My Platinum Amex is 0% interest, because I pay it off in 54 days….
Plus, i get points, a free flight in aus, and other things.

If you can withstand the urge to spend money there is no use for these type of cards.

    • what is your annual fee?

      • The fee is $199 a year.
        Good card though.

        • +2

$149 pa if you're a member of Law Society, CPA, and a number of other professional organisations

55 days interest free is on most credit cards including this one. But does your Platinum have $0 annual fee?

        • I didn't think they did that for this particular card, that is good to know…

        • which bank? amex won't do that at all

        • -4

          @imahapyboy:
Well they have now 3 times.
Ive had the card since 2010 and the first 2 years i paid interest like every other pleb, but at the anniversary i would pay it off.

"If you can withstand the urge to spend money there is no use for these type of cards."

      That's not true.

With cards like this, you can reap the rewards of "AMEX offers", without paying the $200 annual fee associated with your card; examples from the last financial year include "shop small" ($100 cash-back), Dan Murphy Cashback ($50), free postage from US Amazon, et al.
Current ones include $10 back from Woolies, $40 back from DJs and $50 back from Harvey Norman.

Is your flight free if you're paying an annual fee?

    • +1

      The correct term is 'complimentary'.

    • +1

Depends what else you're getting. If your point earn is good, that can justify a portion of the fee.

    • +3

I've made more than the annual fee back by claiming their statement credit offers, e.g. last year there was spend $250 at Myer and get $50 credit. Saved it to the primary and supplementary card, bought 2 X $250 gift cards and got $100 credit. Used gift cards to buy groceries and fuel. Plus got about $100 back during the Shop Small promo that they do each November.

      • Yeah but with the number of free Amex cards on offer (eg this one, Qantas Discovery, Velocity Escape), you could still get all those promotions without paying the annual fee.

        • Fair enough, but with the Platinum Edge there's a complimentary flight each year, yes there's an annual fee but that can be cancelled out by taking up the offers.

Not sure about points on the other cards but the Platinum Edge has 3 points per dollar spent at supermarkets and 2 points per dollar for fuel. This adds up quick and they can be exchanged point for point with Virgin Velocity.

In saying all that everyone should just choose the card that suits them the best.

not too bad, but there are other free cards with rewards points, all depends whether you need to borrow money or not.

  • Does this card entitle you to all the Amex Cashback deals? If so, sounds like it would be worth getting - even if only used occasionally for the cashbacks.

    • +1

Yes. What you want is an amex direct issued card. Not an amex through an AU bank etc.

Also, the offers usually don't show up when you log into amex online, so you'll need to follow direct links from ozbargain threads to activate the damn offers. At least that's my experience (I've had an amex issued card for only one month)

    • +1

It does, but so do the Qantas Discovery / Velocity Escape cards, which give you Qantas / Velocity points for no annual fee.

  • I accepted an AMEX Gold card with no annual fee once after getting letters constantly offering it.

A few years later they tell me they were retiring the Gold card and generously offered to automatically migrate me to another AMEX card, one with a rather large annual fee.

So no way am getting another AMEX, hardly any merchants like them anyway. Some even asked me at times if I had another card even though they had an AMEX welcome sign.

  • If I already have an amex issued card how likely are they to give me another one?

I just want an additional one for 2 x amex offers, thanks!

    • I've had 2 before. And it's probably easier with this card as it's no fee, no perks and lower income requirements. The eligibility requirements even mention existing cards:

To save time before you apply for The Low Rate Credit Card from American Express, it's best to make sure you can say yes to the following:
      - If self-employed, I have been trading for at least 18 months, or 12 months if I hold an existing American Express issued Card.

If you're going to get a fee-free Amex card (meaning you want the Amex promotions but realise the card will not be accepted in all stores), why not get the Qantas Discovery Amex or Velocity Escape Amex, which both have sign-up bonuses and give you Qantas / Velocity points per $1 spent.

Those cards also offer 0.99% balance transfer - the only benefit of this card is the lower interest rate - but then again, if you're paying interest on a credit card, you're not using it correctly.

    • You make a good argument there and thanks for the links. I already have two Bank issued Amex cards but was thinking of getting an Amex issued one to take advantage of those extra deals that tends to go out to the non-Bank branded ones. My wife has four so we tend to pool those deals across multiple cards.

Personally I pay off my credit cards each month so the interest rate does not actually matter to me but the $0 annual fee does.

Time to consider my Amex card needs now…

How is this a deal ? This is one of their regular card and been around for last couple of months or even more. I am looking for a Amex card for last 6 months, and often check their website for deals. This $0 card was there for the last couple of months, so seems like their any other regular card.

    • Yep. If you're after a low rate card, there are cards with lower rates, not to mention wider acceptance (Amex is for point accumulation and the odd deal, otherwise vastly inferior to Visa or MC).

I recommend ME Bank's Frank credit card for people who might be interested in this post.

  • I just signed up to this low rate card, but when I login online, it says "There are currently no new offers available for this Card." and I can't enrol into the deals on ozbargain. Is this because they were released before I was signed up, or are those offers not eligible for this card?!

    • You have to manually go to the offer pages from the ozbargain deal pages to add. No issue with your card.

      • I tried to do that, but it just kept bringing me back to the "Enrol now" screen and not appearing. I contacted Amex and here was the answer:

"I certainly understand your concern about the offers not appearing on your Card ending in ###. I see that your Card was opened very recently. I'd like to share with you that promotional offer are sent to Card members based on their tenure, spending history and other such factors.

Let me assure you that once you have been a member with us for at least 3 to 6 months and your Card stays in current status always, you will start receiving the offers.

Please rest assured that every now and then new offers are launched and so you will also definitely start receiving them soon."
