Cheaper Ways to Cut and Program Toyota Corolla Ascent Remote Key

Hi Guys

Need some help with my 2007 Toyota Corolla Ascent Sedan ( ZRE152) model NSW. I just got 1 remote key which has 2 buttons on the head and it works fine and is printed with "G' on it. Toyota extra security feature I guess.

I'm looking at buying another remote key which does the exact functionality as the original key. Checked with Toyota dealer & they wanted $400+.. Checked with Locksmith and they wanted $330. Mr Minit can only help with cutting the remote for $179.. Damn too expensive :-(

eBay has this remote with Transponder chip
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111652642339?_trksid=p2055119.m14…
for $150 which I can program it to open the doors wirelessly ( not 100% sure if I can program but has few YouTube videos to help ) and another $179 to cut it so I can start my car.

Just wondering if there are any other cheaper ways to get an additional remote key.

Would this Remote key

work , if I buy this and get it cut and programmed, that way I will only spend $200

Any suggestions and help appreciated. I can't find a better deal on eBay :-(
Thanks

  • I got two key blanks from two separate eBay sellers for a 2000 Corolla. One of them was able to cut the key to code for a few extra bucks, which meant all I had to do was program it into the car using the turn the key off and on X times, open and close the driver door X times, type procedure.

The other key, I took to a local key cutter who only charged me a few bucks for cutting and I then programmed it the same way.

Much less expensive than the prices you're quoting - maybe the later models have different keys.

As for the RAV key, just ask the seller if it will work for your car.

You need to be aware that there are two types of key blanks - what I'll call clones and originals.

A clone key can only be used to create an identical copy of an existing key, which is usually fine, but you need to take it to somewhere that can clone keys and pay them $100 or so just for the programming. These are the type of keys that are often offered by Mr Minit and shopping centre kiosks and so on.

Original keys have to be programmed into the car's computer with the process that you seem to have found on Youtube.

One final point to bear in mind - you only have one key now. If you lose (or damage) that one key before you get extra keys, you will be up for thousands of dollars, not hundreds.

    • Thx pjetson.. Just wondering have you got any eBay URLs to share.. I have tried to search but most of them are $150 ish… Also pls clarify 1 more point..
Can I simply buy one remote key with transponder chip in it, get it cut by locals, and program it the way shown on Youtube and would it work, I mean start my car ? Also where do I buy these Original keys?

Yes, definitely. I've done it for a couple of cars, most recently for my daughter's 2000 Corolla.

  • Seems to be a few Australian sellers on eBay, all around $60 for the blank. None that I saw in a quick search would cut the key. A couple are in Sydney and allow pickup.

There seem to be two different types of keys, most sellers give details on how to tell which key is suitable.

  • I recently needed a remote key copy as well. I know you said you went to Mr Minit, but could you try another one of them in their chain? I got a few different quotes from different Mr Minits, and went with one who quoted $180 for a new remote control key + cutting + programming the remote + swapping key cases (I wanted my genuine Toyota case on the new key). Much cheaper than $370, which is what I was quoted at my dealership. Plus a 12 month warranty with the Mr Minit one, too. I pick it up this week! :)

    Car is a Toyota Yaris.

Hope this helps, otherwise good luck!

    • PS I went to the Mr Minit in Roselands ($180 for everything - key, remote, cutting, programming etc).

  • What is your location? I just got a key + remote + transponder done for $180 last week from a guy in Eastwood, NSW

    • @ ssx, may I know his contact number pls.. I stay here in Burwood NSW

His name is Simon and has a small shop in Eastwood.
He's super friendly and was nice enough to let me negotiate a lower price :)

        I highly recommend him.

        • Thx Mate.. Will definitely call him today..

        • @smiles:

FYI, he does genuine keys too , they're a bit more expensive…usually about $50 difference

        • @ssx: I am just curious… Why not I simply buy a remote key with transponder on it and get it cut for $10 and program it my self.. that way I can save hundreds of $$..
Aliexpress is charging around $32 for remote key with transponder
cut for $10.. Total less than $50

        • +2

          @smiles:

I have no idea how the keys work - if that works for you, then awesome!

I thought (I could be completely wrong) that the transponder has to be programmed to the car? As well as the remote?

        • @ssx: Well, did you notice when you got your car keys done by Simon ? Was he using some machinery to program the transponder? The only thing they do which we cant is cut the key as per the original key and sit in the car and program it using open\close doors and put in \take out key from ignition..This way, we teach the car to accept the new key to start and open\door remotely
If this is the case, then anyone could do it right ? What do u say?

        • @smiles:

With the transponder, he put my spare key and the new key together in a machine. I think that was the transponder part…
The remote - yes, it was the series of open door, close door etc.

Anyone can do the remote part. Dunno about transponder. My car is an old one and I didn't have the time to hunt down the right remote and instructions for my model (I could find instructions for the newer model, but not mine).

He ended up using a machine thingy to find the correct programming procedure for remote.

If you have the time and money then I'm all for learning how to do it yourself :)

        • +1

The key effectively has two completely separate parts - a transponder, which the vehicle must recognise or the car simply won't start, and a remote control, which locks and unlocks the doors.

        • @pjetson: True but I'm not sure as what kind of key should I purchase if I have to just use it like remote…Any ideas ? Should again the remote be a Transponder to work like remote ( open and close doors ) ?

        • @smiles: If you want to start the car with the key, the key must have a transponder that the car recognises. This can be done by cloning an existing key, or by programming the new key into the car (a dealer can do this, or you can do it yourself by Googling).

This is a completely separate issue to remotely locking and unlocking the doors using the buttons on the key. I know that you can program the remote into the car using a silly key/door sequence, but I am unsure whether the remote can be cloned.

Have you talked to AutoKeyMaster yet?

  • Slightly different topic but … the remote for my car is gone. Can I use a programmable remote just for unlocking the doors?

    • As far as I know, Yes, you can program a new key to use it as Remote, but again, you need Original key to achieve this..

      • I'm thinking of the programmable remote that's already on my keyring. It has 4 buttons and only one is used for the garage door. It's be handy if I could use the same device for 2 functions.

        • You could give it a shot… Try the YouTube videos and give it a shot.. the open\close doors method

    • Don't think so. A lot of remotes use code hopping which means the code is constantly changing

    • You're apparently in Sydney, why not call AutoKeyMaster?

      • Yes I called them a got a deal for $160.. I am going with that option now.. Hope it works !!

  • Check the smaller car mechanics, they should be able to do one for much lesser. I had one made for my Toyota about $150 in WA.

  • Can someone tell me if this key works for my toyota corolla ascent sedan ZRE152 model with G stamped on the head case of the remote?

  • Guys, finally I had my spare key done by Simon for $165..Obviously we was using some kind of programming device to initially program the key and later, used the open\close door method to fix…Apparently was far better than toyota dealers…..Thx all
