Dodo Unlimited ADSL2+ for $29.90 P/M (No Bundling Required)

133

Just came across this deal while searching for a cheap unlimited ADSL2+ option. Seems to be a $10 discount from the normal $39.90 p/m unlimited option. All it says is "Limited Time Offer" with no expiry that I could see. Obviously Dodo has its problems, but $29.90 p/m seems like a pretty good deal for ADSL2+ with unlimited downloads. I've used them in the past without too many issues, but I know others have complained about poor speeds at peak times at certain exchanges, poor customer service, etc.

Note: this price applies to metro connections only

UPDATE: Found this TV Ad advertising the deal with expiry date of 30 June —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnUkGrOEVOw

    Lol

  • How much would line rental cost? Keen to switch to them!

  • +1

This is unbundled, so I just went for a $23.95 Telstra line. If you bundle, you basically lose the discount, because you always get a $10 discount when you pair it with a Dodo home line, which also costs about $30. That also gives you the freedom to sign up for a 0 month contract so you can switch away to another provider if it's too bad.

  • I'm getting about $70 per month for unlimited ADSL2 when I put my phone number in.

    • Are you in a metro area? It went through fine for me..

      • No I just realised deal is for metro only.

        • +1

My bad. I'll put that in the description.

  • We really should follow the ACCC rules here, IMHO.

ie prominently state - Minimum cost: $717.60 over 24 months and Metro only.

Cheap yes. Whats the best line rental these days?

    • I believe it's Telstra's $23.95 HomeLine Budget. I saw Optus have a $22 line but saw mixed experiences in various forums about whether you can connect to Telstra-based ADSL services on these lines.

      • +1

        Telstra's $23.95 HomeLine Budget.

Ouch! And thats the one that says " you must not
take up a broadband service with another provider where that
        provider uses line sharing technology."

A small saving, and risk of big charge increase from Telstra. And the famous Dodo service as a bonus.

        • Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think "line sharing technology" is applicable in this case as Dodo uses Telstra wholesale..

        • +2

Not any longer it doesn't, the policy was changed in late 2014. The TIO had already ruled it unenforceable anyhow.

      • +3

Telstra Homeline Light is the cheapest at $14.95, but it does have a clause preventing you using broadband services from other providers (though there's no technical prevention from doing so).
        https://www.telstra.com.au/help/download/document/personal-c…

Homeline Budget is $23.95 and the spectrum sharing restrictions don't apply to it any longer (despite some old PDFs still being linked on the net).
        https://www.telstra.com.au/home-phone/plans-rates

I'm not aware of anything cheaper as a standalone product on the PSTN network.

        • Is HomeLine Light still available? I can't see any reference to it on the website, other than the direct link you provided to the PDF.

        • +2

@awebofdeception: Last I enquired it was only available on request and not advertised (certainly not with the other plans), though there used to be a webpage for it. Good luck finding it on Telstra's site, they're masters of obfuscation.

        • @bazzaa: Probably for good reason in this case. I had no idea that plan existed. I might have to change over to it. That's a massive saving over the HomeLine Budget. Thanks for the tip.

        • @bazzaa:

          Just noticed this clause:

"You also agree to take up a BigPond ADSL or Cable Broadband service with a data allowance of 5GB or above. We can change your plan to HomeLine Budget if you don’t comply with these eligibility requirements." Ouch.

        • @awebofdeception:
Definitely give it a shot and report back on how it goes, but I doubt they'll let you switch to Light from Budget.

On a new connection you can probably get it.

        • @coxymla: just chatted with telstra support now and got them to switch my budget to light, doesn't appear in the my account yet, but hopefully should reflect soon…

        • +1

          @bargain_finder:

Did you see this in the terms and conditions —> "You also agree to take up a BigPond ADSL or Cable Broadband service with a data allowance of 5GB or above. We can change your plan to HomeLine Budget if you don’t comply with these eligibility requirements."

I don't know how strictly they enforce it..

        • +1

@awebofdeception: Yeah, i was on budget anyway so i'm not going to lose anything if they change me back. Worth a shot.

        • @bargain_finder: That's very true. You can't really lose. Did they say anything about signing up for BigPond when you spoke to them?

        • @bargain_finder: Wow. Thanks for the info. I might give that one a crack too :)

        • @awebofdeception:

I don't know how strictly they enforce it..

Based on the comments, it is definitely worth having a crack at the Homeline light.

