LED Torch -Wild Country 6V 1w - Now $2 (Normally $19.99) Includes Batteries - Rays Outdoors

1310

Picked up 4 of these LED large torches today and they are great for $2 each.

Includes 4 x Eveready Black Super Heavy Duty "D" size batteries. I checked online and a 4 pack of those batteries are $8 at Woolworths.

I purchased it from Rays Outdoors in East Brighton but I believe it is available at all Rays stores at the moment. It is labelled as a clearance item from $19.99.

  • Good discount but kind of enormous for a torch.
    Any more left a Brighton?

  • Bought a few. Plenty online for click and collect in WA. Great deal, thanks OP.

Led running of a 6v batt should last a heck of a long time.

Even using AA Eneloop batteries in adapter shells, it should give good life. One AA Eneloop has about 2.5 Watt-hours of energy, so four will give you 10 Watt-hours. Assuming typical step-down switch mode efficiency of 75% to 80%, that gives 7.5 to 8 hours run time, supplying one Watt to the LED.

However, there is still a chance that the regulator in this torch isn't a switch mode converter. It might be just a one-watt resistor.

Egon? Is that you? Psychokinetic biological inhabitation?

    • Yep I saw those in stock at Brighton East. Wasn't LED so gave it a miss but still good deals.

  • Thanks heaps!

  • how bright are they

    • It doesn't say lumens on the box - but it is nice and bright. A white light - not yellow.

    • +5

      They should Brighton things considerably.

      • :)

  • What's the quality of these. If I went hiking in a pitch black forest with them how far would I be able to see?

    • +7

Wow a bit fussy mate. It is $2. Just the 4 x Eveready "D" cell batteries are $8 at Woolworths and are included with this torch.

    • With 1 watt not very far, the cheapest AA aluminium chinese torch I have is a shade under 2 watts :) and cost about $3 shipped.

    • +3

Don't think these would be the best choice to take hiking

      • Or to a pitch black forest ;).

  • Thanks OP, bought 4 pickup from the melbourne store. Hopefully they still have some in stock.

  • Does it float?

    • +3

That was discussed a few months ago, for a similar torch. For that torch, the answer depended on the battery weight. From the estimated volume of this torch, which looks about the same as a one-litre bottle, it should have a buoyancy of roughly one kilogram. If the weight of torch+batteries exceeds the buoyancy, it will sink.

So with D-sized NiMh batteries, it will probably sink.Four D-sized Energizer alkaline batteries come to about 600 grams, so with those, it will probably float, if my volume estimation is correct.

If you need it to float, and D-size alkaline batteries are too heavy, you could use AA batteries and battery adaptors - but you could end up spending more buying the adaptors than you paid for the torch!

      • lol awesome reply!

it doesn't seem to be water proof though like the dolphins right?

        • Hard to tell. Nothing in the description says waterproof, but zooming in on the photo, the power button could be a rubber dome, or it could be hard plastic.

If it doesn't have proper water sealing, then how long it floats will depend on how fast the water gets inside the torch. Maybe a few seconds, maybe a couple of minutes.

Order some from the ballarat store for pickup thanks rpo.

Ordered ten of them. Will gift them to some charity if I find some that wants them. Only need the batteries

  • Sweet, thanks for that! Bought two! Might come in handy in case there's a blackout or decide to go camping

        • @CVonV:

          Oh it's been brung!

  • Can anyone comment on the brightness?

    • +2

No good for pitch black forest apparently (see above), but for most household uses I reckon you'll be fine.

      For $2, I doubt you'd find better.

    • Possibly around 80 lumens - compared to 40lm for the old incandescent Dolphin.
Or 10lm for an incandescent 2AA torch.

Twice the lumens only appearing around 40% brighter. (80/40)^0.5

Might seem around 3 times brighter than the old 2AA torch (8^0.5) - but would have a better beam, although likely broader.
Certainly unlikely to be a 'thrower' - like a laser ;-)

  • About 5 left at Ray's Adelaide (West Terrace) store

Collected mine today, for 2 bucks you cannot go wrong. used it in a pitch black environment in the backyard and could see 30 steps ahead of me so all detractors this is as good as you can get for 2 bucks and still juice left for more use after keeping the torch on for over 2 hours.
