Cheap acommodation in New York (for 1 week in December)?

Hi all

I know New York is expensive, but I'm looking for reasonably priced accommodation in Manhattan for myself, husband and baby for 1 week in early December. Reasonably located (i.e somewhere in Manhattan!) 1 to 2 star hotels on the usual websites (and including some of the recent discount codes published here) seem to be priced around $250 per night - it's near on impossible to find anything cheaper than $2,000 all up for the week.

And yes, I've tried airbnb (3 attempted bookings) - but not so keen on that as have been rejected without feedback each time I've requested a booking - I can only assume it's because I'm an airbnb newbie (I've accompanied each request with an honest, courteous message, and have linked as much security as I can to my account). My airbnb experience has been a real pain, as for each 'pending' booking, a significant amount of my money has been held / taken a couple of weeks to refund each time the 'pending' booking has been rejected.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where else I could look to find suitable accommodation for this time period (would ideally prefer to pay around $1000 / $1500 per week)?

  • Do a search for new york vacation apartments, or holiday rentals etc. I've done that on 2 trips to NY and both times worked out really well. They weren't as flash as the photos but was nice to be in a proper apartment with a fridge etc rather than a hotel, and of course a lot more economical!

New York is expensive at that time of the year… I'd say $220 a night is probably what you are looking at for a good/safe location for a week.

Try the LMTC. They occasionally have good deals. Free membership here

  • It is the most expensive time to be staying in NYC. Have you tried hotwire.com though? It is my favourite site to book accommodation on when travelling in America (we have been there lots of times and saved lots by using this website)!! I look up the secret hotels on hotwire and then go to betterbidding.com to try and figure out what the hotels are.

    1) Break it down by day, rather than thinking of staying in one location all week, eg. some weekends 5 star can be $200/night

    2) Remember that unlike most cities, you can commute in from a cheaper area in like 30 min

    3) Airbnb, I believe you can contact before you propose.

As above, I contacted Airbnb to make sure the apartment was available for the period we were looking at before booking. This should help solve your problem if you're still looking at going down this path.

I just stayed at The Leo House on W 23 rd Street. Take the Airtrain from JFK to Sutphin and then change to go straight through to the 23rd St stop. Check out TripAdvisor. I have only just left there and have not done a review, but many others have. Ask for a nice room and quiet. You can't beat the price.

First thing is to Skype and ask about the baby and see if they have any rooms as they are very popular. Should be about $140 per night and no tax as it's non profit.

On Airbnb, always press the contact owner button and have a conversation before sending any money. You need a good nice description of yourself. Airnbn is virtually illegal in New York except under limited circumstances, so best not to risk loosing your $$$$ and then turning up and not having anywhere to stay.
