my favourite lens in the M43 range… pair this up along with the 20mm pancake…. the best

    • you mean the panasonic? i have that too.
      Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH
      the best means?

you sure i need to have this 45mm? other than portrait, any use? macro maybE?

      • I mostly use it for portraits, also for some longer distance landscapes and street (good corner sharpness for a portrait lens)
Not much good for macro unfortunately.

        • ah ok i pass.

        • @erwinsie: There are a number of MFT prime lenses with macro capabilities.

The next cheapest easily available prime macro MFT lens is the Olympus 60mm (around $520 retail in Australian shops), which is a great lens, and is MY most commonly used lens. However it is too long (120mm equivalent in 35mm film terms) for use in photography of groups of people.

Panasonic make a Leica 45mm macro lens, which is much more expensive. However, Panasonic has also recently released a 30mm which will be half the price of the Leica, but doesn't seem to widely available in Australia yet.

However, if you just need 'close-focus', rather than macro, there are many other cheaper options, including some wide-angle lenses and zooms.

    • Waiting for a good deal on that panny 20mm…

    • Agree, I've always loved the 20mm and got the Olympus a couple months ago ($230 second hand "as new") and I LOVE it

This is a great portrait lens. It's also a great low-light lens. I've taken some super cool concert photos with it too, and loads more.

Panasonic Lumix 42.5mm F1.7 is also on sale at the moment, it is sharper than the Olympus 45mm and has Optical Image Stabilizer, would be a better option for Panasonic cameras without Image Stabilizer

    http://www.teds.com.au/panasonic-lumix-42-5mm-f1-7-portrait-…

    • Thank you! Is it regularly on sale at this price?

Edit: I see that it's new so that's a silly question! Would love to get it, but also want to hold out for a silver. Decisions decisions …

      • +1

I also wanted a silver, but Teds only has the black one, so bought one anyway, here is a review comparing the 2 lens, and the Panasonic Lumix 42.5mm F1.7 is clearly sharper than Olympus 45mm F1.8, also this pana lens is made in Japan
        http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_G_42-5mm_f…

        • But is really let down by the harsh ringed bokeh handling of light stars. Hard decision to choose. In my case it would be going on a GX7 so the in body stabilisation would partly help.

  • would this be good for food photography?

    • +3

if the food is inside dimmed light restaurant then yes you need fast small aperture lenses.
about focal length, maybe 25-30mm is better i think.

    • +3

Other peoples food perhaps, its got quite a zoom to it! Stunning lens though

      • lol. yeah or you can stand up and move back few steps to take your own food. this why guarantee people notice your shiny camera!

  • Might be a noob question but - what's the reason for the price difference between the black and silver?

Also, am I correct in assuming that this works with the Olympus OM-D E-M5?

    • Yes works with EM5.

    • The difference in colour is just a difference in colour. Exactly the same lens.

    • Prob just stock levels. I got the silver a while ago cause i liked that look over black.

    • Also, am I correct in assuming that this works with the Olympus OM-D E-M5?

The long answer is the Olympus OM-D range belongs to what is known as the Micro-Four-Thirds (m4/3) format of Interchangeable Lens Camera system (ILC), also known as Compact Systems Camera (CSC). All the lenses in the m4/3 format will fit any camera from Olympus, Panasonic, or Leica with the m4/3 mount.

  • i wish 75mm would get a similar price drop…

  • Ugh, never deals on NX lenses. Starting to regret going Samsung with their whole 20 lens line-up..

    • they are big on mobile better stick with it not camera

    • I went with Samsung and I do not regret it at all.

NX lens are the cheapest among the APS-C lens and Samsung has the most advanced APS-C sensors in the world, the only ones backside iluminated in this size with 28 MP. (NX1 and NX500).

The A03 has good prices for NX lens for example, as do JB Hi-Fi and not on any special…

The NX 45mm f1.8 in normal price is cheaper than this so called special, despite the APS-C sensor being much bigger…

      • +1

I should have worded that better, the two sentences are independent of each other, I'm not regretting it because there's no deals, but the lack of options. The NX300M itself is great and only around 300g which is a massive advantage over other systems. If you are looking for new lenses I'd suggest discountcameras.com.au, their prices comfortably beat every other website I've checked. I've never used them but I've read good things, though I prefer to just get a price match elsewhere.

The least Samsung could do is produce a teleconverter or something. I find even with the 50-200 I need to get pretty close to things if I want to fill the frame, and I'd have to sell a kidney to afford the 300mm they are releasing.

I just want to see a special occasionally though. Take a couple hundred off the 16-50S and you may just tempt me to upgrade from the PZ.