Worst thing that can happen is that Telstra 'catches' you and puts you on Homeline budget instead for not meeting the 'eligibility requirements' for homeline light

If they don't catch you though, it's a total of $44.90 a month for unlimited data and NO CONTRACT

          Definitely worth a try!

    • I just signed up for a 12 month contract with no setup but there was an option for month-to-month with at $29 setup.

      • I hope you won't regret saving those $29…

        • +1

          He is a brave man.

  • I m with TPG and $59.99 pm unlimited. People , hows Dodo compared to TPG?

    • I've had both, but at different exchanges. I found them to be comparable but people's experiences vary. I've seen a lot of people saying they had better experiences with TPG.

      • Been with TPG and happy with it! I now know 99% of the times, the slow internet, drop-outs disconnects etc are at the user's end fault - housemates downloading whatever the f**k it is for whole night whole day, fried modem, adsl filter gone crazy and so on.

      • +1

A lot of people also said they had better experience with dodo.dodo's customer service is way better than tpg.

        • No freaking way, they don't even pretend to care.

    • Been with both, with go with TPG anyday even though I had a bad experience with them disconnecting lately (but good experience for 3-4 years prior to that).

  • I wish they offer this for loyal/longtime customers as well. If I click on "Change Plan" under my account, it only shows me the following:
    Naked ADSL2+ 5GB Metro $27.90
    Naked ADSL2+ 10GB Metro $37.80
    Naked ADSL2+ 100GB Metro $47.80
    Naked ADSL2+ 3TB Metro $57.75

    • Maybe, there is no discounts for other plans but the Metro unlimited adsl because I can change my existing plan from $40 to new plan for $30.

    • ADSL2+ Metro 1GB $29.90 $119.00 ADSL2+ 1000 MB
      ADSL2+ Metro 20GB $39.90 N/A ADSL2+ 20000 MB
      ADSL2+ Metro 100GB $49.90 N/A ADSL2+ 100000 MB
      ADSL2+ Metro UNLIMITED $69.90 N/A ADSL2+ Unlimited
      ADSL2+ Metro 3TB $69.85 N/A ADSL2+ 3000000 MB

      i only get these options

      • Try to put your home phone number into Dodo unbundled broadband to see if it's available for you to sign up. If it's not, I guess you're out of luck.

        • nah it said, 'service is already on dodo'

          so you're in doodoo

          i'm still on contract

          sucks mayne

        • @tonyjzx:

No wonder, it costs you $119 to switch to a lower plan.

  • +1

combine with Telstra line rental for less than $54 a month unlimited internet. It's a pretty sweet deal. I am currently on this plan and the only slow down I get is oversea connections at peak hours (6:00pm to midnight) though I am fairly close to the exchange (about 350M cable length or 200M line of sight).

    • May I ask what city are you in?

      the only slowdown I get

What is the average sync speed you get during the 'slowdown'? Can you still stream video with reasonable quality and reliability?

350M cable length is VERY CLOSE to the exchange so keen to know what you're getting.

      Cheers :)

      • I am in Mitcham VIC. I rarely check my Sync speed but even at peak hours I can get roughly 14mbps downstream if I run a speed test at ozspeedtest.com

Again streaming local content such as youtube, Twitch is fine but anything needs an international connection will slow down to a 2mbps

        • anything needs an international connection will slow down to a 2mbps

Ouch. could be a deal breaker for many.

Were you getting better speeds with other providers?

        • @ginmi: Hmmm….I was on Optus premium cable (100m/20m) before Dodo and it's at about 3 to 4mpbs. You still cannot stream/download much at that speed and that's y I switched to Dodo and save some money. TBH, if you want a constant fast international connection you can only go with Telstra and pay a hefty lot.

        • +1

          @maxhu:

TBH, if you want a constant fast international connection you can only go with Telstra and pay a hefty

Sorry but I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on that one my friend :)

The individual ISP has little to do with your connection speed.

Unless they have their own DSLAMS at your local exachange, they just resell either Telstra or Optus wholesale.

This means that all ISPs who resell the same provider, will have pretty much the same speed in a specific exchange.

I have never ever used Telstra's BigPond service in my entire life as their prices are a blatant ripoff. Yet, I was able to get very decent sync with many providers over the years.

Funnily enough, I usually had problems with those that actually have their own DSLAMS and not the 'pure resellers'.

