  • Its 6 bucks more for the imported Becks (at least at my local DMs)

  • +1

it says 39.99 but scans at 34$ and it's the imported version 2 months till out of date.

  • Hell yeah - tasty beerz :)

  • What is an International Bitterness Unit?

    • I'd never heard of it, but it was in the online product description, so I quoted it.

Here's the wiki definition of IBU:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_measurement#Bitterness

      • Interesting. Thanks for your effort, but its weird ive never heard of it either before. You would think somebody like Hofbrauhaus would proudly declare these measurements or something.

        • Quite a few craft breweries put the IBU's on there labels.

          Rogue for example:

          http://beerpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/beardbeer-pr…

Not that long ago there seemed to be a bit of an arms war over how high the IBU's of a beer could be. I didn't really understand why because after a certain level of bitterness it all tastes the same to me.

A bitterness scale for beer? Where does it start… 100 as the lowest?

    • +11

International bitterness Unit: Hmmm, sounds like my ex from Puerto Rico….

  • +17

Brewery: Under license in Australia = Bin juice.

    • +2

Yep. Pretty much nailed it. There is a huge difference in the quality between "we'll make it for you…for the lowest price" and "we're making it because it's our own product and we believe in it".

Actually, having worked as a peon at a large chain liquor store, I was told that the imported stuff (parallel import) was actually cheaper for the company to buy, but they couldn't always get it.

And it seemed to make sense, because it usually went on special when we had the imported stuff coming in.

But agreed. Imported stuff so much better. I did a side by side on Stella Artois, when we were changing over from one to the other. They were miles apart.

        • Agreed, and ironically (in line with your experience) the imported Stella is usually cheaper than the locally made garbage.

    • +1

You are right, but this Becks is brewed in Germany.

      • Sorry, up the top there: "Brewery: Under license in Australia". Is this part correct?

        • +1

DM sell both imported Beck's and the locally brewed variety. Hence in the product info they include the following to cover both scenarios:

          Country: Germany and/or Australia
          Brewery: Under license in Australia

I'm guessing that some stores will have imported stock while others have Australian stock. So far, 3 posters have already reported buying/seeing the imported boxes in their local stores.

        • @1bug: Thanks for the clarification, sounds fair enough. The German one is so much better…let's hope I can find a carton of that :)

      Licensed produced locally etc.

Not necessarily, according to discussions with Chuck Hahn at one of his beer tasting sessions a few years back.

It will depend on how the imported beer was treated on its shipment to Australia. If it was in a container higher up on the deck, and hence more exposed to heat, this will affect it's flavour. So imported can mean good, or not so good taste.

I've noticed this from drinking quite a lot of imported beers - you get one box and it tastes amazing, the next box tastes coppery. I have found this with Becks specifically among others.

Imported Becks is still miles ahead of the local brewed under licence stuff.

      • +1

Yes, I noticed Aldi was different tasting than DM for same imported stock, but it could have gone the other way. I have also heard the same thing in terms of heat.

  • +3

It's $34 because the boxes (imported) are all best before may 2015, at my local dm anyway.

    • ebenfalls

  • I remember my 10 years in Dubai where Fosters's beer was better known as camels piss. that's the difference between the local and imported version of Becks. Imported anytime!

    • If you're in a desert, camel's piss isn't always a bad option :)

Cheers, might buy some if my local has imported stock. I've given up on anything "Brewed under license in Australia" because it certainly makes a difference. If I want Aussie brewed beer I'll drink an Aussie brand! :)

    • Yep to that.
There are heaps of great Aussie beers to buy.

Thanks OP got two cases of imported(German) from kwinana WA Heaaaaps left (prob 20+).

Can also confirm mine don't expire until end of august

I got a carton was imported, also picked up a bottle of Macallan Sienna dropped from $161 to $97 a few left at Dans Beenleigh

  • Imported Becks at BWS is also approaching used by date. Got dockets deals for Becks at BWS for $35 from Woolworths. Guy at BWS told me he sold one slab of Becks for $20 as passed used by date.

    • Use by or best before?

      • Generally beers have a best before date. You would be fine drinking it months past the date on the box. It might not taste 100% but it won't kill you.

  • This will make a change from Überbrau

  • Is there an easy way to identify the imported beer by asking on the phone? Not sure I can face trekking to DM to find they only have local.

    • Look for the word "Imported"

      • Also there is normally a sticker on the box saying who imported it .

      • And the best way I've found is to look for any reference to Australia on the actual bottle. If there isn't one, there's likely been no strategy regarding Australia, in which case it's the local German product = true import.

Thanks OP, Just picked up 2 cases which I orderd last night, They are imported and expiry of July.

  • Picked up two cases last night, from Oakleigh, VIC. May expiry, but imported. Still had probabky a couple of dozen on the floor.

I always float between the mainstream euro beers, depending what is imported or on special at the time, I havent had Becks in a while, but I noticed (I think) these are a bit low on fiz… anyone else noticed this?

    • +1

Yeah a little bit flatter. BWS/DM would have shipped them in from Hamburg (closet port to Bremen) and it would take at least 60-70 by boat to get to Melbourne, most likely Australian port destination. So it wont as fresh as locally brewed beer. I just wish they had Beck's Gold. Sometimes I miss fresh Beer in Bremen and German.

      • true, Beck's Gold was much better than the silver one, don't know why they don't send that over too.
