National Bank Credit Card Will Be Closed by Bank Due to No Activity

Hi guys,

NAB send me a letter saying they are closing my credit card because i have not used it. Ok thats true i have not used it. I had this credit card for more than 10 year.
I have paid this off now, i keep this for an emergency for my family. The bank is asking me to use the card before certain date otherwise it will be closed.

I rang them and ask to keep it active , they said they cannot do this but i will have to go out and purchase something to keep it for another 6 months - 12 months or use teller machine. I find this very wrong when i,m paying the annual fee and bank can close it because i don't make a purchase. I should be able to ring NAB and get them to keep this active , or login online and make it active. There is no other option to do this but to go out spend the card to keep active.

  1. Is it only me who keeps a card for rainy days ?
  2. Has anyone else got this kind of letter before from another bank ?
  3. If cards get canceled , they advised i have to ( past due date now , cause was overseas ) re-apply with credit check for a new card ??
  4. Don't you find it wrong , for NAB to force people to buy?

NAB told me today , reason for this to make sure people have not lost the card , so security purpose. That was why i was ringing them to tell them i alive please keep this card active but no I have to go out and use it!!

Trying to be a good citizen, use cash as much but the bank is not letting me do that !!
Sorry small issue , i should go out and use the card - but i just want to know what you guys think.

regards

Dobo

Just pay for petrol or something with the card, then put the cash back into the account. Easy.

    • Thanks i will do that.

  • Just link the card to your paypal account… or write the number down and use it when ordering something online.

    1. Not just you, however it seems odd to me to pay an annual fee on an unused card
    • True but its a great help when i need money for an emergency rather than having insurance use the card and pay it off ( so i don't have to ask friends for money )

There's plenty of credit cards with no annual fee - if nab don't want to take your money, I'd walk away!

Why stay with a bank that charges you a yearly fee for a card you don't use? And if you're not happy with them, why stay when there's heaps of better options anyway?

    • Yep… Why would you pay an annual fee for a card you don't use?

Plenty of free annual fee cards, usually offset with a higher ongoing interest rate (ie not low rate cards), but if your not using it the interest rate should be of little to no concern.

      • True but I have used sometimes only the last year I have not used and I have a good credit limit . If I apply for a new card credit checks will be done again and will have to start with a low limit .

So u have been paying annual fees on a credit card which u haven't used for 10 years. If I was nab I would think it's weird ….

    • It is odd, but If I was NAB, as long as the annual bill was being paid, i'd be fine.

      • Exactly ,if I pay annual fee why do they care .

        • well, they have the right to care… so my advice would be to move elsewhere.

        • @Davo1111: ok if they care why can't i just ring up and activate the card or go online and activate the card. Nope I have to go out & use the card for the it be active.

  • So u have been paying annual fees on a credit card which u haven't used for 10 years. If I was OzBargain I would revoke your OzBargain license ….

    1. Is it only me who keeps a card for rainy days ?
      No.
    2. Has anyone else got this kind of letter before from another bank ?
      I haven't.
    3. If cards get canceled , they advised i have to ( past due date now , cause was overseas ) re-apply with credit check for a new card ??
Is it more difficult to swipe the card once for petrol or bread than reapply a new card?
    4. Don't you find it wrong , for NAB to force people to buy?
The card remains the bank's property and they have every right to do so, as long as it is in the T&Cs and they are compliant with regulation.

Why would you rather making a lengthy phone call than use the card? Why do you think using cash makes you a good citizen? After all it costs the government more to print the bill than create 001010100010. Why do you want to pay the annual fee for a dormant card? There are heaps of 0 annual fee cards.

    • Thanks for the detailed reply . I just keep it cause it got good credit limit . If I apply for a new card with 0 annual fee I will have to start with a credit limit of $2000.

  • Update : even after the letter due date past more than a week , I was able to use the card .
Looks like NAb didn't close my card.all good.

  • It would have saved you time if you had just went to a Coles/Woolworths and bought something really cheap! Sigh..

  • I have a completely opposite situation from you: I want to cancel my card in the next renewal date. Email them and was told they cant do it online. I'd need to ring or visit them. What a pain! I did use it from time to time, and it's costing me $30 a year….

  • Any way I'm thinking of apply for a Amex and get rid of NAB credit card .