        • @ginmi: haha, no problem, I have no in-depth knowledge on how ISP / Infrastructure Providers operate. From a user perspective, I feel like budget ISPs like Dodo, ClubTelco, TPG etc did not pay for a big enough international pipe hence they are being shaped or put into a lower priority at peak hours.

I have been with Telstra and iiNet before and their speed are almost constant. I am sure you know more than me and it would be great if you can shed some light here :).

        • @maxhu: Yes an ISP can have an impact on the quality and stability of the line, but your physical connection would set the limit on your synced speed. One area where Telstra do have an advantage is that they operate the lines and exchanges so they can be more helpful in solving issues. Not sure if that's worth the premium though, if that's a concern just go with a good ISP such as iiNet group.

  • Where's their call center located?

    • As far as I'm aware, it's in the Philippines. I've found the operators to be quite helpful in the past, but there are plenty of Whirlpool threads suggesting their customer service can be nightmarish.

  • Looks like a good deal but 24months is a bit long for a company with a bad rap.
    $0 for 24months
    $69 for 12months
    $99 for 0months

    Maybe stick with Belong

    • +1

It's only $29 to churn from another provider for a 0-month contract if you've got an existing ADSL connection..

      • ya and you dont then the above applies..

Ie - in my case i'm building which is due for completion in coming months… at least with Belong its 0 contract and free connection :)

        • +1

In that case, what stops you from signing up with Belong for free and then churning to Dodo for $29 ;)

        • @awebofdeception:

Nothing really… I might just do this hehehe (if its still there at 29.95) but then need to move phone to telstra or something for homeline budget

        • @ezza: Ah yes, that's true.

        • @awebofdeception:

In that case, what stops you from signing up with Belong for free and then churning to Dodo for $29

Spoken like a true 'PROFESSIONAL'! :)

Seasoned and 'hardcore' bargain hunters such as myself like to go one step further though.

For 'extra credit': use a referral and save $25 on the setup/churn fee.

If you churn, you will only be $4 out of pocket with a referral plus will help a fellow ozbargainer with free credit on their account :)

Remember people: Going 'direct' is almost always a BAD IDEA ! Seek a referral whenever possible.

    • +3

      company with a bad rap

Guess they need better singers. :)

      • why even bother commenting

  • I am with TPG on 79$ plan, but at the speed of 2 Mbps
worst Internet speed. not happy with TPG, but struck in a 24 month plan

    • You have no reason to believe changing provider will increase your speeds… It's mostly due to the (physical) connection.
The only difference I found between ISPs is that the better ones will get a technician out to test the line in cases where you should get better speeds (have you tried asking TPG to do that?). In this case TPG are usually actually quite good.

Pro tip: contact their Whirlpool representatives if you have no dice with tech support

  • Guys, please look at Dodo forum on Whirlpool. Dodo have buckled under the current congestion issues.

I'm currently churning away after more than 2 years with them as my net is almost unusable during peak hours 5pm-midnight. Of course, your experience may vary.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is a way to pull in a bunch of new customers on a 2-yr contract to offset those leaving.

    • +1

Yeah, I'd definitely be looking at a 0-month commitment because lots of people are getting appalling congestion issues. If you're on a congested exchange, it could be a long 24 months.

    • In that case, what stops you from signing up with Belong for free and then churning to Dodo for $29

May I ask where are you located?

  • Dodo is currently unusable every day at peak time. Except for Netflix which is fine.

  • Bundling required. Doesn't say anywhere on the website but customer care denying the 'no bundling'. They asked to move home phone line with them to get adsl unlimited @ $29.90

    • +1

Yeah, they don't seem to be aware of the deal. I had the same issue communicating the existence of this deal, but it's clearly "unbundled" on the web site and I was able to sign up with no issues.

      • That's good. Will try again later this afternoon.

        • +1

I had to cycle through a few people to get someone who acknowledged that the price applied to unbundled plans. The online sign-up works fine though.

        • Info for existing customers: $29.90 valid for new sign ups.

        • @charlie123: If you're an existing customer, you can simply login into Dodo and select change of plan, then choose whether you want to start using your new plan immediately or next billing cycle.

        • @F-35 Lightning II: Thanks! Nice to see new offers in Account Management for once.

        • @F-35 Lightning II:

$29.90 unlimited adsl now showing up.