  • Been at this price for a while, but not the best but I agree one of the best deals around. I got one for around $250 shipped and the 25mm for $375 shipped a while ago (when AUD was better), then got TRS and Olympus cashback ($50 each) so made it dirt cheap! Though my advice is still to pick one up for this current price.
It's a great portrait lens - small, fast and sharp. What is not to like
For food photography, I think the 25mm is better though

For you Sony full frame lovers, you can keep your big, super expensive lenses ;)

  • Awesome lens for the price and a must have if you like the focal length. I'm more of a wide angle kinda guy but when I have this lens on, I somehow find interesting stuff to shoot.

Hopefully you have an Olympus camera (or a Panasonic GX7 like me) because those cameras have image stabilisation built into the body and this lens doesn't have stabilisation built in. But there are ways around it (correct shutter speed/sufficient light/proper shooting technique) so it's not the end of the world.

  • Got one in the previous PlazaCameras deal, so it has been cheaper in past
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170727

  • perfect deal for those who got the Olympus OMD E-M5 from the other deal of the Olympus OMD E-M5

after looking at the deal for 15 mins, succumbed to the awesome deal and bought it hahah

  • This IS A GR8/LENS. Never Any good deals on Sony alpha lenses A77?

  • Excellent lens. Highly recommended.

  • Maybe a bit off topic but how does the EM5 compared to PL7.? Got the Pen e-PL7 for my sister thinking of one for myself.

    • +1

EM5 is more a enthusiast camera - more manual controls. But the EPL7 is great too. EM5 is a bit outdated though if you are looking at Mark I.

    • +1

Just got the Olympus e-m10 from digidirect (right next to Ted's :)) for $655 including standard ez lens. Great camera and recommended. Definitely have a look at it at least before buying the pl7.

    • +1

Actually, looks like the pl7 is $448 at Harvey Norman including lens (and some photos). Cheapest on static ice is $600+ if I'm looking at the right product. In store only and out of stock for any of my nearby stores BUT it says: "We’ll be getting more stock really soon and you can still buy on back-order."

Again, I might be missing something (and I still recommend the em10), but thought you might be interested in having a look.

      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/olympus-pen-e-pl7-interchange…

      • Thanks, that's the one I got for my sister. It's actually 2 product code so if u search them individually there are a few stores with stock. Although I had to tell the sales staff.

    • Are you referring to the original EM2 or the Mark 2?

The EM5 Mk2 supports 40mp jpg images (using sensor shift) so if you do product photography (non moving images) then it might be worth considering (it also samples RGB for each pixel rather than bayer filtering for colour so you get better colour rendition (dpreview comparing it to the D810 and the Pentax 645Z) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympus-om-d-e-m5-ii/9 (worth mentioning they used a $1200 lens).

The mk2 also has a nice feature called live composite (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-8fm_3c5q0) which I can see useful for lightning photography, light painting and star photography.

  • If you don't want to pick up in store, use FREESHIP for free shipping.

Edit: although, as mentioned, might be cheaper to buy through eBay store then

  • +1

Shit, not sure how I pressed associated. I am not.

  • Will these fit any old SLR?

    • You need a Micro Four Thirds camera/sensor. If you camera is MFT, then yes. But in your case I'm guessing no. Also note it doesn't have built in stabilization

  • Looks like its great for portraits but if one already owns the 12-40 2.8, is there that much point getting this lens?

    • +2

I have the 12-40 and the 25/45 primes. The primes come in handy for the shallow DOF at 1.8 so I use it for portraits, want more shallow DOF, and something a bit lighter/smaller. Useful when I know what I'm photographing.

      If I don't know what subject/focal length i'm going to be shooting - I'll take the 12-40 2.8.

The 12-40 is a very impressive zoom and just as sharp as the primes, so I wouldn't say the primes are necessary - it just adds a bit more flexibility - and these primes are so cheap anyway

  • Glad to see MFT becoming a very good value-oriented system, which was bound to happen because of the influx of larger sensor mirrorless cameras. Just a couple of years ago MFT was seriously prohibitively expensive compared to DSLR options. But they have a solid lens lineup and heaps of nice cameras for a great price that are all highly affordable.

    • Yep and the more you look into them, the more physics gets in the way. They are really just a glorified evolution of small sensor point and shoot cameras, with interchangeable better glass. But there is just no way of getting around the limits, compared to bigger sensor mirrorless, which still have the learner wheels on. eg the a7's-great sensor's but bodgey implementation/quirks and build. A few of years and they will probably be truly competitive in a lot of photography fields. The lack of lenses compared to the older DSLR manufacturers, doesn't help either.

  • Anyone received their lens yet?

    • Yes. Mine came yesterday.

    • Received mine today from eBay delivery. :)

  • Deal expired its $479 now :(

    • THANKS WILL MARK AS EXP
