Dash Cam Recommendations

hi guys,

I know this has been discussed in the past but not recently,

I have recently bought a new car and thought it would be a good idea to get a dash cam.

what would be some recommendations for a decent quality dash cam.

budget would be under $100

specs
- motion activation
- loop recording preferably to SD card
- reasonably good night time video.

some comments from people that actually own dash cams and have some personal experience or recommendations on the ones they are using.

thanks in advance.

this seems to be the dashcam equivalent of an eneloop to ozbers

    • I bought this, not shipped yet as they seem to be having stock issues so can't comment on it but seems to have good reviews. Also doesn't look to have expired yet.

    • Night footage captured by this unit is sub par. You may as well spend close to $200 and get something that captures better vision both day and night and is less obvious from outside of the car. The dash cam listed above mounts awkwardly

      • OP's budget is under $100 therefore the G1W-C is a perfect choice, the quality is excellent for the price and mounts nicely behind the rear view mirror with cable hidden in the roof lining.

I recently bought this. It hasn't arrived yet, but reviews seem to be great, and it's quite discreet (compared to, say, the G1W-C). I'm hoping it lives up to my expectations.

    • Geez seems pretty good… I like the look of it too

    • Wow, it does look pretty good and the price is very good.
Would love to hear how it goes when you get it.

    • Bit strange it doesn't have a HDMI output.

I have had four, so far, covering the last 4 years.
We have two cars, so one in each.

The $50 or so eBay specials are just acceptable during the day, and almost useless at night.
Added to that, all have eventually failed, generally after getting flakier and flakier.
They claim full HD, and that's a complete crock of BS.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a brand name job after asking around and reading a fair bit, and bought a Navman MiVue338 from Hardly Normal at $80 on a pretty good discount.
We have a couple of Navman GPS that have done a good job for a few years, so I trust the brand.

It misses a couple of setting options that I liked on the cheapies, but nothing that I could not live without.
However, the image quality is great, and streets ahead of the cheapies.
Strangely, it uses less memory per minute than the cheapies, so I am getting heaps on the 32GB TF card.

    • How is the night vision on the Navman???

      • Acceptable, but I would not want to try and read a number plate.

      • I got the navman mivuie 580 and the quality of the night vision is outstanding.

    • Is the navman has loop recording?

      • My model does. Cant say for the others

  • Just go to ebay and get a little one under $30 without SD card.
I got one more 1 year & still working good..

  • I've got this one & I'm very happy with it. Also it's half price at Supercheap at the moment http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Gator…

    • Don't you have any trouble seeing round it?!

  • transend drivepro 100/200 $129/149 from MSY include 16GB micro-sd

I haven't got a dash cam but there are really good reviews and recommendations at http://www.techmoan.com

A couple of the previous recommendations are reviewed there.

    • That is a great site, and not just for dascams. Thanks for posting

If you want a nice small unit, no screen (not needed for must people) have a look at a mobius. Techmoan (mostly a dash cam reviewer) recommended this one for a long time. I bought one about 2 years ago and it still works perfect. 1080p footage is great during the day, and it's better than most of the cheap cameras at night. Mine cost me $100 with an SD card included.

  • I just bought a Falcon Zero off Amazon. It fits over the rear view mirror and has video displays built into the replacement mirror. It's designed in the USA so the camera pods that hang down from the mirror on the right side are a bit more in your field of vision driving in Australia, but not too bad. Sounds like we should have a youtube video upload comparison.

Anyway, little over the $100 budget…around $150-ish. but it's a proper set-and-forget and it records fore AND aft (2 cameras) in the one unit as well as recording cockpit noise/conversation. Reading numberplates in low light is a problem for even the best cameras when motion is involved…let's face it, the only time you really love these things is when you have an accident and the other at-fault party starts lying their asses off…and you smugly pull out the footage.

  • I have both the G1W and the A118 and much prefer the A118 for its discreetness. I've had the G1W for a year and it's ready to be replaced as the picture has become grainy. Will definitely replace it with an A118. Picture quality on A118 is great.

  • BlackVue DR550GW-2CH is what I have, its pretty awesome as it has front and rear cameras and pretty damn good night recording.

  • I too was looking for advice on dash cams. Saw this one at Harvey for $44 (but that doesn't mean much). What do people think about this one? (http://www.harveynorman.com.au/hot-deals/laser-full-hd-car-c…). Look better spec than the supercheap one for a couple of $ more.
