I went ahead with Yamaha HTR-5067B from Harvey Norman for $550. I know on the other forum someone got it for $479 probably because it's the last one and they're clearing it out
