Would this be much of an upgrade from a Pentax K-r?
Not really. More of a side grade if you want to change systems. The K-r might even be better than this, as this is a baseline Canon model.

1200d does 1080p video, 18mp stills, bigger range of lenses,
K-r has higher res screen, built-in image stabilisation, faster continuous shooting, faster max shutter speed,
the 1200d would take sharper pictures, but not sure if it's a big step up
Its a good entry level dslr. But the lens are all version III without IS, you gonna need really steady hands or take pictures on tripods all the time.
