PC Case Gear: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Vapor-X 3GB $299 + $15 Shipping (for Metro Areas)

40

Just saw this on the front page of PCCG.
Next cheapest price for local stock at the moment is $322.90 at ARC Computers (NSW). Amazon and Ebay are nowhere near competitive for Aussies once you factor in conversion and shipping.

For what is basically a rebadged Radeon HD 7970 Ghz Edition (which in turn is a better-binned, OC'ed Tahiti XT chip from an ordinary 7970), this level of performance for this price range has seldom been seen since late 2013, when there was a massive spate of deals as every vendor was clearing out their final stocks of the 7970s as in this deal, this deal, this deal this deal and this deal.

IIRC, there has been one other instance where the 280X dropped down to $300 (plus shipping).

It's been a long time coming for 280X prices to drop down to this logical point, given the performance is virtually identical between the 7970s and 280Xs for the most part.

  • Interested in a new card since mine just died from GTA haha, has anyone dealt with warranty with this brand?

    • I had a mate who bought a 7870 a while back. Took about 2-3 months to get fixed-for a common issue apparent in a large amount of those cards…

EDIT: This is from Austin Computers-it would possibly take longer with PCCG as you have to ship to them.

      • Damn that sounds annoying, looks like I'll wait for some MSI deals to come around haha

      • lol…. AC…. enough said

  • Amar, I'm building a rig in probably about 12 weeks. Should I gamble it and hold out for a better deal, in your opinion?

If you're building in 12 weeks time, then wait and one something then.

The new ATI cards should be out by then, which will make these cheaper.

I'll just +1 to xuqi. If you can wait, June will bring the 3xx series of cards from AMD, which at the very least will drive prices further down. You can't lose! If you said you were buying a new PC in 12hrs, well, this is a pretty great deal!

      What xuqi said.

12 weeks will bring you into the middle of August; the picture will look a lot different then with R9 3xx debuting around June 18-24. Even if they're late, I doubt it will be until August before we see at least some of the R9 3xx series, if not most of them.

An R9 280X, while a great value option for $299, is not future-proof enough. It already struggles with plenty of Triple-A stuff at 1920x1080/Maxxed AA, AF & Graphics.

Significantly better price:performance. Note that the R9 280X runs from the same architecture as the 7970, which is over 3 years old…

    • MSY have it for the same price as well but it's currently out of stock.

Assuming they get more, you're probably better off picking it up locally from an MSY branch to negate shipping.

I also just spotted this ASUS R9 290 for $339 at MSY, which would be insanely good value; assuming of course, more stock is coming.

The only cheap R9 290 currently in stock at MSY is the Gigabyte R9 290 for $379.

I'm waiting for another auction shipment.

Bought one for $160, then two more for a 3-some. :)

    • Haha, what a great deal that was.

I missed out on that and actually ended up picking up a second hand 7950 for $160. :(

    • Absolutely burning that I didn't buy that when I saw it haha, thought it would be a dud!

      • Mine all arrived in as-new condition. I also bought some of the Z87 boards, and they too were as-new.

Need more acts of God, or supposedly 'Water' damaged goods auctioned. :)

        • you lucky bastard :') haha

That was 11 months ago. How long do you expect to wait?.