        • @charlie123:

Are you able to switch to the new plan yet? Here's what looks like after you switched to a mew plan:

          http://imgur.com/r4ldMaa

        • @F-35 Lightning II:
          Nope, still the same :(

        • @charlie123:

I take it you're an existing customer of Dodo? How was your experience so far with sync speeds?

Also, do you mind providing your referral code for $25 saving on setup/churn (and some free account credit for you)?

If you don't want to post your referral code here, feel free to PM me. I tried to PM you but you disabled this functionality on your OzBargain account.

          Cheers :)

        • @ginmi:

I have enabled messages now and sent you one.

  • I got sucked in by DoDo on one of the previous deals. I signed up for a discount deal on a "no lock in contract". Two months later they up the price by $10/m. I rang and complained and they said the price had actually gone up 2 months before I joined and that the new pricing was in the fine print. On top of this, every month for the first 4 months I was billed the incorrect amount and spent countless hours on the phone to them. They kept adding stuff I didn't order e.g. handset hardware rental, silent number surcharge etc.

    • +2

Why didn't you churn away after two months? Any provider can make plan changes whether in a contract or not. They should give you 30 days notice though.

    • +1

      Contact the TIO.

      • Based on evidence from other people, including the experience of one of my team members, the mere threat of going to the TIO is often enough to get the ISP to 'bend over'.

Every TIO complaint costs them money plus it makes them look bad in the public stats the TIO publishes on regular basis.

  • I can't see any where on the plans page it says limited time $10 discount for unbundled plan. The $10 discount has always been for bundling.

    • I'm inferring the $10 discount from the fact that this plan is usually $39.90 unbundled but is now $29.90 (Limited Time Offer). You'll notice you no longer get a $10 discount for bundling this plan because it's already discounted by $10.

  • Interested in this deal, but was wondering if there's anything stopping Dodo from increasing prices after I sign up. Just worried because they do say that's it a 'limited time offer'.

    • I think it depends on whether you're gonna sign up on a contract or not. If you signed up for a 12 or 24 months, then it's most likely that you will be charged for $30 monthly for the rest of your contract's term.

      • The guy I spoke to on the phone claimed it would be an ongoing discount once you had signed up, but you always have to take that with a grain of salt..

        • Yep, I'd take it with a grain of salt if you signed up for a no term contract.

        • @F-35 Lightning II: I'd think the opposite really. Once they have you locked it, they have no incentive to keep the price low because you have to pay it for the next 12 or 24 months. When you're month to month, you can churn away at the drop of a hat, so why risk that?

        • @awebofdeception: You only have to pay for what you'd agree on when you signed up for a contract (ex: 12 or 24 months). They can raise to $50 but it would not affect you as long as you're still on contract unless you're on month to month plan.

    • There's probably something in the fine print allowing Dodo to increase the price of your plan.

    • anything stopping Dodo from increasing prices after I sign up.

No, there is nothing preventing Dodo from raising their prices in the future as they see fit.

This is how capitalism and free markets work.

The best way you can protect yourself from such potential rises is by not being loyal.

  • I am customer of dodo for more than 3.5Yrs now.. Customer service is getting worse now, before buying this give a call to hot line & see how long you need to wait to talk to someone.

  • +1

I am a customer, not recommended
very poor customer care, slow internet speed

  • I just connected with Dodo on one of their cheap regional plans and have ended churning immediately after I got fully connected. They connected me to an ADSL 1 port despite me agreeing to connect to ADSL 2 without even telling me and after fact (1 month later) there are no free ADSL 2 ports in the exchange (99% sure they were free when I signed up). They wouldn't even "open" my ADSL connection to 8 Mbps and didn't care much when I called and said "do something or I am leaving".

I have been with Dodo in the past and moved away then because they didnt do anything about slow speeds. Later TPG got a Telstra technician out to spend almost a whole day trying to fix it.

Moral: Dodo works only if it works from the get go and you don't need to contact them. I wouldn't be connecting on anything but the 0 month plan.

  • Anyone has referral codes to give out?

If you don't want to post them here, please PM me instead.

It will allow you to save $25 on the setup/churn fees. This means that if you 'churn' an existing connection (which you got setup for free from Belong for example), the cost will only be $4.

The referrer will also get $25 credit to their Dodo account.

    http://www.dodo.com/footernav/useful-links/refer-a-friend/

  • If your wise, you won't use any of DODO's services ever.. You will get less than what you pay for.

  • I'd also like a referral code if anyone has one to give?
